I'm looking for answers and some opinions of products / chemicals for getting rid of those dirty little scabby bastards that seem to form in the most noticeable places of your pride and joy.
I have a few starting on the door corners and arch edges and no doubt when taking a closer inspection with a grinder and DA ill find a hell of a lot more not so noticeable at first glimpse.
I have not tried any of the claimed miracle products out on the market yet but I have read some reviews.
Hammerite Kurust Gel, a Halfords special. Carplan, Jenolite.. I know that there are many products out there.
Can anybody share with me their experiences and recommendations please?

This is something I'd love to hear about as well. Both my Lancias will need some of this stuff applied (one significantly more than the other)... Did that Practical Classics test include rust prevention/protection stuff as well? Those things have to be applicable to every car on this site.

I tried some kurust on mine, it's a good rust-stopper but needs re-application now and again. I only did it to try and slow some of the under-window-seal bubbling, keep it tidy until the MOT's up and I take it all apart. Would like to know/see what other people think.

The only real way to do it right is to cut it out and replace it ... but if you do want to use some think jelanite is good applied with a wire brush keep going till it is back to clean metal and don't stop just because its black like the instructions say .

for removable parts I have found malt vinegar is excellent, you can buy it for £2.50 a gallon, stick the rusty part in for 24 hours and just brush it off after under the tap.
I was wondering if it would work on body panels if you soaked a rag in vinegar and stuffed/wrapped it around.

i've fished out the PC article... best buy... Rustbuster fe-123 £22.99 (1L) £2.29 for 100ml www.rust.co.uk01775 630958 recommended... Hydrate 80 £22.95 (1L) £2.29 - 100ml www.bilthamber.com01277 65 88 99 budget buy... Granville heavy duty rust cure £18.38 (1L) £1.83 - 100ml www.granvilleoil.com/www.frost.com01706 758 258 all 3 are rust converters NOT removers, Jenolite is marketed as a rust remover, Hammerite Kurust is a converter. it seems quite a well thought out test, hopefully they'll go back to the tested metal in a few months to see how thing are holding up.

i have tried loads of rust removers and converters and the like over the years of driving old sheds and not had a lot of success, but I have discovered that zinc rich primer from mole valley (which is a very heavy tin ) works really well. I painted the new outriggers on the amazon 2 years ago and no rust yet, even though it was not top coated. (remember that primer is porous) The only downside is that it seems to chip off easily. I bought a bottle of converter called fertan at a show last year, as heard good things about it, now, most of the things I have used starts with the instruction of "surfaces must be clean and dry" which as we all know is not normal in the real world, however, fertan ( and no doubt other products) actually works with and requires water to do its stuff......and this sounds to me that it has to be heading in the right direction!? I gave some to a friend who restores lancias who tried on a windscreen surround and after 24 hrs he sanded it down and was amazed to see that all the rust had been turned black with no sign of brown rust. lastly, have heard a lot about epoxy-mastic so bought some as its supposed to be a one stop paint to stop and prevent rust. Now I only used it a month ago, but would say its really easy to paint or spray, does not need a top coat, will sand down and does not react with any paint you want to put on top and it sticks really well too. I would still say that rust should be cut out and replaced ideally, but sometimes a product that can be sprayed or painted to slow or stop has it place. I really hope they work......time will tell!

Another vote for Kurust here, it doesn't 'cure' the problem but it's very good at arresting further development. If you're not in a position to be able to cut out the rust and put in fresh metal, then a good going over with a wire brush and/or grinder to clean up the surface, a dose of Kurust and then paint as normal does the trick and will last for a couple of years. Of course, once you start chasing rust bubbles it normally ends up being a bit of a marathon. Here's a rusty car, just so we have a picture in this thread.

i have good things to say about rust buster fe, I used it on my rusty stub axels and under side of car it converts rust very quickly. i found that its easy to brush onto vertical surfacesas it has a fairly thick consistancy in comparrison to some rust converters. I also saw that it can be mixed with water so that you can spray it into box sections. before after regards Ben.

I have used Vactan on the seams of my T25 last year and have had no rust come back at all, it sat outside in all that snow with only grey primer on and still no rust,i also put it over the welding i did under the Van to keep it in good form, it can be put onto heavy rust or rub it back first, i would not bother with anything else now, remember VACTAN it's good stuff
