Ok... so I have a new engine for the pick-up - a lovely thing that sounds great BUT. It idles real fast - about 1800-2000 rpm. I have backed off all the stops and it's as far 'back' as it will go. Any ideas ? Am I missing something - I think it's worse when it gets hot cos I took it out for a drive and when I stopped at a junction it was at 2000 but when I set off it was at 1500 help... i think she's gonna blow ! I'm guessing the last thing I need is a fast idle in this weather

Air leak somewhere? Spray WD40 over the intake manifolds and carb rubbers, see if there's any bubbles. Cheap the manifolds for leaks too. Might be that your dashpots aren't clean, so the needle isn't rising and falling properly or is stuck open....you can adjust where it sits too (well, on all my SUs, the Rover V8s are different, can't remember how

Sounds most like an air leak under the carb to me

SUs are very simple so don't worry.

Amen. Rebuilt mine in the dark, on the side of some godforsaken dual carrigeway, at 3 oclock at night.
I only had 2 screwdrivers and an adjustable wrench..not the funnest of times...got it going again anyway.
Thing that terrified me was I was wearing my leather jacket and trucks kept brushing the back of it....really, really didn't feel I was going to be OK at the time.
