Hi mudbarf They are 10J rims, I got them as i'd love to put some 35 12.50 15s on, and spoait, it's just I had the 31's laying around from my old Hilux before I went to 33s so I stuck them on just for fun I've read about the vit diffs, I might give it a try if I do fit the 35's, I think a 1600 would be needed first though as my 1300 is very tired! The MOT ran out the other day, so I've got one of the rear brakes to rebuild as a spring clip fell off and mullered the shoes and cylinder, and I need to look at the steering box as it's mega sloppy at present

Just discovered this thread; seems like such a no-brainer to put a Sammy chassis under a Jago Geep body, it finally gets the running gear the looks promise. Great work fella.

According to a tyre size calc I just found on the intertubes, 35" tyres have 29% greater rolling circumfrance than stock tyres. Having said that, I know that most 31's I've ever measured are closer to 29" tall, most 33's closer to 31" tall and so on - so perhaps a measuring tape on the 35's would be a good idea before you decide. If they *are* about 33" tall in the real world, then you're looking at a 21% difference in rolling circumfrance, so the V6 vitara diffs would bring the overall ratio between revs/mph in any given gear back to (more or less) "stock".
Having said that, the "stock" tyres are, according to this thing, 27" tall (205/70R15) and to say that my 31" tyres (measured at 29" tall) are only 2" bigger seems very suspect to me.
I think a measurefest is in order to make sure!

1986 SJ413 with modded arches, homebrew SPOA, home-made side-draught SU carb kit/snorkel, all perched on 31x10.5 BF Goodrich mud terrains.
To do: Fit the 410 transfer box, finish trussing and SPOA'ing the new sammy axles and throw those bad boys under the truck.
Wishlist: 6 point roll cage, lunchbox lockers front & rear, G16 engine with bike carbs, Jago Geep body.

I'm not sure I'm making my point about the tyre size very well, so here's a pic to illustrate: Note the tyre sizes - the 3 tyres in the centre are all supposed to be 255/85/16's. The same size. Except they're blatently not, are they?

I think the difference in tyre sizes of the same tyre there is due to the larger ones being remoulds, so they are re treaded on top of a standard 255 85 16 carcass, which is the size of the cooper one I know tyres can vary wildly in size, the 31's i fitted (General Grabbers) and only a smidge taller height wise than my 235 75 15 Marix Pumas. It feels much more stable on the 235s and 7J rims!

I think the difference in tyre sizes of the same tyre there is due to the larger ones being remoulds, so they are re treaded on top of a standard 255 85 16 carcass, which is the size of the cooper one Aaaaah, see, now, that makes a heck of a lot of sense. But since I want to put InsaTurbo Special Tracks on my JimnyGeep, I'm now worried they'll be as big as a set of 33x10.5's because InsaTurbo are remoulds. Which might mean I need a small lift to stop the tyres rubbing on the arches under articulation. I was hoping to get away without a lift, since the JimnyGeep with standard suspension should sit about the same height as your SamuraiGeep does now... It feels much more stable on the 235s and 7J rims! Any time you raise the vehicle, you're going to make it more "tippy". But my SJ is SPOA on a set of 31x10.5/15 BFG MT's, and whilst it *feels* much more unstable than it was before being SPOA'd, it's genuinely still rather amazingly stable. And my vehicle has a lot more weight up top than yours - I have a steel body waving about being all heavy, you don't! I think the *feeling* of instability is down to the fact that you're sat so flipping high - so when you drive at an angle, the feeling of hanging "on the edge" is kinda multiplied. Try to get some deep dish steel rims. More axle weight and extra track width helps offset ride height - although I think it's actually the track width that does most of the work...

[quote author=v8mike board=readersrides thread=104413 I don't think the new rims will help off road, they're ok for a bit of fun though I'd quite like to spring over axle it and fit some 35s, but then I think the wheezy 1300 may struggle!![/quote] Best start stocking up on wheel bearings :-) SPOA with those wheel would be fine for 33 x 12.50 on 413 axles possibly 35" on Samuari axles. The 1.3 will turn 33's quite happily, especially if you have a SU conversion, this was the wifes. As a idea of scale.

Best start stocking up on wheel bearings :-) Is it front, rear, or both that has the problem with big tyres? I ask because I know the rear is not a full-floater, and I was wondering if it was the flexing of the halfshaft that was eating the bearings at the back end... SPOA with those wheel would be fine for 33 x 12.50 on 413 axles possibly 35" on Samuari axles. Plastic body = less weight = less stress on wheel bearings? The 1.3 will turn 33's quite happily, especially if you have a SU conversion, this was the wifes. As a idea of scale. I like that! Lots! I would go for 33's myself if money wasn't so tight. If/when I build one of these, I want mine in red or black, I think. So I decided to see what a suzuki geep on 31's looked like in red:

OMG thread revival! ;D I have missed my little Mule this year, it has been sat at my mates out of test, as other stuff and lack of time got in the way! Anyway, I took a trip down the other month to see what the old girl would need for the MOT.. not a massive amount thankfully, however, there was one major hurdle - the engine! When I bought it, it knocked and smoked, like a trooper! It did the rest of the year proud, however the blue smokescreen it produces wouldnt be out of place at a Sisters of Mercy gig I was hopeful that it would be the valve stem seals, however a compression test revealed no.1 cylinder barely pulling 100psi - no wonder it was a bit flat! I kept an eye out, but no engines seemed to be available - until I spotted this: cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=251140994701&ssPageName=ADME:X:RTQ:GB:1123 today, and hit the BIN Just got to arrange collection and then I can get the old girl back in the game Also, it's back on the 7x15s, as it did not like the 10s at all!! I might invest in some more off road treaded tyres, and remove a leaf from the springs to try and soften the ride a bit

Nice! SJ engine swaps aren't difficult, they're a very simple, very light engine.
Get that badboy back on the road (and, more importantly, offroad)!
