Great project ... I am using the MX5 brake and clutch pedals in my MK Indy and they fitted pretty nicely once I chopped them up a litte. I did have to heat and bend both pedals, cut off the pedal pads and weld them on straight for the pedal pads to be in the right spot for my size 10s. Wish I could have used the gas pedal too, but there doesn't appear to be enough room. -Steve

Now this is pure ignorant speculation on my part so value it for as much as it costs you. I wonder if you have an oiling problem in the engine. The loud ticking symptom made me think you might. I have an MX5 and it go low on oil once and the engine ticked pretty loudly from the cam lifters which probably weren't filling with oil. Not even sure if the K series has hydraulic lifters.
I'm glad you're committed to the car, it's a testament to your passion for it. If you dig around online (I did once) you will find spreadsheets or calculators for working out what M/C size you need for your braking system and pedal ratio. Someone mentioned Staniforths book, I think he's right that there's a section for doing the calculations for a braking system, albeit unassisted.

The XR4ti was sold in the US and Canada only and was a 2.3L 4 cylinder turbo car using the 'Lima/Pinto' engine, the XR4i was normally aspirated 2.8L V6 using the 'Cologne' engine. Also, there were other small safety differences specific to the US market but otherwise the cars are the same.
The XR4ti has a ton of potential and there's still a lot of aftermarket support for the engines over here as the Lima engine was also available in several other US Ford cars.
The 1st iteration of the Sierra Cosworth was based on the XR4ti and Andy Rouse used a modified XR4ti in 1985 to terrorize the German cars and win the BTTC before the Cosworth was released.

I race quite a few autocross events in mine. Not sure if they have those in the UK, but it's cone dodging around a timed course. Anyway, suspension is pretty important, more so than power in fact, and the local Miata hacks have a pretty standard suspension kit we put on that lowers the car as almost as much as you can stand and has some pretty drastic improvements to the grip without the car being ridiculously harsh. Anyway, if you're interested I'll list the whole package.

Rubbish action film, but a ton of retro car porn. Worth the DVD rental just for the Cortinas, Granadas, Jags, etc.

Exactly like that, angle grinder and then welded a plate over the top, the windscreen was broken when I got it so rather than replace it thought it better to just get rid Sweet! I'll likely be keeping my screen on when I chop it up for a track car, I'm a wimp! -Steve

Nice!
I have a really nasty looking '95. Too ashamed to put up pics the paint and interior look so bad. The rings in my motor are so worn it burns a ton of oil and when I remove the oil filler cap it spits oil all over the place! I'm sure the compression is down quite a bit. I have too many other projects to have time or space for this to fix anything so I just put oil in and drive it.
All that aside the car is fun as hell to drive. I put on some really nice wheels (6UL) and tyres (Hankook Ventus R-S3 in 225) and excellent suspension that makes this the best handling car I've ever driven. My suspension is a racing beat front ARB, Eibach springs, Koni Race shocks, Flying Miata bumpstops and rear shock mounts.
When I've knocked off a few projects my plan is to put a JDM (cheap/low mileage) motor in it, strip it out and basically have a track hack.
TMI, I'm sure, but it might be useful ...

Lovely work! Lovely car! Really looking forward to seeing you make progress ...
At first I couldn't decide why you wanted to go to the effort of grafting the Audi plenum onto the intake runners, but now it all makes sense.
The wheels look a little inny, would they rub with some small spacers to get the tyres closer to the arches?
Keep it up, mate, good work!

If I understand what I read, the Davrian shell and body parts you have will be a plug for you to make molds and make your another shell and panels? Just so I'm following along ... :^)

And this is to get a car working, yeh? hahah ... -Steve Not to get it running, no... it is already running really quite well. It just has a few quirks that I just can't get to the bottom of- for instance the open-loop lean running problem, the EGR circuit and a couple other foibles it has. I understand completely, I can be a bit of a bulldog myself! That was my first attempt at a bad joke of 2012! I admire your effort and skills! -Steve

Love the Davrian. I would be sick starting with that shed, but I bet you make it spectacular.
I prefer the front end without the cut outs for the indicators and fog lights. I like smooth, I guess. How about small motorcycle indicators (or something) actually inside the plexi headlight covers, sat in front of the headlights. Would that be legal?

Lovely. My mate had one when we were in our early 20s when I had my MkII 1.8L Astra GTE and I remember the thing was fast and much more fun than my Astra.

I took some measurements of the 350Z engine today and it's pretty tall (27") but it's nicely short at 21". I had thought about one in my MX5 which burns about half a pint of oil a week.
The transmission/shifter is 5' from the crank pully so it's about 6" rearward of where my MX5 shifter comes out. Might be a struggle to get one in a MGB anyway. The sump is also pretty flat and would require pretty extensive modification (or scratch build) of the front cross member. I think it'll fit nicely in my Volvo 240 though.
A Mazda MX5 engine and gearbox would fit well and it's been done a few times. FWIW, the MX5 engine has a rear sump.
