Hi folks The Mrs has a mk2 MX5 1.8i with LSD - it has started to randomly exhibit a slightly strange handling trait when turning right out of junctions (and possibly at other random low speed times). It seems to go sideways! Not a problem you might think - but on a dry road with no apparent oil or other causes - I think not. I'm going to take a look underneath tomorrow but wondered if there was any known problems, or things to look for. thanks in advance:-

As far as I'm aware all 1.8's came with a the Torsen diff (well, if they had an LSD) that's known to be pretty tough. It might be damaged, or it might be non-diff related, might be worth checking the rear geometry and the bush's.

Sounds like the LSD might be locking up. Have you checked the oil in it or changed it?

Theoretically unless there's a lump of metal in it or something a torsen's diff's operation shouldn't be effected by the oil, it's simply there as a lubricant the same as in a normal diff. Although that said, it's still worth checking just in case.

I forgot the Mk2's had Torsen diff's.....(and was writing my response when you posted yours)
I'd still start with the diff before anything else. At slow speeds, I can't see any reason why geometry would cause any problems unless it was so bad, but you'd be able to see that a mile off....

Thanks for the quick replies!!! The car has always been serviced by a garage so I have never had to look at it - I'm pretty sure a diff oil change has never been part of any service and there has been no obvious sign of major leakage - but I will take a closer look when I am under the car. Is there anything else that could be checked on the diff without taking it appart? (I can't think of anything but I'm not too up on LSDs). My second thought was knackered bushes, loose bolts etc which would effect the geometry - but like MM says it should be really obvious to affect the handling at low speeds. By way of thanks - another shot of the MX5 Monoposto concept if anyone is interested!:-

Isn't that how all Mx5's turn out of junctions?

Could be tyre related. Toe-out on he rear could make the backend sketchy and it's not unusual for the bolts to strech. Bushes are always a possability but not so likely tbh. Odd if it suddenly started one day without an other signs. Get any strange noises ?
