I'll get the plea for advice out of the way first, then tell you the story that goes with it.
valve clearances (valve lash for any yankees)- should it be set different for performance valve trains, ie. 270 cam and 1.5 FULL roller rockers in my 3.1 essex motored capri? or, being the valve train components (pushrods and valve stems) , all grow at the same rate as stock (the reason for clearance in the first place), the claerance should be set to stock?
anyway
here comes the long winded bit.
friday night, I decide to have a look at the clearances on the capper, it was sounding a little "ticky". roar it apart, and the clearances are tighter than the listed 13 and 22 thou gaps. my old man suggests that it might have mk1 clearances, 10 and 17 thou.
tighter than that, bum. best go round and slacken them off before I burn a valve out. to ease the engine turning, I remove the plugs. no.2 coming up for TDC and a big slug of water comes out the plug hole ohshit, that'll be the head gasket then!
I reset the clearances to stock, and take it for a thrash up the road. while sounding more rattly, it don't half fuggin shift more! ;D
when I got back, there was an oil scum in the radiator, and i was hoping to get to mersea on sunday
resigned myself to taking the minor instead, on saturday afternoon, I roared the heads off of the rumbleford in record time. so I decided to carry on with the task in hand, giving it a full decoke while I was at it.
to shorten this rather lengthy (and boring?) story, I had it running on the saturday evening at 8:30. ran for 15 mins, then roared it apart to finish torqueing the head bolts down, I finished and packed away (no workshop/garage for me, I did it on the drive) all by 9:30. not bad considering I didn't start until 1:45 in the afternoon (I work sat. morning).
socinderella rumbleford got to go to mersea after all.
