I've been cruising in this all summer with no problems .....apart from running out of fuel ( no fuel gauge) annoyingly I hadn't connected up the fuel reserve lever so I had to pull the tank out by the side of the road and move the tap by hand ...got me going though. I also had enough of the dreadful seat covers ,they got really uncomfortable and I can't afford to get them recovered so did the right thing and went all "scene" and made some from coffee sacks .. It's way more comfortable and is nearly cool !! A week or so ago I took it caffeine and machine to their acas night (air-cooled appreciation society) which happened to be their 3 birthday and some sort of Porsche night ( Tuthill Porsche had a few cars there) . I got there quite early so had a prime parking spot right in amongst it ....I felt a little out of my league. It was the oldest car there by miles, there must have been 50 911's there, I was between a pair of RS's !!! It was also the first time I've driven it in the dark ....the lights are abysmal .You know your lights are bad when you can see your owns cars shadow from the dipped lights of the car behind !!

I got the side windows in a while go ...it was an horrendous job . You have to hammer the glass(!) into the aperture....rubber mallet but you get the idea. I got some side trim and a nose badge as well. Wipers and wiper arms are all new to. Everything for a lowlight ghia is way too much money , even for repro stuff (all these bits are repro). It's looks quite complete now.

I've made loads of progress on this and been super slack on post updates . So, I was road legal and had gears and paint of sorts . Next was wiring and windows . It was never going to use a stock wiring loom, good repro looms are super expensive and would have stuff missing that I want so I free styled it . It free styled the the loom in my beetle and it's been perfect . I work in an electronic factory and used to wire audio mixing consoles so I know a little about wiring ...enough to figure out a car loom ...and I quite enjoy it !! I bought a cheap fuse box : Originally , there wouldn't have been any relays and only a couple of fuses. So I thought I'd relay and fuse just about everything . The dash switches are a bit old and "loose" so they'd benefit from a bit of help from a few relays. Wiring pics ain't too interesting but : I've had the headlights, tail lights and indicators in stock for 10 years !! The dash looks good with the speedo and a few switches . I bought a fancy repro st christopher horn push and had a lovely NOS SWF red flashing indicator stalk I bought 10 years ago . You can see the foot headlight dip switch in the that pic as well ....old school. I ordered a new windscreen ,rubber and trim and a new rear screen rubber and trim ...they took 3 months to arrive ( #brexit #covid) I not saying how much money they were.... Me and my mate Steve have fitted load of windows in VW's over the years so one night we got them in .....what a ball ache Sorry for the potato pics ...I didn't realize how scratched the lens protector was getting on my phone. It now had wiring ,windows, gears and an engine !! I started driving it around the block a little but to be honest I think ghias with no bumpers look absolutely dreadful so I had to bite the bullet and get some .... Original ones for my ghia go for around 4/5K.....get in the f'ing sea !!!! Stainless repro one are available from the usual Vietnamese suppliers for way less so they were ordered and I waited 6 weeks for them to show up . When they did I was dead impressed !! really good quality!!! I went for non towel rail euro style ones and fitted to the car : (I pulled off the lens cover by this point!) and that's sort of what it looks like now . I've done a couple of hundred miles with no breakdowns . Loads of bit and bobs to do but it essentially running and driving (and legal) and just about the best looking car on the road (in my opinion )

Whilst , I was doing all the gearbox stuff and the paint stuff it dawned on me that I "might" actually get it to a point where I'd like to drive it on the road in the nearish future ...the only problem with this was that it has never been registered in the UK . I was a US import years ago and hadn't even been put on the nova database .I've been worrying about this for years so it was about time I gave it a shot . I started trying to contact HMRC to get it on the NOVA database and eventually got a chaps direct email address and filled in the form and sent him all the docs I had ....maybe he got fed up with me emailing him but he just did it !!!! and just like that I was on the NOVA!! Then I filled in the DVLA form (V55?) and took pics of all the vins and ID plates and did a nice groveling letter and sent off my 55 quid ....3 weeks later (!) the V5 came through and with a cool pre age related reg....unbelievable. Maybe they are all working from home trying to watch loose women or something ,pressing yes ?? So now it's registered, taxed (free) , mot exempt and insured so fully road legal !! It had no wiring ,lights windows etc but still ....... It was a massive deal , I've had it over 10 years ,chuffed to bits .Only took about 4 weeks to get it fully sorted . Pics to keep it interesting Because it super early (first 6 months of production ) it got a cool Karmann body number , I think they stopped doing it in 57 ? and I it has a body coloured fuel tank which is 56 only as well.

I was still not able to get the car into reverse which is a bit of pain in the when you're trying to turn it round to work on the different ends. I did a bit research about the shift "hockey Stick" . It turned out I needed to use a kinked split bus version the one I put in I though was straight but the kit I bought was a split bus kit so I thought it was going to the right one ... not cool . The only real way to find out was to open it up and look , easier said than done . Engine ancillaries off, engine out ,wheels off, brakes off,box out , nose cone off ......... She's straight all right . Here it is next to a used bug one . These are the shift cups , the bottom one is reverse and because I'd effectively lowered the pivot point the straight arm couldn't get into the reverse cup without fouling the 1/2 cup : There was a world shortage of split bus kinked rods which was a bit of nightmare. There's was no way of knowing when one might show up so after a chat to a gearbox builder who said "just bend one, that's all VW did " I tried to bend one . I had a couple of used bug ones in the haul of gear stuf I got to practice on ,here's what I came up with : I put it together on the bench and was able to get all the gear inc reverse with mole grips ...WIN . So I got the new and bent that one ( bit of heat and a big hammer ). It worked perfectly . The dimple on the rod was in the wrong place so I welded it up so I could drill it where ever it needed to be . I threw it all back together and now it easy to adjust and all the gears are present. Another step closer.

