hi guys, been lurking for a small while looking at the unbelievable threads and resto'mods, spend probably 3 hours a day on average looking at this site, (just finished reading all 220 pages of abandoned cars. anyway, here is my baby, was bought for my 19th birthday by my dad, had been stripped to a rolling shell and resprayed, then left for several years in a lockup, my dad bought it as the garage was due to be demolished so he got it cheap, it also came with a montego estate full of bits including engine gearbox ect almost everything needed to get it back on the road, sadly although i did take pictures with my 300k digital camera (had 2mb memory LOL) i cant find them, sorry skip forward a few years and i have a photo by now it has some 2.8I vented front struts (cost £30 from a breakers that thought an old strut from an old ford was pretty worthless) an rs2000 back axle (complete with tramp bars drums cables ready to go, £120 delivered from mexico marks (think it was called)) lotus rims bought from a wanted add for £60 2" blocks on the rear and some red neck style quarter bumpers (a cut down standard bumper) also had an ally rollcage that a neighbor had in his garage, free, and some kevlar composite bucket seats from a defunct renault clio rally car car stayed pretty much like this for many years, job girlfriend being in my early 20's got in the way, then about 3 years ago, i had a house and i had a garage, so it was time to bring the old girl home looked lost on the triple axle trailer (not as lost as my dads mini did though) over the next year i started to get it together dropped the engine in with 4 speed rs2000 box, 45 delortos and that was about it at the back, i had an alloy shaped tank fitted with a red top style pump and filter king (no pics for some reason, will sort that out), and with the center console and electrics sorted it was time to try running the engine (specs on that a bit later) carbs rebuilt (been left dry for many years) turned the pump on, and was surprised when nothing came out, cool i though, so i gave it a try turned coil on, hit the start button (on the solenoid on the inner wing) and with the choke on it started small rubbish cell phone vid www.facebook.com/v/93978209494" things were coming on thick and fast, but there is a reason, june 2009 i was getting married and wanted the other love of my life at the wedding, so with about 2 months to go, the brakes were sorted with help from a bias pedal box, a single piece prop was acquired an ashley twinbox exhaust fitted, the dellortos were replaced with some webbers 40s i had in a box as the dellortos would not run unless the choke was on (setup no doubt but had no idea) as it happened the webbers worked straight out the box didn't leak and ticked another job off the list it was about 2 weeks to the wedding, and that is how she stood, only a couple of things left to do, minor things like wiper arms and washers things like that, wiper arms i robbed from a p6 at a local breakers (will get some pics for abandoned cars) washers were built using original floor mounted manual pump with a washerjet off my proton gti and a tropicana OJ bottle cable tied to the roll cage, it was now ready for the test, the test that was booked the day before the wedding... well needless to say it passed, couple of iffy bits that the tested looked over but it passed and i now had to drive it 20 miles to the in-laws place were the reception was, that was a scary first drive, didn't look anywhere but the temp gauge and oil pressure, but it made it and was there for my biggest day ever so that was step one , next breaking things repair/rebuild (sorry for the long story, and lack of decent pictures, thought it was necessary

well a few miles on from the wedding, was getting a bit more confident and was hooning around when BANG!!!!! and was stuck in gear, luckly i was all of 100yards from home so limped back, parked up and assesed the damage, was thinking box had gone, pulled the engine to find that half the clutch plate friction material was sitting in the alloy bell housing, excellent i thought went onto ebay bought a complete 1.6 crossflow clutch for silly money, went to fit it...
yeah that isnt going to work, later found out the rs box is a pinto box with a 23 spline input, but the crossflow was a 190mm plate (not a 230 like the pinto stuff, i think thats the right numbers anyway) anyway cut a long story short (thank god i hear you say) neil @ 105 speed came to the rescue sold me the correct size/splinned organic AP plate and off we go again, or so i thought
could start the engine no problem, tried to engage a gear and would have it, tried to start in gear (foot on brake) still no go, so out with the engine again, to find clutch was ok, bearing was ok arm was ok, i then noticed the tip of the input shaft had some filing marks on it, spigot bearing anyone, replaced this and robert is you mothers, fathers son (no pics of this sorry again, more pics will come i promise)

picture time drove around for a short time like this, getting more and more used to the car, when one day trying to teach an oik what a real car was, when something went ping, then ting then something fell off that when driving at, the speed limit of course, sounded like half a brick bouncing off the floor hitting the axle and pinging out the back, this was on a busy dual carriageway so couldnt stop and have a look, car was now running poorly on 3 cyclinders, thinking the worst i limped home parked up and went inside for a sulk next day i investigated and found something interesting, the aux venturi from one of the webbers had fallen out, and then the choke too, my webbers were the old type that require the trumpets to hold everything in, whats more parts were nigh on non existent it was at this point i decided to rip the engine apart to find out what i actually had, as had no idea other than a 1600 crossflow block that was apparently built by burtons 20 odd years ago step one, remove head this left me with an engine, interestingly had some +90 pistons the head some some larger valves fitted (any bigger and they would touch) ports looked a little opened but not much also had some steel rocker posts got the engine out and started to pull it apart, starting with the High cap high flow pump vacumeless dizzy somewhat lighter flywheel cam cover off to revel a duplex chain and Verina pulley cam pulled out, to find a kent A6 cam A6 Cam Application Power Band Cam Lift(mm) Valve Lift(mm) Duration Timing Full Lift VC (mm) LTDC Required Parts Race 5000 - 9000 7.06 I 10.36 E 10.21 304 Deg 46/78 78/46 106 Deg I 0.46 E 0.51 I 3.38mm CF6 / CF7 VS39 which was nice took out pistons and had a look down the bore, no lip and still had honning marks so not had much use since rebuild (despite its age) so all looking good, applied a few coats of nitromors, to stip the paint (no reason why not engine all looked good)and applied a few coats of hard to find high temp GREEN paint (not hard to find just less available than blue red yellow ect) cleaned and prepped the other bits and rebuilt the bottom end all in VHT black so should be good for a while painted the head and exhaust/rockercover/inlet fannymould and assembeled also thought i would take the opotunity to fit this little guy while i had everything out 80k type 9, fitted with a quaife rosejointed lever (not shown) had to cut and reweld the gearbox mounts but otherwise a bolt in mod (if you already modded the car for a 4 speed pinto box) also moved the reservoir pots to a bit neater location, and fitted with some 45 delorts that i picked up with a pinto and et voila started it up, ran well drive well (all be it a bit tall geared now with the type 9 and a 3.54 diff)

