Right well some of you have been giving me advice on how to do this for some time now, so thanks to you! I have now got enough bits and bobs to start the project. It’s quite daunting but I can’t wait for the end result. So, for those who haven’t read up on my plans, I have a Mk4 Cortina with a 2.8 v6. It’s been playing up a lot of late and to be honest with the Webber carbs on she’s not that economical either. So the plan is to put a 24v cossy engine in to help with the fuel economy (no really, it’s nothing to do with the power upgrade ). ;D ;D So here she is at the moment with the 2.8 still in. She’s then getting this beauty put in. All the extra gubbins needed Fuel tank with pump and swirl pot. Going to be boot mounted So the car is off to the yard on Friday so I can get the 2.8 out and start prepping the engine bay. Think I’m going to paint it black. Get red silicone hoses and paint the plastic cam cover red with the cosworth writing in gloss black. Any suggestions though would be welcome. This build is going to take a while as I don’t have much time so please bear with me but fingers crossed the end result will be well worth it! ;D ;D Cheers George

Luckily I have made some friends in a fabrication/welding outfit who are going to help me fabricate some of the bits I need (battery box for boot, fuel tank supports, fire proof lining for rear seats and strengthening the drive shaft). The great thing is they like the car so have offered to do it for free! All I need to supply is the metal! Very good result!

It's an easy way to get a swirl pot in the stock cortina fuel tank if you do it like this: Split open a scorpio/granada fuel tank: Bend the tabs holding the swirl pot, lift pot off from the tank after you've cut off the fuel pipe. Imagine where to cut swirl pot mounting plate off from tank: (make sure you leave enough metal for later) Make a template of the position of the swirlpot and cut hole needed in cortina tank. Make sure hole isn't too small for the swirl pot to come through. Roughly scratch circle where the outlet is going to come through the side of the tank: Place swirl pot on mounting plate from granny tank, drill hole for feed pipe, and test fitment: Weld properly, making sure you've got good penetration and no holes: Feed pipe is quite close from where i thought it would be eh? If you do this on the bottom of the cortina tank, where the tank is level with the ground you'll get the absolute lowest point in the tank to be the bottom of the swirl pot by welding the granada bit in from the outside of the cortina tank like I did.

Could you not use an external swirl pot?
Will also be following this thread closely too as I want to put a 24v in the sierra

its even easier to use the later intank pump as you can drop swirlpot in from above ,then weld top of tank with pump mount in makeing an even neater job.
you can use any efi one fiesta/escort/sierra/mondeo etc (except from the single point injection the pump is lower pressure).

If you've seen popuptoaster's Mk5 build then I would suggest against an external pot. I was going to boot mount mine but he had done this (unfortunately without a fireproof bulkhead) and the whole lot went up in flames. Massive shame as he’d spent so much time working on that car. I’ve got to put the battery in the boot because there’ll be no room for it under the bonnet and don’t really want an electrical current and fuel that close to each other. As I’ve got a tank with the swirl pot in, I think I’m going to take Funkyhunk’s advice and pop the swirl pot in the Cortina tank. That way I don’t lose my boot space and don’t have to manufacture some sort of fire proof bulkhead, plus mounting brackets. Also I would still get the use of my boot. ;D

The only thing is that the space underneath for placing the pump and filter is somewhat limited on the Taunus/Cortina. I put my fuel pump in the boot like this: I soon regretted it, smelling petrol in the boot and all, so when I'm done welding I'll relocate the fuel pump to some place under the car. I'll probably make my own bracket too. So, how about some more pictures of the car? It looks like the dogs danglies in your avatar

hmmmmm I have a mk4 cortina based kit car with a carbed 2.8 which is also rubbish lol. Was torn between the 24v and Nissan power. Problem with the 24v is gearboxes arent that strong and cost a fortune Watching with interest

It looks like the dogs danglies in your avatar If you get a sierra pump/filter bracket you can place it the same as on the sierra, mine has an internal swirl pot fitted the same as above in funkyhunk's post, really the pump needs to be gravity fed or it can overheat if starved of fuel for too long and it'll take londer to reprime with it above the tank ?

I have been looking into the gearbox issue for a while. Apparently a V6 5 speed type 9 box will be ok with the cossy power if you strengthen it. This can be done by replacing the tin top cover with a stronger steel one (you can buy ally ones but they’re quite expensive). I will be fabricating one out of 4mm steel. Using the correct gear oil will help it last too. There is an article in Retro ford (May 2011) which I was told to have a look at. Bought the mag and it’s a great help as there is a 4 page spread all about the type 9 and how to look after/upgrade it etc. If you carry out the above they say it can take up to 285bhp, think the standard cossy outputs around 240bhp. Obviously though if you have a ropey type 9 it probably won’t last long anyhow. If you’re going to be going round corners sideways at 70mph and thrash it about then you might need to look at the MT75 box but that’s a whole different story.
As with the pump issue, yes mine is going under the car. Have heard too many disaster stories about petrol in the boot etc and as I’ve said above I don’t really want an electrical supply near a fuel supply. I also smoke so that’s another incentive to move all fuel delivery systems further away from me!

Just an update,
The old 2.8 has been completely disconnected and ready to come out. Its got Weber 38's and I'm looking to sell it so if anyone is interested let me know (pm me).
Work has been set back a bit because i've had a spot of gout! bloody painful really. hope to be back down the yard this weekend. going to take the 2.8 out and prime the engine bay for s lick of paint!
Watch this space!

I'd use a golf Gti, integrated pump and swirl pot, compact and reliable can be fitted anywhere under the car last one I bought cost all of £22 on evilbay

Little update, The gout has nearly gone ;D, still hopping around a bit but at least its more bearable now. Was down the yard on Sat for a couple of hours and managed to get the engine and box out. Now I need to get all the gubbins off and clean her up a bit and get a lick of paint down. Hopefully I’ll get some more done this weekend coming.

Small update, Started to clean out the engine bay. I ended up using some Gunk I had left over for few bits but on some of the hardened rubbish/muck on the front cross member it wouldn't even move. So I popped down to the local motor factor and bought some standard engine degreaser. Think it mostly consists of kerosene but it worked a treat. From this. To this. I need to get it out of the barn and get a pressure washer on it to get out all the bits I can’t reach but I’m rather happy with the condition of it under all that oil and muck! It’s obviously been keeping the weather out.

So last night after work I decided to open up Pandora’s Box (the wiring loom!) oh my god ! Well after untangling and sorting through it all, it looks like I have all the bits I need and it still has the ignition part so I’ll hopefully be about to keep the PATS system and have the key hidden somewhere (more security, we like that ;D). I now need to get a wiring diagram and find out what I need and what I don’t need. Spaghetti junction
