Hi Maxx Can we see some pics of your Senator Shran...I looked at the parts book and it shows that the rear blade for the saloon/coupe bumpers is the same but the side parts are different. There are two second hand Royale rear bumpers for sale in my Autobahnstormers magazine. Offers around £30. I can make enquires on them if you like...

Hi foxy, I have decided to leave the Royale now and just put it on the drive again. I just can't find the torque settings. I have bought a Lexus. No doubt this will keep my hands (and pockets) busy for a while. Thanks for the offer to enquire about the bumper. I may just end up selling the Royale as is.

Not posted on this for a while as its basically getting me round town and up and down to the barn (where I'm working on my '74 VDP) and apart from changing batteries every 3 or 4 days having no problems. Got a nearly new exhaust front section from a chap in England (who got an associate to bring it to EK for me...he lived round corner from my friend) who only wanted £15 or so but I gave him £50 as was so pleased. 2nd hand 'nearly new' front exhaust section from chap in Englandwas delivered for nothing to 2.3 miles from my door by a strange quirk of fate where the seller's associate lived in my townAlso got an oil filter and am about to do an oil change as the car is sounding a bit noisy but that might be cos there are no carpets up front!! Anyway...nothing to really report then yesterday morning I go to the car and hear a strange noise when I opened the driver's door. Yep big dent in the wing "Hiya, was reversing out the driveway & scraped your car." I found the idiot who did it had been honest enough to leave a note under the wiper saying sorry for scraping your car as I reversed out my driveway. I just spent weeks repairing that wing and she fcukin reverses into it from over 20' away. I was that intoxicated off I took a running kick at the door denting that for good measure. Anyway I texted her to say I wasn't ruining my Saturday night dealing with it as I was too angry and distressed but thanked her for leaving her details. I then got a voicemail saying I don't know why you wrote you are angry and distressed. Probabaly a female thing where its all about being nice. Don't know what to do about it. Would a modern car repair centre be able to deal with a panel which has some rust on it a nd localised repairs? Would it cost me anything? Would I get found to be the guilty party as I was parked on the path (as are 4 or 5 other cars every day as there is a shortage of space in the street). I did notice the day before there is a wing on German Ebay for 299 Euros. I can't imagine the insurance company would ship that over. Little did I know when I looked at the listing I might be needing it the next day Just hassle I can't be bothered with Maybe should throw the towel in and just drive it with rust and dents

Oh, noooo. She wondered why you are angry and distressed? What an idiot. Out of all the cars on the street, she bumps the one that parts are not readily available for. I would just tell her that specialist parts are required to repair the damage (and blame the door on her too) and sting her for a nice lump of cash (just for being so arrogant). This is one of the reasons I went for the Lexus LS400 .... easy to get parts for, not far off being a classic, looks nice and (most importantly) has a V8. It is actually better on fuel than the Royale was. Well, i'm sorry this happened to you after the work you've put in to it, Foxy. I would try and get it sorted without involving the insurance due to the fact it was partly parked on the kerb ... Plus, the insurance company would write your Royale off.

Hi Shran. I'm starting to understand why you shelved the Royale. I would actually like to fix it myself (and money from her would be a bonus) but she's straight in there with the insurance which is making me suspicious.
I spoke to her on Monday and she's now telling me it was her mother who did it and that her car is damaged and, without me saying a word, she dropped in the 'parked on the path' thing. I was fully on the path opposite her house. No part of my car was on the road that she/her mother would reverse onto.
I didn't comment but reluctantly called my insurance company and told them the little that I know. IE nothing apart from what she told me.
Will just need to wait and see what happens. I just don't think the bodyshop will be impressed having to deal with a car which has no front carpets, alternator not working and poor parts availability. If they wrote it off might be a good thing as I could buy it back I believe.

Any news on the incident, Foxy?
I've put my Royale on ebay, today. I'm still not 100% sure about letting it go, but we'll see.

