Right i know what these are, but what exactly do they do, and can they help improve performance? The one pictured is currently on the bay at 99p with no bids, but is rather bulky and collection only I have not seen one in use in a long time! prob 10 years or more!

I believe it reads your CO2 levels + many more so you can adjust your timing / carb settings.
It will help to improve performance, but wouldn't help you produce more BHP than manufacture.

I like long walks, especially when they're taken by people I don't like.

I think they have something to do with testing emissions and you use them to make sure the car is not running too rich or too lean, I suppose if you got the mixture spot on that would improve performance?
If you buy it we could all have a Retro-Rides group Cyrpton tuning day!

There are lots of different types, but generally they are mainly for electrics, dwell, timing and so on. They can help identify faults in the ignition system as well. Some have C0 metering as well, but I don't think they all do. I considered one a long time ago but decided it wasnt really worth while. A decent strobe and a CO meter that can be used across teh rev range should be enough.

was really just curious if it would be a handy thing to have around, especially with all the continuing development of topghia's escort not sure if it would be compatible with my micra, or newer stuff

the one pictured does not do CO levels. its the same as the one I've got at work. most handy for distributor cars. we had a sun distributor tuning thingy at college that let you run up the dizzy off the car and set the dwell etc perfectly before fitting it in the car and timing it. that was about the size of a camping stove and very quick and simple to use.

i still use mine fairly frequently. it only really comes into its own when youve got a good old fashioned coil and distributer. It can measure all 3 gases with the gas anyliser. Its good because it can bring up spikes for spark pulses on the screen so u can see if 1 cylinder is working harder than another and so on. It can show dwell angles and all sorts. Not generally used nowadays as nothing is adjustable anymore and thats where the scanner comes into it. If u go to any proper old rolling road tuners, i dare say you will see 1 in operation.
