1997 Vauxhall Astra Gsi
Engine
2.0 16v redtop (20XE) originally from an Astra GTE and has covered circa 100,000 miles. I was quoted 160bhp when I bought it, but no RR print out (lost the print out!, no really!). It is fitted with the standard F20 5speed gearbox with no crunches or whines. It also has a TTV flywheel fitted (5.5kg) making the engine very revvy and more fun to drive.
The engine has an induction kit, that could do with replacing really, and it also has a full stainless steel exhaust system, it's quite loud, but sounds good, although does sometimes knock on the spare wheel well(never given me any issues). Lots of history with it, recent highlights are new stat, CTS, and Bosch Leads.
Suspension and Brakes
It's fitted with Bilstein shocks and -40mm Jamex springs. It has Vectra 288mm Discs and callipers on the front and standard discs on the rear, all the brakes were new about 5k ago, and the car stops on the nose. The ABS has been disabled since I got it, but if you want to re-activate it you'll need 1 new ABS CV joint, sensor, and replace the bulb in the dash.
Exterior
The car had a full respray a few years ago in glacier white (standard original colour) and has covered circa 165,000 miles. It has a very clean body, none of the usual rusty arches and bubbly fuel cap. When it was resprayed there was no rust behind the bumpers or skirts, with the bumpers and skirts off the shell was washed, polished and wax oiled for maximum protection. The grill was also de-badged and electric mirrors fitted. Obviously as a 1997 car, this is a Ph2 shell with Ph1 bodykit, Ph1 Bonnet, Ph2 Spoiler and Mirrors(Needs Heated Mirror relay for the heated mirrors to work). It was factory fitted with Air-Con, that was removed when the XE conversion took place. This gives the benefit of no sunroof, which I believe also helps keep the rear arches more rust free, I guess it's also lighter too.
Wheels
The car has 17" Team Dynamic Monza's in anthracite with recent Yokohama Parada tyres. They were refurbed about a year ago, but due to the curse word roads in Hemel they've got a few marks on them, and one has a dink in the rim, that's been balanced out. It did have Mim Raffino's, but again due to the curse word roads in Hemel, one of the got smashed, and i've still not managed to find a replacement.
Interior
In very good condition, no rips or tears (even on the drivers bolster). The stereo has been replaced with a pioneer head unit with i-pod adapter. The passenger seatbelt rattles a little when unfastened, I leave it fastened.
Bad Points
Engine has a small oil leak from somewhere, to anybody who knows redtops this is no surprise. It has had a crank seal at both ends, and an 8v baffle plate.
On start up the engine taps for a few minutes, again another known trait of the redtop engine. Its not a big issue, and the oil is changed about every 3k, if it becomes an issue the lifters can be cleaned or replaced easily.
The exhaust is very loud, the suspension is very hard, and the brakes are very sharp. I was planning to use this mainly as a track car, but due to time and money it's never seen the track or the pod, and has been used as a daily driver. All my planned upgrade parts have been sold too.
If I was to keep it i'd fit different shocks, and maybe the std gsi alloys with less of a low profile tyre, along with a more std exhaust.
It's had about a grand spent on it in the last year, and is a good solid car.
I'm looking to go back into the Mk4 Gsi fold, as I want something a bit less track focused, or a funky looking 4x4(Think Paj Evo).
If I don't get the asking price, i'll switch the shocks, wheels, and exhaust, and keep it till it dies!!
