Been thinking about buying this as a buy/drive/sell on in a bit, reckon I'd be able to make a turnover on it? cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=4652359845It's got MOT till the end of next month. I spoke to the guy and he says it passed MOT last year with no advisories or problems, has no chassis or bodywork grot, just some bubbles and touchups here and there, garaged most time. Apparently drives fine, hood is fine (with a few tears on the inside), can be difficult to get the hood up as a screw is missing from it, it doesn't have a hardtop though It's got stainless steel exhaust, electronic ignition and just needs a couple of tires and some floor carpets to be properly usable again. S'got all the documents and is not rotten. It just seems very cheap, and I've always lusted after a Stag. This strikes me as a car (given my last eBay efforts, but I appreciate it can be a fickle place) I might be able to buy and sell on at least with some profit. Opinions? For those interested, book price is ~2000 for a condition 3, ~4500 for a condition 2 and 8000+ for a condition 1 (14,000 for a concours these days, at least, from a dealer ). It'll cost me 130 for a set of new tires, 20 quid for fitting, 90 for tax, an extra 100 for insurance, say 100 for MOT, that's 2940. If I could sell it for 3500 I'd make 500, which is a fair chunk of money for me Especially as I'm not working, or mobile, and it'd get me out there The guy says he is happy to deal cash too, although the looming BIN does worry me somewhat Huzzah

I think there's deffo gold in them thar hills ;D But I'm not sure you're looking at it from quite the right angle. Buy it, do the tyres and hood and get a year's ticket on it, then put it in the classifieds of classic & sportscar etc. at £4500. The quicker the turn-around the better. Running around in it will undoubtedly show up more problems that YOU really don't want to be forking out on. And although he SAYS it's all kosher, look at it from this angle... why is he punting it off so cheap? Why is HE not sorting a years ticket & the niggles, and making a heap more money? Odd.

Yea, I did ask him that. He's broke (then again, aren't they all ;D). And (my heart weeps) he lost his garage....
Then again, I suppose that's fair enough. If you can't afford to run two cars, or re-insure and re-tax one, it is quite a chunk of money.

hmm...dunno.
it appears to of ended.
it could be great fun to cruise around in, but i'd only suggest doing it if you are certain you're gonna make money

My experience based on a couple of decades of Triumph watching has resulted in the following formula.
Stag + cheap = trouble.
Of course, YSMV and most of the real dogs you used to see will have shuffled on to the great scrapheap in the sky, but proceed with caution.

in my humble experience cunning plans like that always end in failure; it will blow up on the way home or summat!

Tempting but also a little suspicous. Have a look with a cold clinical attitude (if you can).
Better still, buy that brown sprint and then flog it on to me when you've finished with it!

I'd echo comments made about the Stog... cheap=trouble with them. They are the only car my old man said he'd disown me if I bought one, too... That's kinda stuck with me and I have to say, when I drove one for the mag I hated it - I just couldn't see the point of the car, but thats another story. As for buying and selling cars - unless you *really* know what you are looking at/buying then you'd do better investing in the National Lottery. I used to buy and sell a lot of cars (mainly Imps but also some fairly cool retro fodder) and there is NO WAY that I would buy on Ebay to sell on... wayyyyyy too dear on the whole. Good to sell through though. You are better off trawling around local free-ads, cards in Tescos - that sort of thing and going along with cash. Check the car out and then see what you are getting and offer a *decent* (no-one likes a chancer) amount for the car based on its real condition. When buying it think about the following: - What needs doing and how much is that going to cost?
- Can you do the work yourself, if not how much is it going to cost?
- What is it worth with the faults fixed?
And then ask yourself the most important question. How long is this thing going to take to sell? There is no point buying a £1500 Rolls Royce Sad Shadow, spending another £1500 to make it worth £4500 if it is going to sit for 6 months while you try to find a non-loser to buy it. <Example> Equally there is no point buying a £50 Fiesta, spending three months of your life and £300 to make it worth £400, even if it does fly out the door. <Example #2> I'd also avoid any car that has a reputation for aggro (unless you know how to fix them), such as the Stag (engine), Fiats/Alfa (rust/electrics), Imps (engines), anything esoteric (parts) and anything too heavily modified (how do you know which bit came from what car). I hope this hasn't curse word on your chips too much but having lost £1000s in the past, I'd hate to see someone else follow the wrong road. Yes, there is money to be made (and yes, I've made a few bob) but don't let the likes of Mike Brewer fool you into thinking its easy.

No, not at all - your comments are welcome! Some of the stuff I have sold before has always been sourced from Loot, LB Observer and so on, seemed the easiest way to make a ticket.
Definitely have to view it though, like you said. Hence I'm now waiting till I'm mobile, so I can go browse.........T&T'd Tax exempt 1850 near me for 500 folding! ;D
