[quote author=" georgeb" I suppose the problem they have is although Taal volcano is quite small, the lake in the caldera in which it sits is 22km at it's widest point, so obviously something pretty spectacular happened a good while back. Spoke to my lawyer who lives a bit further south today, and she's still okay but is definitely baiting her breath! Yeah - I thought just that when I looked Taal up on google maps. Small.....? Depends which bit you look at! In my book anything that made a hole 22km across needs to be viewed with concern if it starts kicking off again...… Nick[/quote] Yeah, I had a quick gander at Google..... Hmmm, didn't realise Pinatubo was so close as well. Mind you, in comparison, Taal looks like a more serious contender to the Worlds Most Loudest Bang cometition (unless you count the cretin who drives his latest 'souped up' car past my house every night at ten pm backfiring like Frankenhealey's Bob The Dog..) Be careful out there George.

Excellent work sir, a true engineer! A few years ago I had the priviledge of visiting a workshop that rebuilt Merlin and Griffon engines; it is truly amazing how much fine engineering goes into something that may only last two or three hours use. Such is war....

A lot of the parts came out of the R75 development so there is a fair bit of interchangability between them. Still very 'Rover' inside at this stage.

We seem to have a lot of UK trained engineers in New Zealand. Yes, because we're treated like cr@p in the UK. Years ago I was assisting with the installation of new machinery into the factory I worked in, helping a mix of German, Swiss and Italian engineers. By the time they left, they were collectively mortified at how badly engineering staff in the UK were thought of. The attitude then, as now, is "Anybody in Europe is better than you lot!" Trust me, I can prove otherwise........

Errrmmmmmm....... Not the best idea, but seeing some of the 'repairs' that programmes like "Pimp My Ride" found in the US, it's quite a good one.... (I was thinking of the US Escort episode that was a cut'n'shut with brass wood screws and filler....)

As the brake van has arrived in Quorn yard I was able to pop along and tidy up. As it was a cold but sunny day I had a picnic! It's surprising how much heat they can kick out, especially with some forward motion or a stiff breeze....

I have one of each - a R75 Mk2 1.8 Connie SE and a MG ZTT 135+ auto remapped to 160Bhp. They are chalk and cheese to drive, despite being 'the same car'. The 75 is a long distance loper, even with the 1.8, and is very smooth and quiet. The ZTT is the dog carrier and Audi botherer, it 'sporty' on the suspension and goes like stink once I stop the front wheels lighting up. Because the Chinese bought the rights to the '75' and only stopped producing them a couple of years ago, there are plenty of 'official' upgrades and thanks to the likes of Rimmers and DMGRS, as well as BMW and JLR, spares aren't too much of a problem as long as you ASK who has the bits. I chuckle when I hear of new cars being sold with touch screen CD/DVD/TV/satnav/reverse cameras etc - thanks to the upgrades, my 75 has all that anyway! These guys know a lot about the problems and how to get round them the75andztclub.co.uk/forum/

If you wanted to do a, "How not to run a railway project, 101", this is it! You wanna bet? I raise you an MD who worked for a travel agents, Eng Dir who legged it as soon as possible and management who have never worked on a railway before and have ex-forces 'management qualifications' written in crayon on toilet paper. Sick of it all.

Can't be too often you stumble across a steam heat boiler these days! That'll have increased your mileage over the winter months... Shame to hear about the engine woes though- guessing the hunt is on for another crank now? Particularly annoying when you thought you had a suitable spare in stock. Well, luckily for us,new arrived that Rugby Radio Station was being demolished and a well-known preservationist had grabbed the four EE 12SVT engines in the emergency power station! A few quick emails and phone calls, and a visit from our EE guru from Leicester and we managed to close a deal for a 'short engine' with almost new crank for a very good price, so it can be built up using our already sourced parts. So then this happened...

Oh, but we did have one good bit of news earlier in the year! Thanks to looking at the right Facebook account, we managed to acquire a piece of equipment that the loco hadn't seen for fifty years...... a boiler! Thanks to the Museum of Internal Fire in Ceredigion, we got a fully rebuilt Clayton RO2500 steam generator for fitting, once the necessary mods have been made to the modified boiler to get it to work on 110v dc again.

Holy thread update Batman! I thought I'd better write something as flyingphil keeps making me look lazy on here.... Anyway, 37003 was soon tripped down at low speed from Ruddington to Leicester for work to start along with the prototype HST power car and some other stuff (it used to be visible on Google Earth but they've updated it since then). With all the other spares on site, work started on prepping the parts, only to find the heads were either worn out or cracked; we took the decision to fit the stronger and easier to acquire Mk3 heads, and also the cylinder liners were, shall we say, overtired. They were suffering from cavitation corrosion which had taken the wall to minimum thiockness - very annoying as internally they were all in spec! So, new liners as well..... One thing led to another and 37003 was parked to one side as the companies workload increased with the closure of Derby station for remodelling - all the trains that usually went to Derby for refuelling had to visit Leicester instead - and it was very busy! Anyway, eventually 003 reentered the list of work and a start was made, only to come to a shuddering stop when it was discovered the main crank had shelled a journal due to overheating - further investigation found our lovely, as new size crank was scrap. Talk about a kick in the.......

Interesting link sent over by mate Craig. www.smythkitcars.com/I guess it would still be up to the builder to to get that finish. Hmmm, I recall a fair old kerfuffle over that sort of kit and whether it would be 'legal' in the UK a few years ago. Can't remember what the outcome was (I think I got bored...)

Very, very underrated cars - I had a 216 Sli which ended up on 18" MG straights and stiffer rear springs (only to tow a trailer and survive two teenage kids in the back). Me and The Boy did a Pistonheads RAF Marham track day in it after my car at the time (Marina GT) decided to lunch its clutch slave. It took all the punishment we could chuck at it all day (100mph+ and some very hard braking), drank a tank of petrol and tore one tyre to the cording, but didn't miss a beat (unlike some more exotic fare). The poor thing eventually suffered at the hands of a right d*ckh**d MOT tester who fried the engine (don't ask; I still get angry...). It never really recovered from that and went to an old boy who toddled around in it until a local car sales part exed it and it vanished.

Tarting the old girl up for the long & lonely drive to the Gathering and I considered sticking on a 'Powered by CUMMINS' badge but then I found a little something in the USA which adequately describes the zen journeying of the Goddess. If you see a Sperm Whale and a bowl of Petunias by the side of the M40 in a couple of weeks time you will know it worked AWESOME! WANT!!
