ok - so the car overheats - goes off the dial and squirt coolant -big steam - nova boys laugh. but is there a point that it happens or does it depend on the system? The reason I ask is that the Marina Pickup runs hot (big engine, small bay) but how hot is too hot ? The overflow for the rad is directed under the car so if it boils over i'd never know - so is it just a case of pulling over if it goes to say 110 degrees... silly question i know... heres some primer pics

A small engine bay shouldn't matter too much. What rad does it run and what fan?

Got a nifty spit-rad system haven't you?

have you bled the system? I'm thinking airlocks? is the thermostat openign at all?
does the temp rise, fall when the thermostat opens then continue to rise?
ive alway sbeen under the assumption that 90deg is a good working temp for all engines

From the duplicate thread: It shouldnt really be getting to 100 degrees. Thermostats normally open at 88 and cooling fans kick in around 95 and that should be as high as they go. How long does it take for this to happen. Your running two rad arent you, and a standard water pump IIRC. Electric fans. Any air locks or blockages. My V8 in my range rover used to run quite cool even in the middle of summer but it had a big rad and a mechanical fan so it was running all the time. How about trying it with the thermostat out incase its stuck i 'avent given a thorough goin over, air locks etc, but i will this week... so we're saying 95-100 degrees ? i'll aim for that then ! got a bigger fan to put on too - they're thermo triggered too... cheers

i have 2 rads - they're a little bigger than a mini rad but a core deeper and larger capacity - they act like one big rad... the temp rises - the system pressurises (hoses are tight and hot *cough*) talk me through bleeding the system, see if I'm doing it wrong... i think the temp rises - then rises - then rises some more it takes about 20 mins to reach temp idling but then it's idling at about 2k as i have a prob with the carbs, that can't help can it

Okay, I can see what is happening straight away mate. How you have the rads plumbed you are effectively bypassing one whole radiator completely. What you will need to do is this; On the filler and inlet rad, block off the top hose connection, then connect the bottom one to the top of the other rad. Block off the bottom hose connection on this one. This way you will force the coolant through both rads instead of through half each. I hope that is clear! Good Luck and hopefully I'll see you at CARS!

yeah i thought that but they do seem to work together - it's definitely an option tho, and not too difficult to try out...
cheers - Rob

well whenever iv changed the coolent i think ive been lucky and not developed and air locks. i tend to fill it half up, run the motor for a while, fill it up a little more. run it . let the coolent level settle, fill it u pa little more .. repeat untill the coolent level is adeqaute. do you fill up straight into the rad ? expansion tank??
concerned the the temp rises and rises and rises some more.. i would look at the stat.

Rob, I agree with Marinanut (I think!) This is how I think the setup should be. Nice pick up by the way, bet it suprises/upsets a few people! Suffolkpaul, I have never liked running engines with low coolant levels (certainly not half full anyway), especially if they are aluminium or ali headed. I would perhaps leave them just below full to allow it to bleed the air out. Pumping/squeezing the top and bottom hoses (ooer mrs) as you are filling helps to prevent air locks as well. Sean

inline vs parallel
I must admit i did a hell of alot of research into this kind of thing a few years back when developing computer cooling systems and inline allways worked better so may be worth a try! your not bypassing one, they will both still work in paralell its just theres less flow rate through each one and that cuts thier efficiancy.
Have you got a high pressure rad cap on there as that will raise to temp that the system boils up at so can bag you a few mins before the car errupts if you get stuck in traffic!
Is it boiling when your moving or sitting still?

I agree with seantoole5, you are better having the radiators full before running the engine.
One other thing. Which is the highest point in the coolant system. If the rad is a lot lower than the pipes for the heater for example then you will have a mare trting to get water in there. What I normally do is make a header tank to aid filling. Get a 5 litre water bottle, cut the bottom off, remove the cap and tape it to the filler neck then keep it filled up with water while squeezing the hoses, makes it much easier.
