As in amber sidelights/side markers... Like these: Mine has that part of the light but blanked off... if I was to fix a bulb in each side would that get me pulled/MOT failed? Anything else I should know?

As long as you have a white sidelight as well as the ambers its all good. My Golf, Polo and Transporter all had an extra 5 watt bulb in the indicators and I had no trouble over the course of the 7 years combined use of them!

I've run with orange sidelights (just a side repeater bulb in the headlight) for 3 or 4 years, no problems. Passed several MOTs - The regs say sidelights can be amber or white.
I've also run yellow headlamp bulbs for about the same amount of time, no problems.

A lot of Volvos have orange side marker lights (mine did).

If its original fit I don't see a problem. Although we had a Eunos that had come in after being failed on No rear fog light and amber side lights. Couldn't find anything that warranted the sidelamp fail and it passed with a different station but the missing fog although never fitted was a bonafied fail. Basicly sometimes japanese imports do have to have lighting adjustments to be legal on british roads.
I would advise asking VOSA and your local police on the matter at least that way you will get a definitive anwser

I've tried to read this up in the Road Vehicle Lighting Regulations (I think from 1989?) before and could only find reference to amber side markers/running lights. Sidelights should be white unless contained within a headlamp with a yellow lens, in which case they are allowed to be yellow.
I could never find anything on front facing amber marker lights however some Volvos, Landy Discoveries and new BMWs (and undoubtedly others..) seem to be ok with it as standard; if you look at the design of them they shine sideways as well as forward. I'd personally rig them up to only come on with headlights/sidelights but be able to be switched off independently. This is regardless of legality; if you aren't sure, there is always a chance an arsey policeman may not be as well so the option to switch them off is always good.

I had a U.S import CBR 400 bout 10 years ago with the amber lights always on. The problem I had was soooo many cars pulling out on me from left hand junctions thinking I was indicating!! I then re-wired them as indicators only and it seemed to really work as them old dears were less confused.

I had amber side markers at the front and red at the rear. they came on with the ignition and flashed in opposites to the indicators, like a lot of US setups. Never got pulled, MOT man never complained.
Depends on how obvious they are- my sidelights were white to the front and the indicators orange so no telling.

Amber marker lights are perfectly legal, but sidelights have to be white or yellow if within a yellow headlight.
