Thanks for posting that. Its great to see someone making use of such an underated suspension system.
My Minor nearly got this suspension on it. I even went as far as getting the Haynes manual and sussing out exactly how it all worked. After reading how well his rides and handles I wish I had fitted it.

BRILLIANT! That must be a delight to drive with that set up.... compared to the cart-sprung horror that I tool about in ;D
Takes some balls to go through with something like that rather than taking the easy route of 'defender' coils etc.
Agreed it is a slightly odd choice of engine though, could leave the poor old thing neither arthur nor martha.... a Nissan turdo-diseasel from the last gen of Patrol's would have made more sense for on / off road compromise. Mind you having some go under your right foot must be fun for day to day use.... believe me 2.25 litres of 50's tech, massive weight and the aerodynamics of a brick do not add up to a pleasurable motorway experience ;D

Thats 'fuggin Mint Man' good work, when my dad started with his 4x4s he also got a 2CV for a while, that was ace on the rough stuff!
Does the Xantia have the same trick XM style suspension?
SM is a bit old isnt it?

it doesn't matter if it's a Morris Marina or a Toyota Celica - it's what you do with it that counts

Xantia uses this setup but it's more complex with electronic contols added on so the earlier purely hydraulic set ups from the DS, SM or CX would be easier to work with. I guess he used an SM because he had a scrapper available. No one in their right mind scraps an SM to get at the suspension!

The engines not a bad choice to be honest as the VG30ET is torquey even at low rpm. It's not a lag monster like a 4 pot. Peak torque is 242ft/lb at 4400rpm. Overall that's a fantastic and very imaginitive piece of engineering.

No one in their right mind scraps an SM to get at the suspension! My thoughts exactly ! The Landie is very nice, but I hope no SMs were hurt in the process By the way, since reanimation asked, there are many versions of the Citroen hydropneumatic suspension : ID : hydraulic suspension only DS : hydraulic suspension, steering, brakes and transmission (!) GS : hydraulic suspension and brakes CX and SM : hydraulic suspension, brakes and DIRAVI steering BX : hydraulic suspension, brakes and steering (and transition to Peugeot-like McPherson/trailing arm suspension) XM : hydraulic suspension, brakes and steering, Hydractive I and II with electronic control Xantia : base model gets the system of BXs, VSX models get electronically controlled Hydractive II, Activa gets Hydractive II with SC.CAR. anti-roll-bar control system C5 : suspension-only system (transition to conventional Peugeot steering and brakes), Hydractive III electronic control

My first thought was "Why hasnt he painted that chassis?" but reading again it's a home made stainless one. He's a better man than I am! My wife comes from Calgary so I'm quite familiar with the conditions there. I'd say that the requirements for a big 4x4 are somewhat different from those here. People drive more slowly there than they do here, even on their motorways. There's no traffic to speak of by our standards. In winter the roads end up covered with an inch or two of hard impacted snow and ice which melts periodicaly when they have chinooks(warm winds coming over the mountains from the Pacific) so city driving can get a little adventurous. Out of the city the main roads are all pretty good but particularly into the mountains the minor roads are all gravel. Mostly roads are straight with a few twisties in the mountains(a friend of my wife's family has a Honda Fireblade with a squared off rear tyre, he's never taken it round a corner ). When I was last there I was treated to 70mph on gravel twisties in a Mustang, an interesting experience. What I'm trying to say is that an exciting 4x4 should be more RS200 than mud-plugging SWB Land Rover over there and it looks like he's done a pretty good job of it. I know this for a fact, it will cr@p on all the lardy underpowered automatic tanks they call 4x4s over there. As an aside, they don't have any MOTs over there so you see a lot more older interesting metal. 1970s RWD Japanese cars aplenty for instance.
