OK, I need to remove 30 years of accumulated glue from the mirror mounting area of the Caddy. Seems as well as the factory adhesive is some form of alraldide and such shizzle. I am going to restick the mirror on (it fell off) but need a clean surface or it'll be off again in no time.
Obviously I don't want to damage the glass.
Thoughts, gentlemen?

A band new stanley knife blade will get most off. gently grind the points off to prevent risk of them digging into the glass, then go at it with petrol/meths/glass polish to get any remaining residue off.

It seems to depend on the glue in question but I've had great success with nail polish remover.

go to a art or model shop and get a single sided razor blade, lubricate with either with WD40 or T-Cut, should come off a treat,

If you can hold thinners against the glue for a few hours you'll have a lot better success - On an old van the screen was covered in glue over glue where someone had done the same with the rear view mirror.
I soaked some old rag in thinners and wedged it against the glue for an hour or so, then re-soaked it and did the same. It turned some mega uber solid glue that I couldn't have chiseled off into a gooey flakey mess, which scraped off with a blade in minutes
