Hey guys,
Just curious if anyone has any ideas.
Basically the guage surround on a C110GT-R is brushed aluminium and those that aren't GT-Rs, said panel gets come "woodgrain" vinyl slapped on it. It's on it bloody well too!
I've managed to get some of it off by heating and pulling but it's going to take a LONG (read, many hours) time and will also have quite a good chance of distorting the metal underneath as it's pulled.
Is there any product or hints or tips to remove said vinyl without harming the metal underneath.
I don't want to scrape it, scraping will ruin the brushed alloy finish that's hiding underneath.
Anyone? ??E

can you be sure that it is unblemished alloy finnish behind.. you spend housr taking it off only find srew holes, scratches etc..
what I'm getting at is, is it worth ruining the wood stuff (which you probably cant get anymore) to try and get at somethign that might not exist?? get me?
no doubt the brushed ally would look better thoguh.

don't see why it won't paint stripper is designed to brake down plastics and paint, but not halm the metal underneath.
Check the packaging before you do it though, as some may not be safe to use on aluminium.

Cheers cappucino! Will go on the hunt and do some reading. Have some wheels I need to use paint stripped on as well so I should probably get some regardless! suffolkpaul, oh I wouldn't be too worried about the fake woodgrain. Mainly because I'm doing it to my spare cluster face and not the one in the car I've removed about 2% of the woodgrain and what I've found is unblemished brushed alloy, I only assume the rest is the same.

Haven't tried anything other than heating and pulling as yet, will have to wait til the morrow when stores are open! They generally aren't at 12:17am in Invercargill. Not ones I'd want to buy Paint Stripper from anyway

A heat gun should soften it right up so you can peel it off, then just wash the sticky remnants off with thinners? But paint stripper as said above is going to be the fastest, it should start bubbling it off almost instantly

Yup, paint stripper it off. If you find that the aluminium underneath is plain and not bushed, a couple of carefully positioned passes with a wirewheel in a drill should give you a reasonable finish.

It's definately got a brushed finish underneath, so should be pretty sweet once the vinyl is off, I was dreading having to do the finish myself because I know it's something I would ruin even if just a little and that little would bug the curse word out of me forever! This is what it looks like at the moment. Car in background is my brother's 240Z.

why not just spray it??
of if your desperate to strip it, could you not have it dipped in something??

Paint would never look right on the interior.
What would I have dipped it in?? I wasn't sure and rather than ruin anything I thought I was ask the wonderfully knowledgable people on here first.

Looking at the pics I reckon its matter of softening up the glue to ease the peeling process rather than stripping the veneer finish. Using heat - I would start with a simple hair dryer rather than a heat gun to minimise tarnishing the metal. The key to getting the veneer off will be leverage. A thin long implement - maybe a ruler to wiggle under the surface and then lever the veneer back. Don't use anything that could scratch the metal. Once the veneer starts to lift at the edges it should be easy going from there, as long as the glue stays soft.
