Ok boys and girls, gotta bit of a dilemma.. I got bored looking for an old Pontiac or similar most were dogs all were autos and the steering wheels still on the wrong damn side, so I bought myself a nice new toy on ebay a few days ago.. One of these, well this one to be precise.. Anyway very happy with my purchase 0-60 in 4.5 seconds 160+mph top end no roof a lovely real cow interior and a V8 bellow to match any muscle car, should be fun.. Anyway the seller requested a £300 refundable 'if there was anything wrong with the car' deposit at end of auction which I duly shoved over to him.. The car was advertised as 'will be sold with new pre sale service and new MOT' this is good thinks I, thing is I've arranged to go and view the car on Sunday which if I like it the seller has asked for full payment then and there.. THEN he will take it into the local TVR dealer for a service and MOT, and he'll deliver it to my door, (he had said you can come back and collect it but when I objected he offered delivery) What do you guys think would you hand over a substantial wedge of cash to a private individual (obv I would get a receipt) and hope it all goes to plan..? I've bought quite literally hundreds of cars and never had to go through this ringmarole, but then I've never bought a car like this value car privately, the only cars I've bought that were either more expensive than this or specialist/classic than this have all been from dealers or done by bank transfers/cheque and collected as soon as it's gone through so I've not worried about paying beforehand and collecting later when it's all finished/prepared. I'm tempted to bring a couple of grand cash and say the rest on delivery, whaddaya think..??

handing over large amounts of cash to someone you don't know ...then hoping they will return later with your car doesnt really take a lot more elaborating...but its your money and your choice

Don't do it! I agree with vitesse6. You really can't trust anyone and there's no way I'd be handing over that cash without driving the car away and the v5 signed. Putting £300 deposit down should be enough to persuade a genuine buyer you're not going to do a runnner. I'd want the car mot'd and serviced THEN give him the money.

id just take it as is and tell him you'll sort the rest unless he's a trader +1, with an obvious reduction in price.

I *very* rarely post on here, but I do read the boards every day, but I just had to reply now. There should be warning sirens going here that you should take notice of. A £300 quid deposit on an agreed sale with a service should be enough to convince the seller you're legit. Even if you disappear he'll get that money back on the next sale by telling people it's been TVR serviced. Better wary than sorry.
Nice car though... ;-)

sounds a right faff. Sounds like the way some of those scams work.
Mind you someone was telling me how a mate of his sold a car to a chap from Italy who sent a cheque... you know the story... transport company... yeah? And it was all legit, apparently thats how he buys lots of cars despite it sounding just like a Nigerian ripoff.
WHo knows

Ask how much the service and mot is, take that amount off the price of the car, and then offer him that.
If he says no, you have to wonder why.

Thanks for all the advice...
This was my gut as well, but I asked over on the Mustang forum as well, and a lot of answers were basically "what's the problem" " i paid for a car three weeks ago, it'll be delivered next friday" was one answer...
The guy seems legit on the phone, if a bit bumbly and vauge he gave me his full adress and numbers ect, in a nice part of rural Glousteshire, i will be viewing the car at his house (same as V5) and provided I get a full recipt the history and the V5 signed over, surely it's mine and if it doesnt turn up than that's theft...?
I dunno RR is looking very cynical though in comparison to the Mustang owner Club!
Instinct says DODGY, but in many way it seems ok if it were a dealer they'd be no problem/issue, I've handed over twice this for a modern in a dealership and wandered away for week so the car could be prepped/MOT's, didnt think twice..

A dealership is slightly different as there's more protection in law for a start. Go with your gut feeling, but as I said earlier it's better safe than sorry. There's plenty of good TVR's out there (a friend owns one), so you can afford to walk away if you're not completely comfortable.

Never realy know i guess till you do it.
Imho it seems dodgy. Like hes going to do a runner as soon as he has the dosh?
Never know he might be skint, Lost the rent on the house and about to curse word off.
He might live there.. ATM! and you might sign that logbook, But its only relivent if he send its off. And surely the reciept will only be relivent at that address...
So many posibilitys. Personally i wouldnt do it.
Another thing, Is there such thing as a TVR DEALER? don't they get sold thru dealerships like meridian modena that sell posh stuff...
