Having withdrawn from the BTCC in 1994, Nissan popped back in '96 to support privateer Primera racers. They didn't really trouble the big names, so in 1997 they officially campaigned a P11 Primera that had been developed by Ray Mallock Limited (RML); lower, stiffer and with far improved aero addenda, it had 320bhp on offer from its 2.0-litre four, fed through a six-speed sequential Xtrac box. They roped in David Leslie and Antony Reid to drive it, and ended the '97 season in fifth place on the manufacturer's table. A few tweaks over the winter saw another marked improvement in performance, winning 9 of the 23 races in '98. The team also offered parts and support to Team Dynamics, for whom Matt Neal was running as an independent; he took his Primera to victory as the first independent to win the championship outright, earning him a £250,000 bonus from TOCA. Nissan's work was done. They withdrew from the BTCC after the 1999 season. Here's one of the '99 cars being driven up the hill by Anthony Reid at the 2007 Goodwood Festival of Speed:

The Red/White/Blue colour scheme was THE best Super Touring paintjob IMO. Such a nice looking car, and with Laurent Aiello over here in 1999, it was dominant. My only memory of the BTCC Primeras was this huge tumble. You know it's been a big tumble when you land BEHIND the marshalls. I'll go and sit on the naughty step for not putting this in the YOUTUBE board. Darryl

Heard many an interesting story about these cars from one of my uni lectureres who used to have a company running some of the ex works cars for privateers. Very interesting and awesome cars. A lad at uni was working on one for a few races this season.

How did this little adventure come about, HW? Press pass at the FOS, or were you just in the right place at the right time...?

Am I right in thinking the BTCC Primera's engine had the inlet and exhaust ports reversed so that the inlets were at the front and got more air? That may have been the P10... I don't recall now.

Quite a lot of touring car engines eventually had that setup, it allowed the engine to be angled backwards and moved closer into the bulkhead improving the centre of gravity and weight balance.

How did this little adventure come about, HW? Press pass at the FOS, or were you just in the right place at the right time...? Festival of Speed press day. It was the single most terrifying thing I've ever done... I'd love to do it again! Those cars are stupid fast, and I know Antony Reid wasn't pushing it so much at all.

320 bhp out of a 2 litre 4 pot...... what were accord vtec`s producing then?? I suspect they were producing around the same power (race regs would probably pitch them at similar states of tune), as for the Vtec I suspect they do away with it on the race cars I can't imagine a situation when you'd need the added drivability. Same with the VVT system on the SR20 I very much doubt it would be used. Still 320 bhp from an N/A SR20DE is bloody impressive! Wonder what that would be like in an S13