Hi Shran. That's weird as I just saw your Royale on Ebay before reading this post... Hope it finds a good home. If you lived round the corner from me I'd take it on (as I have some cash and the space to store it etc and could tackle the work) but right now I'm making huge progress on my Daimler and the Royale, with dent, is getting me round town so I should really just forget about other cars. Yours far enough away for me not to even consider bidding on it I will probably be in your shoes soon too re deciding whether to keep/get rid as I only bought the Royale to get me from A to B and have had it exactly a year now so its done what it was supposed to do and I vowed I wouldn't turn it into another project. Can some rich enthusiast not buy our Royales and make them new again!? Even very good Royales and early Senators don't seem to attract much money which is a shame because the similar spec 2.8 Granada Mk2s seem to go for silly money even when they are rust buckets with baggy interiors. will Royale take this space if Double-Six becomes daily driver?PS no word on the insurance situation yet which is ok with me as I can't be bothered with any hassle just now as focusing completely on the Daimler

Your series II Double-six Vanden Plas is my favourite Jaguar/Daimler the company made - I far prefer it tothe Series III (I don't like the high roofline and prefer my XJ40, style-wise) and find it prettier than the Series I. I reckon it is the best styled saloon car of the modern age. Even your dog looks proud of it!! ;D

Thanks David. It is a beautiful car and I actually bought it for that very reason: Almost exactly 10 years ago (when I was 30) I realised that I was the type of person who would hanker after a Mk3 Cortina then I'd want a SD1 or a Granada GXL and so on so I decided that buying the ultimate old british saloon (V12, leather, top spec etc) would prevent me from ever buying another project. Thing is I've had it so long that you forget it is actually a real vehicle and start looking at others again. Hopefully when it is actually taxed and MoT'd I will use it and forget about other cars and I can finish my bikes and Hillman Imp in the background. The dog actually belongs to the guy I rent the barn off and he arrived on the scene a few weeks after the Daimler arrived at the barn back in June 2006. He's overseen the whole project Toots back in 2008(?)

i had an old woman reverse into me in east kilbride last year, who also liked her daughter to do her negotiating. i was parked in the village in a non parking space, but it doesn't matter where you are parked, the fact is she has damaged your property, you are 100% fault free. i claimed on her insurance using a 'blame free' claim service, and my insurance never found out. worked out well for me. i can try and find the details if you like?

Hi Cammy. That's interesting to know but I've already set the ball rolling with my insurance company so prob too late to change tack, and the girl on the phone did say I wouldn't be to blame so time will tell. I took the day off work today to adjust the handbrake - haven't used it once since putting the new shoes on and it was a doddle. The problem before must have been that the cable was set tighter than required for brand new shoes hence the trouble I had getting the discs back on. Today I slackened the cable right off at the front yoke, per the manual, set the lever at the third notch, per the manual, tightened the yoke up until the shoes just caught on the discs, again - per the manual, and they are fully locked on six clicks as the manual says they should be. Sorted I also put my Gunsons multimeter on the battery and its showing zero altenator charge with the engine running and there is no slipping on the belt and the regulator brushes look fine so must be damaged internally. Today, I sourced a second hand one of the right type. Exact same Bosch part no. Not actually bought it yet but if it comes thru will be good as this messing about swapping batteries will become a pain in the winter when I need lights, heater etc. I then spent (wasted ?) a few hours messing around with the original electric aerial which came off when I did the wing repairs back in April/May. It is in terrible condition and almost certainly irrepairable but I ended up stripping it down out of curiosity. It could probably be made to work again but most of the screws are rusted solid due to that electrolytic corrosion you get between steel and alloy. Also even if it was to work electrically again the pr***s who snapped the actual aerial bit of in Glasgow have ruined it for good. It looks like that part is detachable so you could perhaps put a new one on but I can't get it off. I really liked having sounds on the old push button radio and didn't realise it was a power aerial till the thing was snapped off as it was always in the up position. Judging by the corrosion it probably hadn't moved for about 20 years! top cover had corroded so bad some of it has disintegratedall internals caked in white 'alloy corrosion powder'

