After this ere engine is in and working I'll be looking into building a 4 speed manual box for it, with HD sideplates. Was also considering welding the diff.... does anyone here run one on the street, or will I die very quickly for trying...?

ran one for over a year, no problems at all, never experienced any of the super understeer on fast wet sweepers either, drive a bit more cautiously in the wet though and you'll be fine,
downsides are reduced turning circle and the ability to make people think you are a tw@t when manouvering in carparks due to tyres chirping and skipping.
i know plenty of people who run them, i find them safer than stock lsd's and open diffs as at least welded diffs are predictable in that you know the wheels will always spin together.

Yeah it's something that has always scared me about a locker (and caught me out when I drove one ). Mine is twitchy enough in the wet on greasy roundabouts, the last thing I'd need is the diff to suddenly decide it wants to lock up halfway round.

I ran a welded diff on the street and the downsides are more to do with wear and tear on the driveshafts than with the actaul driving experience. You can set the car up to behave fine with a welded diff. In mine, you wouldn't even know it had one when on A-roads and the like, only at mini roundabouts and parking. They can be a little bit of a handful in the wet so you just drive accordingly.
When I went from a welded diff to a 2-way plate LSD I would say that the major benefit was just that it was a little more civilised around town. It had it's benefits in drifting and I'm sure it would also have some on the track but not enough to justiy the cost unless you are seriously racing.
The only thing I would say is that the law may not like it if you were to have an accident. While there's unlikely to be a law against having a welded diff, I'm sure they'd still find a way to crucify you for it if they wanted to.
