Exhaust blowing:
How can i tell if my exhaust is blowing?
I've been told by one or two people recently that the Imp sounds like its exhaust is blowing. Now personaly i cant tell by the noise, presumably ive become used to the screaming of the little 875cc and its nearly non existant exhaust system (or lack of it).
So how can i tell for sure?
I think i remember watching Wheeler Dealers once and Ed the mechanic held his hand over the end of pipe and saidyou could tell by the push/sucsion?

put your hand over the exhaust for a short time, if there is any hissing its blowing.

the engine should pretty much stall when you put your hand over the end as the back pressure will be too strong. If it keeps on running just fine - it's getting out somewhere. get a friend to block the end and spray some wd40 around should cloud up where the blow is... this is how i've always done it but I'm sure there are better suggestions

Ok, thanks for the tips.
It didnt conk out with having the tail pipe covered with damp cloth+ hand, seemed to run as usual.
Listening for noises from the exhaust is difficult, the engine being in the back means the lumps about 4 inches away from my head while playing the the exhaust lol!
WD40 spraying seems pretty inconclusive.
If it is indeed blowing then I'm pretty sure it'll be from the outlet manifold clamp. Dosnt look a great fit with years of cossosion/rust on the manifold. Undid and tightened the clamp bolts but don't don't think it did much.
Will see how it goes, i'll rip the whole back box off and re-attatch to see if i can get a better connection to the manifold. If not will just see what the MOT man says when ever its due in a few weeks.

Theres a thourght, are there any types of sealent anybody could recommend that i could use in between the manifold and exhaust spout where they connect?
Or are there non that would stand up to the heat/pressure or not act as a glue?
Cheers

black silcone sealer.
its better than any exhaust paste.

also run you hand along the exhaust to feel any gas coming out.
do this from cold or you'll have no finger prints for a month.

black silcone sealer. its better than any exhaust paste. Really?! Never thought of trying it but it looks like it'd burn like a good 'un to me. But if you've tried and tested it on the zorst and it works, I can't argue! I'd just go for generic exhaust putty if it were me. Seems to do the job alright

oh yeah if the imp has a non standard throaty exhaust it might just be the noise which is confusing people; this has happened to me!
minor blows get an advise on mot; so it might not even matter!

you should also be able to see black soot deposited in the area that its blowing. Thats probably your best option seeing as it would be difficult to listen for a blow.

Yup, black soot around the clamp If i use exahust sealent in between where the manifold and exhaust meet wont it act as a sement? i.e. stuck exhaust. Otherwise is it buy a can of coke, attack with pair of scissors and wrap around where the two join, add small amount of black sealent- et voila?
