Right, as you all know (or should), i got myself an F reg caddy last tuesday, without an engine and box. I've had 2 completely different views on if the seat Inca engine and box will fit, so i need to know; What engines fit straight into Mk1 Caddys (Diesel) with little/no modification?
Cheers!

by far the easiest options would either be the 1.6 gtd engine from a mk2 golf/b3 passats or the 1.9 aaz from a mk3 golf.
Both very tunable and an easy fit. No messing about with ecu's and immobilizers.
plenty of info regarding both of these swaps on vwcaddy.com

get yourself on the caddy forum (vwcaddy.com) its a proper hive of info, should have everything you need to know plus some!!
check out the build thread on here tuned mk1 golf diesel, done by a guy that is well in the know with vw diesel.
short answer is get the gtd from a mk2 golf, should be spottable by the intercooler!

cheers lads, I already am - do the GTD engines line up with the engine mountings on the inner wings of mk1 golfs? caddy yes, golf dependant on small/big block. you need to swap the mounts from your origional engine to the gtd

a straight diesel engine out of another caddy will be a straight fit, the gtd isnt a straight fit, u have to change mount on the engine which isnt as simple because he mounts also hold the diesel pumps on, also you would need to make a custom downpipe for it aswell.

the gtd isnt a straight fit, u have to change mount on the engine which isnt as simple because he mounts also hold the diesel pumps on i'm 99.9% sure the pump is not held on by the mount but does on the other hand go behind the cam belt. as you would be crazy to install an engine like this without doing the cambelt i would not see it as an issue.

the mount does hold the diesel pump on, its a long plate that has 6/8 bolts in to the block.. my gtd mk1 golf!! abit messy in this pic, this was a test fit...

Easiest drop in lump - a caddy engine! I've got a 1.6d and box that needs shifting....
