I loved the Sapphire but wasn't as successful as the 3dr. I heard a rumour that the Saphhire was actually torsionally stiffer than the hatch, makes sense with such hude glass areas.

Ford Motorsport wasn't 100% sure what way to go in 1987. So they looked at developing both xr4x4 and 3 door cosworth. At the first event in Monte Carlo, they entered one of each as works entries. The xr4x4 was again entered in Sweden as it was thought the 4 wheel drive would be more benefit than the more powerful but rear drive only cosworth. Amoung the notable drivers that rallied the xr4x4 were Colin McRae and Stig Blomqvist. Stig managed to put the car on the podium with a second place finish, a feat that was only bettered by the more renowned cosworth only once in the history of the world rally championship.
