Hi guys (and girls), I might move over to the UK for work, but I don't have much insight in costs of running a car (in the UK). Since I would like to life in Bristol or Bath, I would be running around 1500 miles every month. Budgetwise, I could probably spend 350-500 pounds every month on the car (fuel, taxes, insurances and maintenance). -Daft idea? -Car suggestions (Preferences towards: classic minis, hot hatches or v6 coupes/sedans)? -Diesel or petrol? -Any links for calculating costs and tax tables? For now, some pics for your trouble and inspiration. Thanks, Richard

errr only kidding, that's a decent sum of money for a RRer and should get you just about anything even vaguely sensible that takes your fancy. I'd recommend spending more initially to get yourself something more economical (dare I say diesel). 1500 miles is a lot.

On what system are car taxes based; weight or engine capacity? And is there an overview outhere?

Thanks!
That is actually cheap compared to NL, but insurance might be a problem with my EU driving licence (Merc CLK320 would be 5 grand annual).

The Micra has been brillant, but I'm looking for something different and new. A bit safer, quicker and more comfortable. I have a soft spot for the Volvo 480, but I need a reliable car which can be used everyday without a soldering iron

Umm, you seem to have a lot of ideas going around in your head let me put it that way. Firstly, look at the price of petrol here in the UK, you may be shocked, in fact, your monthly budget could well be swallowed up by fuel alone to drive 1500 miles if you choose any car with sub 30mpg.
Also, if you want something safer and quicker than a Micra, that pretty much kills the Mini option.......

list of possible cars i,ve owned in the past which never let me down: Mk1 nissan micra 1984, brilliant car, really good on petrol and cheap tax & insurance. (but had to weld sills on it) Vauxhall Nova 1.2 8v 1991, again cheap tax and insurance and good on petrol. 1990 escort diesel van 1.9 none turbo, used to get 65mpg out of this and also could run it 50/50 on veg oil, but not cheap tax 1992 suzuki swift GS 1.3 this was soo good on fuel, cheap tax but insurance was a bit steep there is also mk2 astra 1.2 8v, mazda 323 1.5 (1986) was cheap to run etc... just some ideas if any one wants to add

Indeed, I just tapped into my calculator 1500 miles at 40mpg and £6.25/gallon. £234. Tax is paid 6 monthly (with a 10% surcharge) or annually (without the surcharge). Insurance has far too many variables to be able to say what you'd be paying. Where are you going to be working? 1500 miles a month puts it somewhere 30-40 miles from either Bath or Bristol? Plenty of nice places in the south west to reduce the length of your commute...

I have broad taste in cars The job is in Malmesbury, didn't like Chippenham. So I would be looking for a small hatch (like: Polo) with a 1.4l petrol engine or a medium family hatch (li ke:Golf) with a turbodiesel?

Good! OK so you can buy them off ebay for anything from £150-£750 (or buy the estate I'm selling for £425 ), they are 4x100 CB 57.1 ET37 (identical to VW) for later ones or 4x100 CB 57.1 ET37 on early ones (FWD Fiat compatible), and I think you can still buy lowering kits and so on for them (identical underneath to Felicia which only went out of production in 2000) and the engine is still the basis of the 1.4 Fabia and the engine that was in the 1.0 Lupo and Arosa. Unfortunately with them being so high standard, a lowering kit only makes them look normal, but they do handle well! I had some custom springs made to go with some super low shocks I imported and built up myself, but they don't get it quite low enough...

anything under 30mpg at todays fuel cost will be £300+ a month in fuel! My Octavia vRS drinks through 5 or so tanks a month and I average about 1300miles @ 25ish mpg ;D fortunately mine is paid for by the council........or else I'd be running a very sensible small engined diesel harch back instead of the 1.8t barge. was worse when I ran my Toledo V5 (19-21mpg) or my Volvo T5 (15-18mpg!!) ;D lol
Something to also bear in mind is the state of our roads. I would suggest a Mini would break your spine after a few weeks!
