Rightio chaps and chapettes, I've decided that what I need is a big S500, having owned a W126 I've decided the next logical step is a W140. I know little about them but I do know they are bad ass. Only thing is I cant have one thats afraid of the tarmac so the grinder will get unleashed and she will be rolling low. Only problem is do any of you friendly folk know whats a good height to be chopping out of them? (will be rolling on 18 x 9 AMG monoblocks) Anything else that I need to know about them whilst I'm at it? A few pics for my modern car post...........of which I can only apologise. Oh and if you have piccys, we like piccys Cheers Foxy

Not got one yet but have been looking with determined eyes! How did you're old beast roll being that low? Scraping too much or was it liveable? I remember seeing it at USC and just wanting to lick it, its kinda your fault I'm even looking in the first place lol.

All early 90s benzes have a problem that the insulation on the engine wiring are cracking. The V8 and V12 models are the most prone models due to cramped engine compartments, lots of heat and often more electronics than the smaller engines.....

just like the 6 pot w124's , a later one/retro fitted one should sort , IIRC the engine loom is about a monkey plus vat from Merc. These motors in top spec were nigh on 100k new.. proper value now .. if it all still works

1.5 to two coils on the front, one on the rear will set you up nicely Cut the bottom of the coil in each case as it still sits in the cup nicely. Let it settle for a month or so, then see how you get on. Be careful, those font coils are under a huge amount of tension, even with the wheels off the ground. You'll want to make yourself one UtterPiffles Mercedes lowering sticks As much as I love the shape of the w126 (owned 3), once I'd upgraded to a w140's (owned 4), I never looked back. They are in a different league! Wiring loom... Don't worry, they are fixable if you can steer a soldering iron. I have had a couple of early w140's and ran a thread on the w140 forum on how to make a new one (it's only 22 wires on a v8). Alternatively, buy a facelift post '96 car, and it won't have that problem. They also went from 4 to 5-speed autos for more relaxed cruising, and coil packs rather than dizzies on the later cars v8's/12's which is far less hassle! The great thing about the w140 is it is the last of the modular Mercedes (rather than everything being linked by a computer bus), so are perfectly serviceable/fault-findable by the home mechanic. Yes, they do have a basic control bus, but nothing is coded to it, so it does mean you can swap bits about without computer says no errors.

Perfect! Just the info I was after. Been looking at a 1998 S500 so hopefully there shouldn't be anything to scary to worry about. Thanks for the help folks! My mind is made as they say in the classics, wafty luxo barges FTW!

Yes, they ARE fixable, but it is a problem to look out for, or rather, if the loom isn't swapped, you have to do it. It is rotten. Guaranteed.
But if you're looking for a 1998, I think it should be sorted, IIRC it is 1995 and earlier models that have the plague.
And the M119 engine is a jewel! Just wonderful.

A '98 s500 is just about the best of the bunch too. At the end of the production run, they threw all sorts of toys at them - auto dimming rear view mirror, auto wipers, parking sensors, moon roof (glass) instead of a sunroof (metal). All little things, but add up to a much more modern and stately feel. 322bhp and about 350ft/lb gives a nice kick when required Look forward to seeing some pics...

Interesting...
I was expecting replies along the lines of 'avoid like the plague' and so on. Especially after owning a rock-solid W126!
I was under the impression W140's were a complete liability in terms of the sheer amount of electronics crammed in to every corner of them, and most of it going wrong by now. And I never knew later ones weren't affected by the bio-degradable wiring looms either (the thought of which caused me to sell my beloved W124).
I'm just going to have a sneaky peek on the trader...

I was going to say "check the electrics!" But it is well covered... ;D My brother had one of these more than ten years ago. It was a lovely car when it went but was so often woefully unreliable and beset with electrical problems. Its engine didn't run too well either, but that too could have been electrical. It was a 1996 car; I didn't know later cars had improved. Despite its reliability, it did retain that Mercedes "hewn from solid" feel so missing from the later w220. A good W140 would be a lovely old thing, I'd say.

I'm sure the rear end is self leveling suspension, so you can lower it using the SLS valve....and just cut 1-2 coils up front max.

I'm sure the rear end is self leveling suspension, so you can lower it using the SLS valve....and just cut 1-2 coils up front max. Nope. Was standard on v12, but optional on all others except a few specials like the US spec Business Edition etc. Never had a w140 with self levelling, but from everything I've read it is far more hassle than it's worth and most people these days snip the pips and convert to standard coils anyway.
