popped into scrappy last week asking for 'owt volkswagen', got directed to a '71 bug just in, had a sniff around, offered £100 for the complete thing if they delivered and it came with the V5, offer accepted !
dropped off last friday, i eventually got a battery on it and the tyres pumped up last night, 5 minutes later i'm pootling up and down the street in the bloody thing, top banana !
looks like another one to do up once the orange one is put back together, must be a sucker for punishment.

I got a 1971 Vauxhall Victor 1600 which had been off the road 15 or 16 years. I was going to use it as a shell donor but thought "I wonder"... dropped a battery in it, some fresh fuel and a new rotor arm(the original was cracked badly) and theydarn thing fired up and ran. Had no brakes mind, but she ran sweet. So I replaced the wheel cylinders, flushed the system and the brakes were fine for the next 7 or 8 years until I sold it. Only other issues were the head gasket was gone but I didn;t find out until my first long trip in her.

bloody hell! can't beat a bit of a bargain! there was one at the salvage place over the road from me, i saw it getting picked up from Malcs with a bit of engine bay fire damage. Unfortunately either someone at the yard knows their beans, or the insurance company had told them what was in it cos they had it up for £450, undrivable! It had a brand new adjustable beam, new brakes all round, nice shifter, needed no welding at all, decent set of alloys..... most of the engine was usable too, just been rebuilt. i nearly went over with a copy of Volksworld to show them that fully running beetles don't fetch that much

Wow tax exempt too. Thats brill. Love seeing stuff saved specially when its a bargain. Are they worth less than they were in the 90's these days? I very nearly got an un MOT'd one on ebay last year for about that kinda money.

it doesn't matter if it's a Morris Marina or a Toyota Celica - it's what you do with it that counts

beetles are worth b'gger all unless it's something very special, like a proper resto on an early split or oval with quality parts. for an early 70's stock beetle it's really only worth as much as the parts are seperately but £100 is still a bargain.... typically £2-600 depending on condition.
unfortunately the procession of 'show cars' in the 90's hurt the value of them, people were paying thousands for something mostly made of filler and paint which maybe lasted a year before falling apart. prices rocketed until the market collapsed when word got out that "all beetles are deathtraps, i paid £3000 for mine and it's rotten". i paid £900 for what turned out to be a very bodged 1303 in 2000, i could pick up the same car now for £150 maybe.
same thing will happen to the type 2 market soon.... the amount of shonky ones being knocked out for a quick profit is scary.
