Several people have told me when I buy my new car to fit it with a tracker as it brings your insurance down significantly. WRONG!! I don't have much to do today, so i thought i would get a quote on the car I'm thinking of buying. Without a tracker its £1000 fully comp, WITH a tracker its £1200! Now as you may think, thats a bit odd so i have got quotes on other cars and guess what! £200 MORE with a tracker fitted!! How does this work? ? Insurance companies are thick! end of rant sticking with touring car week

Is a tracker a performance mod? No. Do you have to tell the insurers that you have had one fitted? Not sure. If not you could fit one to get the extra piece of mind that you get with a tracker, if you just want to get your premium down have you looked at things like pass-plus? (or whatver it's called these days). m0rris p.s. love the jag!

i guess it depends on if you think the extra money is worth the chance of getting your car back.

Insurers probably think:
- Its got a tracker, so its worth something to the owner - Its worth something to the owner, so it'll be worth something to a theif - Its worth something to a theif, so its more likely to get pinched.

What insurance companies are you trying? And are you actually talking to human beings on the phone, or just filling in a form on confusethemeerkat.com?

Trackers are not seen as an anti-theft device, they're seen as a means to recover the vehicle once it's been stolen. Big discussion on a Land Rover forum I frequent, nobody on there has managed to get a discount from fitting a tracker.

I'm a convert to the 'old fashioned' way of actually going to the insurers rather than a comparison site now. Declaring the mods on my car on uswitch, which was my favourite before, I couldn't get a quote. Through Lancasters directly, it dropped to £120 cheaper than a standard car... Anyway, talk to a human being. (if you can find one in a call centre ;D )

It's strange that an insurer wouldn't give a discount - OK, a tracker helps recovery rather than stops theft, but if the vehicle is recovered the insurer doesn't need to pay out, reducing potential claim costs / risks.

I can imagine them not being interested in giving you a discount for it, but it seems odd for them to put the price up. It certainly doesn't make the car any more desirable to a thief or likely to be crashed. Probably just thought it'd be a nice excuse to crowbar some additional costs on, bit like the ones who manage to persuade people that they should be paying more to have snow tyres or whatever.
I had a Tracker in my car once, but I ate it on the way to Heckmondwike.

With GPS jammers available for a few quid I'm not sure a tracker is worth the money now unless they can defeat the GPS jammers.

Well it's obvious, it's for the extra cost of the tracker being nicked too!

No "MWF" I got several quotes on all different makes and models of cars with and without trackers, please read fully what I write before replying thanks.
But yes, they do give the extra piece of mind that it can get recovered, but it seems stupid that they put the premiums up because there is one fitted. Maybe Garry has it, if the car is worth tracking then its worth being nicked.. this one certainly is anyway.
I cant do my pass plus because I have been driving for 4 years now, plus I don't think it would affect the quote on an XJR.

Maybe it's because of the extra admin they have to go through with the police should the car get stolen ? And also registering it with the plod in the first place.
Sounds stupid I know but they use anything they can to load the premiums.

Getting nicked cars back isn't really worth that much to insurers.
They usually have a contract with their salvage agents, meaning that the salvager will pay a fixed percentage of what the insurer paid out on the car for it. Stolen/recovered cars will probably get lumped into the Cat D band, regardless of the actual amount of damage. The insurer will then also have to pay the (extortionate) amount the police will want for recovering and storing the car while they trace the owner.
Doesn't explain why the premium would go up though. I can only assume that as it is effectively a 'declared modification' they will have to pay out more when your car goes missing.

coverbox used to be mega cheap, not sure if it still is though. At 19 with a fresh license I was looking at 1000 a year to insure a 2CV.
