Right, my gf's Mk2 Golf GTi has started making a low whirring sound which vibrates through the floor. I've conducted a few experiments (for which I'm firmly in the dog-house for - apparently a 30 mile test-drive is not something I should have done!) to try and locate the problem. It's definitely not coming from the engine / box, because I dipped the clutch and let the car coast at about 40 / 50 and the noise continues. It slows down with the car, but applying the brakes doesn't quieten it down (so I've pretty much ruled out a caliper sticking). It doesn't pull to one side when I let go of the steering wheel, and there's no wobble on the steering either. The noise started as a "ticking" some time ago and has now turned into this low whirring noise. The only thing I can think of is a front wheel bearing, but I thought I'd see if I've missed anything first!

Sounds to me like it'll either be a wheel bearing or driveshaft CV joint. Worth checking the CV gaiters to see if one has split and let the grease out. Does the noise get better and worse when cornering?

Sounds wheel bearingy to me. Try jacking it up and spinning the wheels by hand, you'll soon hear it.

Woah! I thought I was the only one up at this hour! ;D
It gets quieter on left-hand bends. When cornering it doesn't get any worse.

I'll have a proper look tomorrow. I have to get underneath it tomorrow anyway - The clowns she got to do the clutch forgot to put in two of the engine to gearbox mounting bolts - I found them rolling round the engine bay! So I'll be checking to see if they've bothered to put the rest of the bolts in tomorrow

Thanks guys. I'll have a squint underneath it tomorrow. She refuses to drive it anywhere now as she's convinced the gearbox is going to fall out, no matter how much I tell her it won't.

I've only just got in ;D Been up the worksop stuffing loads of filler in the back of the merc. Doesnt look any better, I just like the smell. I'm starting to think CV joint know too. Especially as it started as a ticking noise.

I would still say check wheel bearing first then check the CV joint.

When my GF had a Mk2 Golf it developed a loud whirring noise which eventually turned to a loud grinding. Turned out to be no oil in the gearbox The diff had actually siezed making it really hard to get round corners ;D Check that the clutch clowns haven't forgotten to refil the box with oil after doing the clutch. -Ed

start simple - assume it's a bearing as they're pretty much consumable items. sounds like it will be with the quieter around left-hand corners, pretty much every car i've owned has needed a front wheel bearing or two during its time with me

My Mk2 makes a similar whirring noise to that you describe but from the rear of the car, if you gently apply the handbrake while the noise is there at say a constant 30mph then it goes away. That's a rear wheel bearing I know needs doing, easy to check - jack up the car and just feel for play in the wheel. You can nip up the rear ones, not sure about the fronts as I don't think I've ever replaced one of those yet. If the gearbox has been changed I'd check the driveshafts, inner and outer CV's and all the mountings by the sounds of it...

Well, she took it to the garage today, as they had to put right the bolts they had missed and re-check everything . They were very apologetic, and it turns out it was the wheel bearing so they're doing that with a hefty discount for f*cking up the clutch job. I can't do many of the jobs on her car cos I don't have anywhere to work on it (the Merc has the only space!), plus I get it in the neck for taking too long should things go tits up, so for a quiet life I let her take it to the garage! ;D Check that the clutch clowns haven't forgotten to refil the box with oil after doing the clutch. That's a good point. I reckon they've rectified it all now - the boss was a decent chap and had all the work looked over. Could have been quite nasty! Thanks for all the help fellas

Glad to hear its getting sorted I replaced both rear wheel bearings on the Polo the other day, the noise was awful, still got both fronts and a CV gaitor to do
