My problem isn't to do with my retro motor but I believe it spans the genres.
A couple of weeks ago after having my 'modern' car back for a mere few days after a brake problem the gearbox decided it was going to explode it spectacular fashion. The car in question is a 1996 306 Xsi 2.0 8v.
I've been having trouble tracking down a replacement box, let alone a reasonably priced one but my research leads me to believe that the box is the same as that fitted in a 205 GTi and related motors- a 5 speed BE3 unit. Does anyone know a good place in the Essex area to get a replacement or does anyone have one of these knocking around that they'd be willing to sell?
I suspect the ratios are different but it being a 120-odd HP 2.0 I guess one from a 1.9 would have similarly placed ratios...
Cheers

BE3 box from a zx, 306,405,309,205,BX,XM,Xsara,406 or just about any other PSA motor would do the job. Where abouts in essex are you, I used to work in a french breakers in basildon who i'm still on good terms with.

Cheers mate. That's very much appreciated. I've had the car about 3 months and it's only been on the road about 2 weeks and I'm meant to be teaching the girlf to drive!

shouldnt be spending more than about £100 tops on a low milesge 306 box. beware there are two types of box for the 306. i forget the exact difference but i think it has something to do with the number of levers going into the box..i forget the exact terminology.
I believe you could also nick one of a Xsara vts or the VTR which has slightly shorter ratios.
if your feeling frisky the 6 speed from the GTI6 goes straight in bu tyou loose 25% of your steering lock. oooo i miss my 306 rallye....

Thanks guys- hopefully I'll be able to pick one up the weekend but I'll keep you posted.
Didn't know about the lever issue... bum. It's an XU engine- does that shed any light on the matter?

If its a BE3 then theres only one type of box. I know the other one your talking about, its the heavy duty one that was fitted in the 2.0 turbo and some of the bigger turbodiesels. It only had one linkage compared to two one the BE3. I know this as i once sold one over the phone to a bloke in somerset only to realise that we didnt actually have one He wasnt a very happy camper to say the least

I'm not 110% on whether it's a BE3 but that's what my research suggests- I asked my mechanic to take a look at the casing on the old one and he informed me that much of it seems to have disintegrated :-D

Marelli MM8P

So yup, BE3.

Yeah, only thing is I'm not too handy with the spanners to be totally honest!
Although I did (with a lot of assistance) put a XSi engine in an XN 106. Which now is just sitting in my garage... there's a FS thread for that btw ;-)

Right- let's resurrect this sucker!
I have, at last, found a box. I think...
Basically it comes from:
Vehicle details Manufacturer CITROEN Model ZX VOLCANE I Body type 5 DOOR HATCHBACK Colour WHITE Fuel type PETROL Date manufactured 31 December 1991 Number of previous owners 5 Last owner change 18 January 2004
Would this be correct before I cough up the coins?