When the brakes were done it's occurred to me that it might actually drive !! I've this car for nearly 10 years and never driven it . SO I ordered a couple of new tyres , painted up a pair of steels and got it running . Behold !!!!! This was big big moment . I tried to look cool but couldn't help grinning like a goon whilst my wife laughed at me for being so excited .... I look like a giant getting out of it !!!

I've done loads on these and been a bit lazy on the thread updates. I'll try to keep it order. After I got the Axle tubes painted up a fitted the box and the got he rear brakes on and connected up . It needed new brake lines and handbrake cables. I've had the drums for years , they are 50's new old stock I think .I most interesting thing about early VW rear brakes ( it's all relative ) is how they dealt with he gearbox oil that gets through the seals .On a late car it just dribbles down through a hole in the bearing clamps and out the backing plate . On the early cars they had a cool oil catch contraption that poked out a little hole in the drum ,spun with the drum and flung it out out onto your wheels . Stops your wheels rusting I guess .........

I have one of those 5KW Chinese diesel heaters in my garage. It exhausts outside so no moisture or fumes, it has a thermostat and remote control . It runs from a car battery I charge periodically ( it has a low voltage shut off) . I get super cheap red diesel from the farm up the road for next to nowt . It was about £120 direct from china but turned up a bit smashed so they gave half the money back ! result .I fixed it up and it's been going for 2 years . It works perfectly for me. The only downside is that it's quite loud .

once I'd seen it running I got a bit exited and started getting the parts I needed to made it actually work . The gearbox needed a new nose cone and it needed axles and axle tubes. The old chopped nose cone looked like this ; To fit "late" (70's) box in an early car you can use a split bus nose cone and hockey stick to drop the shift rod down an inch or so . So I scored one The hole the rod fits into still needs opening up a little but it makes it possible . The drive shafts and axle tubes are also a curse word. Again an early car needs to use different axles and tube than the vast majority for parts available .They are a bit narrower and way harder to get..ie expensive because folks want them so they can fit bigger wheels under stock arches . In a pure stroke of luck I spotted and ebay ad for a stripped gearbox and it was hard to tell whether they were early or late and the guy obviously didn't know what they were. I got him measure them and they were early !!WIN!!. Turned out he'd stripped a couple of boxes for Hewland conversions for a single seat race car. He even had a couple of F1 cars in his lock up when I went down to pick it all up! . I came back with boxes of useless cogs and some gold dust axles and tubes. bit of a clean up and a bit of satin black It's ball ache fitting the axles and tubes because you have to set the play with paper gaskets .......I got it all together and in the car eventually ..no pics though . Brakes next .

I've been hitting this quite hard for the last months and made loads of progress. After I bodged the chopped gearbox in I hung my old camper engine in there and got all the old bits of tinware and old ancillaries I've been hording for the last 20 years and managed to get and very rough looking but fully functioning engine up and running. And it runs!! probably the first time ever in years. Good morale booster that .

It looks like someone has cut a ruddy great hole in your tunnel!! It'll have been for a clutch cable change. I think I'd want that closed up . Cool buggy though ! I had a 1970 GP1 for a few years .I had a massive crash in it , proper near death experience.

Thread from the dead !!! It's been years since I've done anything to this car ....it's been waiting patiently in a barn for me to finish with fatherhood , finish the beetle and finish the bus .....the beetle is finished and the bus is mostly done .....the fatherhood bit is taking longer than I expected .....5 years and counting ! Now the weather is rubbish the beetle was sat in my home garage doing nowt so I decide to swap the ghia and the bug over so I can tinker with the ghia at home . It's not been outside for 6 years . The barn it has been in is not exactly dry so I built a big box covered in DPM years ago for a makeshift spray booth which has help a bit but there's still loads of surface rust on the outside where it was just rattle can etch . I'll need to baremetal it again . One of the reasons I wanted it at home was so I could use it as a useful place to hang an engine to use as a test bed for a couple of electronics projects I'm doing . If anyone has seen my bus thread you may have seen it (the bus) got a new engine , that engine was originally destined for this but this was never going to see the road in the next year or 2 (!) so the bus got it with carbs . I'll fanny around with the old bus engine in the ghia until a new one can be sourced/built . I still want to get the DIY injection setup working for this . As soon as I got it in the garage I started trying to get it ready for the engine , There was no gearbox fitted so that was the first job . This is a very early car and the late (ish....70's? ) swing axle box I had in stock has a different nose cone that doesn't fit .I knew I'd never need it so I chopped it off ! It went in ok then : There's no shift rod now but there also no axles no I'll not be driving it anywhere. I'll need to get a split bus nose cone from somewhere eventually . It's nice to have something to do in the garage again ...it'll get me away from the telly !

I have a set of 4 JGE Kozmiks getting in the way in my garage . I got them quite recently to harvest the front tyres and maybe fit them to my van but that's a no go . They are 5.0j X15 and in 5X130 PCD (Porsche). They've never been on a car but have all had tyres mounted . 2 have tyres still fitted (slightly used Vredestien Sprint 185/70/15) 2 are bare wheels . There are very minor rub marks from tyre fitting/removal but just about as good as new . These pic are from the ad got got them from (hope you don't mind Lee!). I can get detailed pics if anyone is interested. Yours for a very reasonable £400 (talk to me ) pick up only (oxford) Thanks Chris