This is a picture of the 2nd hand alternator I sought out. Its from an outfit who were breaking a very rough looking white coupe. I believe the car has been scrapped. They are however selling a few bits on Ebay and you can see from this pic that the engine is out. I don't think you'll ever see a white coupe again. I've never seen another apart from that one. Royale 75amp distributor(if the picture doesn't come up this link does work) i731.photobucket.com/albums/ww318/foy9999/Vauxhall%20Royale/305446_141852845914323_100002688247478_143589_1794651464_n.jpgThe engine is the one Shran had earmarked for his blue saloon (which was on Ebay but apparently didn't sell ) I actually wanted a picture of the rear - to check it was the same as mine - but the guy gave me the Bosch part no. from the red foil sticker on this one and there are enough visual indicators in this pic to assure me it is the right one so I'll make him an offer. Not sure how much to offer as it could be dud like mine but at least I can then get one overhauled. I'm tempted to ask him for a few more parts like distributor/PAS pump as these things are getting scarce and if you remember the thread for the screw securing the contacts to the baseplate on my distributor seemed to strip in the summer so could be worth having a spare. A guy on Autobahnstormers (who also runs a business dealing in big Vauxhalls/Opels) explained that the two alternators available on the Royale aren't a straight swap as they have different looms and mountings so I didn't risk buying one of the more common 55amp ones. The larger ones were only supposed to be on cars with A/C apparently and there are lots of these on Ebay listed as 90amp and they don't look same as mine. Interestingly the Royale parts list shows that each car has a Service Parts Identification plate on the left of the bonnet slam panel which gives 'Production Build Codes'. There are 23 listed and one of them is 462 - 75 amp. alternatorI'll need to get a pic of my SPI plate and see what spec my car was originally

Ok. So here is my SPI plate and you can see it has 462 on it meaning it had a 75A alternator from the outset despite not having aircon snapshot of page from parts list showing what each code means on the SPI plate found on the bonnet slam panelall the 3 digit numbers here mean something if you have the parts listMore imprtantly tho I got the second hand alternator and fitted it tonight and we now have a battery guage needle sitting just on the green/black interface where it should be. Sorted Can use my stereo & heater now and stop sneaking round town at night on sidelights cheap replacement alternator (RHS) took a while to find but appears to be spot onyaasss ;D

Anyone know how to display a page (like a parts list or workshop manual page) from a PDF file? You could screenshot the page using the print screen function and paste that into paint and do it that way i guess... Love Royales!!!!! Ginge

Hi guys David.....I'd have been lost without the voltmeter when I was having the charging problems as I knew exactly when things were getting ropey! I actually have a little Polo to which I fitted about 7 auxiliary clocks. I fitted a voltmeter and ammeter and would love to see how they behave once the car is on road. Ginge.....that sounds like it might work. I tried saving the page to 'my documents' but it just saves the whole CD parts list instead. Entwistle...it sure is a CS3 but doesn't yet know if it is a YCS3E or a CS3B. If you are interested there is a thread on it here www.aircooledrdclub.org.uk/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=19112 As for the Royale. Now that the alternator problem is sorted I think I might have a go at getting the dwell/timing spot on. As mentioned before I think the thread for the points securing screw is damaged and I don't want to touch it so am going to have a look at this spare distributor I got with the alternator. It has a bent shaft for some reason. Don't know how that would happen but it was only about £25 and I saw a NOS on on Ebay for over £500 how did shaft bend? part no. on distributor is hard to seen when in-situ. hope this one is same as mine

Here'a a depressing picture to sign off the year with. Am posting it because I'm sure it will be resolved in the new year. I'm basically driving around in a mobile swimming pool just now as mentioned some time ago. I had taken the front trim out but a few weeks ago noticed a huge puddle in the back. Today I took the back carpet out which involves taking out the front seats and stuff. They are out now tho and drying off in the spare room rear driver's side footwell swimming in water. front seats need to come out to remove carpetinside rear seat mount boltinside front mount is only one with a nut on stud rather than a boltoutside rear. bit rustyoutside front still has original tape over hole!

It's such a shame because the interior of this is mint! I always follow this thread on here, more so than any other and it's always good to see it at the top. Maybe not this time with an update like that though! Hope you get it sorted.
