Hello
I have a SIP 130 that runs off the little disposable bottles. As i seem to spend a lot of time "practicing" i got down them quite rapidly which is quite annoying when they're like £8 a throw.
So, does anyone know is it possible to convert it to use a refillable bottle? has anyone done something similar? if so, what do i need, how do i go about it, and where do i get a bottle / refills from?
Thank you.

Your need an air products or BOC dealer, i have a 5 foot high industrial argon bottle for my TIG setup. Cost about £80 a year for bottle rental, and about the same to filly it up. Ihve had this bottle for 3 years and never filled it! Youl will also need the correct regulator setup to fit the bottle.

Regulator from Machine mart (about £40). I run boc argoshield bottles on my little 150 welder. £45 rent per year, + the same for a fill up about once a year.
In fact, just go to machine mart, and they will advise...

Pub gas gives unnecessarily curse word welds IMHO, you need Argoshield lite for MIG welding

BOC appear to be a rip off! You can buy bottles for about £40 full from most Gas suppliers, plus my local one fills mine for £20!

BOC is the only source of gas here in OZ so you can imagine the efffing ripoffs going on here.....I pay several hundred dollars per year for rental and $40 per bottle each exchange and they reckon England stopped sending convicts here 100 years ago. GO the Socceroos!!!!!!

Many years ago I changed my driving style to cope with rising fuel prices; I have now reached the stage where I am contemplating keeping my eyes shut in order to lower wind resistance.

Just go have a word with a landlord or 'borrow' one from out back! That or go to any sort of classic car show or autojumble and get one there! next get on yell and get ringing round the suppliers till one will fill it for much cheapness! In fact i've got an empty 4 foot bottle i'll sell for £40

We have both bottles that are rented and bottles that we own. You have to have at least one bottle rented to be able to fill it up but if you have other bottles that you own outright you can get these filled on the same account as they cant tell the differance between the bottles you own and the bottles they rent out. You cant buy bottles directly from BOC/airproducts outright but they are avalible 2nd hand, (for instance alot of old oxy-acetylene bottles are not on loan and when you buy a welding set you also get the bottles.) We have 2 argon, 2 argosheild, 2 acetylene and 3 oxygen but BOC think we only have 4 bottles, one of each. That way you only have to pay your £100 a year once for each type of gas you use.. Pub bottles are better than disposable ones but Argosheild or coogar 5 is worth the money over CO2 anyday. Not sure where you can get pub bottles filled tho.... a pub?

I just use basic C02. I can can get good welds with it but admit an argoshield/cooger 5/corgon 5 (name varies depending on the company you use) gives a better weld. Costs me £13 for a bottle refill and I started with a basic pub bottle and most gas suppliers will happily exchange it.
You can buy the regulators from most decent welding consumables places for around £25 or look on ebay to convert a sip 130 you will need a one that has a push fit for the 8mm plastic pipe (I think thats the size anyway). C02 bottles have different threads to argon so decide what you want before you get the regulator.
If you are just practising its cheaper to start off with a pub bottle. Its a damn sight easier than the disposable ones.

I use pub gas at the mo. when I run out I 'll join the wilco scheme. you pay about £40-£50 for the bottle and about £20 to get it filled. I think thats about right, spacekadett uses this scheme, I'll ask him.