welcome tp RR matey, lovely motor. still kick meself for turning down a 2 door mk1 for £150- was 1989 mind. would love one now thanks, strangely enough, that is what this one cost me (well my dad) next up i thought i would get the old girl rolling road tuned, local(ish) club arranged a rolling road tuning day at HT racing at the back of brands hatch, out of all the interested parties 2 showed up, me and the clubs cheif (also called ian with a mk1 escort) his didnt go on the rollers that day as he had a diff/gearbox issue Video of the Power Run (in hd too, how fancy lol) cant find the power graph thingy, but it made 132.9bhp with a dizzy wavering upto 10deg each way at 5000rpm so not bad, that was at 7100rpm with that sorted i just drive it around having fun turning heads, loving rainy days and roundabouts finishing off with the bromley pageant (mot ran out and needed some welding and insurance) last pic of it before it was parked up for 6 months, still wearing its 20 year old paint and battle scars from storage ;D

Now this car is used (recently as a Daily Driver but that is another story) and i do compete in some light motorsport with the MMKMC.co.uk club, mainly autotesting, before it was laid up i did a few events in the evening at a local airfield, for those not familiar with autotesting here is a sheet from last year basically a load of broom handles rammed into a field that you have to work your way around acording to the map solid line is forwards, stagered line is backwards, fastest time wins, great fun, very easy on the car as all on grass, managed a coule of 1st in class trophies (mugs with 1st place on) and am due to compete in a full season this year ( 1st round is 1st may) have a few videos but only 1 uploaded, so here it is (not related to above diagram) there is a penalty for hitting a cane ;D need 2 things in that video, an LSD and a haircut ;D

Now for the final update untill after the weekend when I fit a new diff mid january I get RWD withdraw simptons after having a slightly chavvy 316i se for a few weeks (sorry for the picture) and was turning 30 mid feb so wanted to be old in style so I started to operate on the old girl, she had a bit of rot on the drivers footwell (same issue had been solved year before, all due to being left without windows in for several years and footwell bungs left in, so to start I cut out the bad bits only had a bit on the right but decided to replace the whole floor as it was quite thin anyway, cut the new pannel to fit, and seemwelded into place (no pics as I was too busy welding) next step was to make the car easier to live with no carpets/sound proofing and kevlar buckets meant it was loud and crampt, plus not the easiest of things to get in and out of stage one seats, I had already welded in seat bars for the sid mount buckets, the seatsw were good, but I think over the last couple of years the seat has shrunk as I dint fit it very well now ;D found a local guy selling some reclining corbeau boss (i think) seats, easier to get in and out of, adjustable (now on sliders too) and I could get me fat ar$e in them next was some carpet, with original carpets either being expensive or threadbare, and after market kits being out of my budget I decided to have a go my self with a roll or automotive carpet, several cuts, lots of spray glue and some awkard posistions later and I have a badly fitted carpet (looks ok in pics but trust me, not brilliant) but it made it a nicer place to be and a bit quieter too took it for an mot, it passed, got some insurance, and was up and running again, all be it old and fat, another reason to get it done was that the wifes poogeot 206 was due an mot, which as it happened failed on a rear beam abs headlight alignment and a balljoint (i hate new cars) so, with her car out of action she had to use my alfa and I had to use the escort, not a problem, other than the obvious fuel, no radio, and me acting like a loon every time I get into it 2 weeks in (middle of march now) and I find out that the diff input bearings are shot, can move the input shaft up and down almost 1cm (oops) however I still have to use it for work, so 2 weeks of very careful driving, and very slow driving later we are here (did get 25mpg out of her though, all a/b roads with town driving which I thought was quite good for 45's) at the weekend I picked up a new 3.89 diff and will be fitting it at the weekend should make it accelerate a bit better which is needed as although the 3.54 was good for a cruise made the gearing very long, rolling road 4th gear 7100rpm = 110mph anyway thanks for looking, and thanks to everyone for keeping me entertained with all your antics/rebuilds/abandoned cars I shall try and keep up the side Ian

That's a lovely example mate. You were right about the autotest video though, you did need an LSD and TBH a hair cut would've helped! The Mini driver was pretty good, but to go sideways he needed to keep yanking on the handbrake, you merely prodded the throttle - the proper way! I'd say your engine was built to 1700 hot rod spec what with the A6 cam, those +90 thou' pistons, steel rockers, duplex vernier etc etc. Is your Escort early enough to have the compression struts locating the TCA's or does it have the usual ARB? Very nice car in a rare colour, unbelievable the paint is over 20 years old too! Thanks for posting. Edit, just seen in one of the engine bay pics that your Escort does have an ARB. I think it was only the very first ones on an F plate that were fitted with comp. struts?

Bet you were chuffed with the engine internals!
The A6 is quite an old style grind by today's standards. If you ever rebuild it again think about replacing it with a Kent 244 or 254 depending how much lift your head can accomodate. The 244 will give you a bit more top end power but a lot more bottom end grunt.
