With the Escort almost ready for its MOT (1st one in 5 years! ) i'm currently just checking everything over as i need it to pass first time with CaRS bieng just around the corner So, a question: The rear springs, when the car is jacked up, come out of the spring cups because they are so short...... is this an MOT faliure?? A pic to make the thread mildly interesting Thanks RR'ers

So, a question: The rear springs, when the car is jacked up, come out of the spring cups because they are so short...... is this an MOT faliure?? yup. that sure is. my mates mr2 mk1 failed on that.... to get it through we welded tabs onto the spring cup so the spring cant fall out. otherwise you could go over a hump back bridge and when the load comes off the back out they fall.... looks good though!!

cable ties FTW Fabricate something to ensure they don't fall out the cup, as that is an MOT fail.

Cable ties won't be strong enough. A piece of cambelt bolted to the top and bottom cup which is fully extended just before pop-out point should do it.

Agree with Si. We always used to keep a bunch of old cambelts in stock for such activities. Just remember to fold each end of the belt over and but each bolt through the two bits so it doesn't rip.

The MOT is (or was, it may have changed) a bit vague on this. Basically you have to jack the car so the suspension is on full drop, so lower springs are loose. BUT, if when you lower the car back down they locate correctly, that is a pass (but probably advise!) . It's only a fail if they fall out in the test. I am an MOT tester, although I don't do many, so if I get chance I'll check it in the book. Personally tho, I think they should really be strapped in

Mechanic's rule #1... If the car works, anything left on the floor after you finished wasn't needed in the first place

don't worry about it street ive had some really low escorts and ive never had trouble on mot's aslong as they arn't rattling about and are held into the cups by the rubber

Landrover guys use leather straps as travel limiters for MOT purpose. So Image the seatbelt idea would work really well.

So Image the seatbelt idea would work really well. it does, seen it a hundred times. you could always remove the springs and run on the bumpstops, no springs to fall out then ;D ;D worryingly popular mod on viva front ends under "brit rods"

Well my approach was a bit heath robinson but should be ok: Drilled a hole through the boot floor, which goes through the spring cup, and ran a mountain bike brake cable through the hole to the lower arm, adjusted so its taught just before the spring are free Wish I would have spotted the later replys earlier, a cam/fan belt would have been a bit better, didn't think of that! Hey ho, all done now!
