I'm looking into the feasibility of getting a 2.0 Capri Laser in the next few months after I found out how 'reasonable' the insurance is (it's my first car). Always had a soft spot for Capris but is it a stupid idea?
Also- any pictures of nice ones are appreciated.

Hi, Stupid idea? Hell no. a 2.0 isnt a bad place to start either. just try get a good straight standardish one, for an idea of what not to buy follow the link to the garage on my site in my signature! A capri will be thirstier and bigger than a warm-hot hatch, keep an eye out for rust and any knackered bits. RWD out fun - careful! low driving position long bonnet might take getting used to, easy to work on and pinto engines are pretty robust and good for tuning. I'd buy another if i didnt have other things to do!

it doesn't matter if it's a Morris Marina or a Toyota Celica - it's what you do with it that counts

Its a brilliant idea, ive got a 1.6 laser and i love it, its such a great car.
But yeah do be careful in the rain with a RWD, i learnt that twice last night, almost took out someone on the roundabout when i braked and went flying towards them just missing them, and again i skidded out of lane going round another large roundabout and i was going pretty dam slow after id almost taken out that car. Will take a bit of getting used to and some very careful driving in wet conditions. But you wont regret buying one if you get one thats in decent condition and a laser can be bought quite cheap! Go for it dude

Well I should pass my test in a couple of months...but I always like to know exactly what i'm saving for (hence looking at different cars now). What kind of price would I be looking at to get something half decent? I don't mind upgrading things as I go along but it would need to be okay as a daily from the word go. Insurance for a 2.0 is £1600...not exactly cheap, but the grin factor will be worth the couple of hundred more compared with smaller/newer/less powerful cars- and I think LewisK had to spend more than that to insure his 1850 auto for the first year

That is really cheap, who is that with? I got a quote for a 1.6 laser from tesco, and they were asking £1600.
Is this as you first driver?
I woudl love a capri, but not the most practicle car, and i woudl guess they don't like motorway miles

Does sound a reasonable quote. i think they are pretty undesirable to a lot of theives now and apart from the trouble the back end can get you into i think statistically a FWD hatch is more likely to get darted into stuff. Capris are quite practical, granted they are big you'd get used to that, they have a hatchback and I recon they'd love motorways, sitting below 80 erm 70 on the motorway with a 4 speeder or cruising at more with a 5 speed conv. i'm guessing from some experience. My sapph love a good stable cruise on the motorway, it makes it upto me with leftover fuel.

The quote is from Quinn Direct- Tesco wanted £3200! It was wierd though...my first quote was for a 1.6 Laser and it came out at £600 more with Quinn. These are all with me as first and only driver, but TPFT.

I had a 1.6 Laser as an in between car years ago, could hit 110. Not underpowered at all. I stuck a later Sierra Carb on it and it went even better and got more MPG. i also put 2.8 legs on her as well. I had loads of fun with the back out and it taught how to drive a rwd. Wish i still had it.

Top idea, go get one before it's too late. Have you ever sat in the drivers seat of one? If not, give it a go, You'll be hooked!
Not that I've actualy owned one but a friend had one and I sat behind the wheel and it just felt so right. That power bulge is more prominent than you think once inside.
