I'd happily bosh £600 against that Cortina.... looks to'right to me. With the 'sporty' bits and bobs I'm sure you could make your money back if it turned out to be worse than expected. Plus it looks CLASS, straight off the peg, wheras that prelude needs 'the treatment' Thumbs up, go for it.

I've never done it but I would say you need to trust your instincts and also weigh in the inconvenience/cost of going to get something that might not be what you thought it was.
If it's cheap, not too far away and there are other people bidding for it then at the end of the day you could probably sell it on in a month or so for around what you paid.

Hmmmm, thats interesting. Two conflicting opinions already!
The Prelude caught my eye because its rare, looks good (in a retro way) and has Honda reliability. But, I don't know what the reserve is set at and a quick flick throught the internet suggests spare parts will be very hard to get hold of.
The Cortina is just pure The Sweeney/The Professionals, and is worth buying just for that alone. Add to it the sound of a gruff (and somewhat thirsty) V6 and it really starts to float my boat. One used to pass me every morning when I had a paper round and it sounded fantastic. Plus, it has the potential for a Cologne or Cosworth V6 transplant in the future!
The Cortina is 60-70 miles away, the Prelude is a lot further.
Cheers for the replies. 50 minutes left on the Cortina, keep ur comment coming!

Go for it minime! Both of those look like good honest motors to me.
Shame the Preludes had the sills and half the door bottoms blacked, why do people do that? It looks SHIT.

i've done it a few times - as long as you read between the lines it usually comes out OK I've done it a few times too and it's all worked out OK (sold a few on there too) It's all about establishing if you are dealing with a "nice" seller or a complete to55er - lots of questions and replies and check their feedback - all of it......

5mins left - I'm gonna enter my bid at the last minute. Christ, I feel like I'm about to go on a blind date or something, I'm excited, nervous and restless! lol I was kind of like that on the only car I ever bought off the 'bay, my old 180B estate. Kept refreshing every few seconds, won it by £7 but the other guy's bid (that annoyingly pushed mine up significantly) was so last minute he had no chance to increase it. So, was it you? I'd say for something unseen the Cortina is probably the safer bet and as you say offers good upgrade potential, but the Prelude interest me more. Quite a few of them seem to have that Hondmatic 'box. Edit: Just seen it was you, well done! Be interesting to see if anyone can beat you with 'most recently purchased random car'.

I have done... twice... First was a Skoda Favorit, which had a couple more problems than was mentioned in the auction (chipped windscreen, sheared bootstrut, extra rust etc) but for the price I wasn't too bothered as it was still a bargain. I bought my 360 saloon on ebay too, again - very good price, but a tad more rust than described - but it was just one of them sellers that didn't know a great deal about cars to be fair. But I've not done too badly overall and I was after a car pronto which didn't help. I think I'd try and get along to view the car if its close enough, but saying that if you get a well described car, decent pictures you can sometimes tell if you're onto a winner. Have to say though - that Accord is damn nice, I love 'em

I've done it, I'd do it again. But if I'm spending more than a grand, I'd be on the roll to have a look

a few weeks back my brother and his mates all put in £100.... they then set out on ebay to buy a jaguar XJ... after a while llooking they scored a 3.6 daimler soverign in gun metal with red leather for the top what £400 they had to spend.
they went to collect it and as you would expect there is rot on the backs of the sills and around the arches, abit on the boot lid, and it has a few little quirks such as the filler cap cover not staying shut and the air con not working.
so, over the past 2 weeks or so they have fitted a phat stereo and a few other little things such as putting the play station in the back and on last wednesday they set off to come to mine, to meet up with dad before heading off to Le mans in it, a few miles away it decided to drop all its water when the heater control valve broke and curse word water every where, so thats now been bypassed giving them no heater.
as far as i know they made it to lemans, and are soon to be traveling home in it.... ready to prepare it for a trip to the nurberg ring, and various other roads in europe before they sell it on.
will it make it? who knows. but going on this i would buy a car from ebay without veiwing it so long as it doesnt cost the world.

I won the auction at £620! Now I'm just waiting to hear back from the seller because I've just had an email with an invoice for £1240!
Assuming we get this sorted (I'm guessing he's made a typing error when entering the info because its exactly double the winning price) and it doesn't turn out to be a bag of nails, the car should be coming with me to Retro Cars Show.
Fingers crossed its not a lemon!
