Model: Peugeot 306 DTurbo Year: 1997 Mileage: 125k-ish Tax: Yes MOT: Yes Location: Reading Price: £300ono Additional Information: This is my mum's car, it's generally in very good condition apart from the fact that it overheated the other day and now it won't start. The head gasket is blown (loads of bubbles in the header tank when you turn it over) and there's a hole in the radiator. In addition, it's been putting out black smoke on boost the whole time we've had it. I took the pipe off between the intercooler and injection pump, cleaned it out (had oil in it) and put it back on about a week before the breakdown, which seemed to sort things out. I'd say the best option would be a complete donor engine, but you'd probably be alright with a skimmed head and gasket. I am very much open to offers. Good points: Good tyres all round Clutch and cambelt changed recently Good, clean condition inside and out Stereo with aux input (may be needed for replacement car) I'm looking for something to replace this, ideally a reliable 5 door hatch. Anyone? Pictures are here: www.flickr.com/photos/59248113@N02/Any questions please give me a ring, 07963321687 Will

"Understeer" is when you hit the fence with the front of the car.
"Oversteer" is when you hit the fence with the rear of the car.
"Horsepower" is how fast you hit the fence.
"Torque" is how far you take the fence with you

That's what I thought, but it stopped when I took the pipe off completely and also seemed to be fine once it was cleaned out and back on the car. It was pretty thick black smoke, and only on boost. The pipe off the intercooler leads to a device on the injection pump that supplements fueling on boost, so I figure oil in the pipe may have affected the function of this. A diesel specialist said he thought it could be the EGR valve, but i'm not even sure if this car has one

This is running the old XUD lump, of the type fitted to the 205, not the later hdi, the sort of thing you'd find in a 307.

It won't have an EGR, those sh*tty things were only fitted on the HDI engine, which is a pile of cr@p, too complicated! The oil will be from the turbo, but they all do it and it doesn't really hurt them. The black smoke will probably be pump timing, pretty common. As for the head, it doesn't warp easily so the lump might be saveable....

Hmm, is pump timing a DIY job? And is there anyone in the reading area who would be interested in doing the head gasket on this? Obviously for a fee... I don't have the premises, the tools or the experience to do it myself.

Pump timing is a DIY job. Basically, the pump can rotate on it's mountings, by advancing slightly you can clear the smoke. Alternatively, wind out the wastegate and up the boost to match the fuelling, moar powerz

If only I was allowed to play with the wastegate... My mum barely revs the thing anyway, I just need to get it running again, and knowing that the smoke isn't a huge issue is very helpful to know, so thanks.

Shame! I really don't want to scrap it, it's too clean, so bump for anyone wanting to buy or fix this?
