At the risk of sounding all sensible, I would say get rid of the asbestos, It just wasnt understood how dangerous it was when they used to use it for pads/shoes etc, but we know now.

Asbestosis. The fibres get inside your lungs and scratch tiny cuts into your airways. These then inhibit the passage of oxygen (& are likely to become cancerous) and eventually you die a very slow and painful death. Wouldn't worry about it though, cheif. It's only dangerous when disturbed and there are several different types, all of which have different properties, and only some of which are dangerous. I read a big thingy about it at work t'other day (I work in places where there is hella lot of asbestos to disturb!!), but obv. can't remember the exact details right now. If you're worried, I can fill you in when I find teh document, like. But I'm pretty sure asbestos brake shoes aren't a significant risk sitting on a shelf in your shed

They are a risk when you've got them fitted to your car and every time you take the wheel off your breathing in the dust.
I'm pretty sure that if you got caught selling them, wether on ebay or at a boot sale or whatever books would be thrown at you.
Come to think of it if you caught throwing them away you'd still be in trouble. You need a licence to even dispose of asbestos legally.

anyway, what are these called? they go below the rear bumper along the rear valance. rear wing sections? (series 1/2/3 jag). ta. lower rear quarter panel repair section, what a parts book would say anyhow. on the subject of brakes, during his apprentice days at a ford/ bmc dealer, my father could tell what cars that had been in for servicing by the smell of the brakes. the drums had to be blown out with an airline on a major service fords had lockheed brakes, bmc had girling. back when brake fluids were different colours for different systems.
