I've done USC before in the past, when I was crewing for some drag race VW's which were doing demo runs.
It does have a chilled atmosphere, and I was particularly surprised by it as its a predominantly modified shopping car show, but there were other cars there of interest and a few 'Rods and full on drag cars which were using the track time for shakedowns. This is a great show for showing up the Barry boys, especially if your car can do quicker than a 14sec pass. The majority of the cars were running 16/17/18's with a few dipping into the 13/14's but 11/12sec or below territory was sparse. I was with Richie Webb and his turbo wheelstanding street legal cabrio and he was running 10's.
Richie's cabrio was one of the stars of the show and every time he came on the strip, the spectators flooded to the banks to watch and cheered the spectacular wheelstands. There were crowds around his car whenever it was parked up and everyone seemed genuinely interested in how it was set up.
I found the people there to be a lot friendlier than I imagined, despite their rather misguided taste in cars, and they look after their own... one trader has something stolen from his stall and the thief was chased by security. The guy ran across the strip and up the bank and was then caught by the people watching the racing on the bank and was 'sorted out' before security got to him.
Funniest thing is the sight of the girls in stilettos and tight dresses and tons of make up struggling to negotiate the ruts in the campsite!
