I'm not sure whether HotWire will allow this to stay, but seeing as most R-R ers are into engineering in one way or another, I'll bung some info up and see where it runs.... For the last 25 years or so I've been involved in one way or another with sorting out a piece of British engineering from when we built things for the world. Let me introduce the 'toy'.... Built in 1960 by English Electric of Newton-Le-Willows, 105 tons of pure British engineering powered by 1750Bhp twin-turbo V12 diesel, 80mph flat out with 1000 tons on the drawbar and above all, no silencers so it's LOUD (earwax shifting style..... ;D) This is what it looked like in 1998 when we bought her, except tattier and missing one vital lump - an engine. It took some time to find a good one, and the swap isn't exactly like hiring a crane from HSS and doing it on the drive..... Suffice to say, it eventually worked and she went to Wensleydale Railway and then Weardale Railway, but she's now 'home' in Norfolk at Dereham having some more work carried out to the main generator bearing (11" diameter.....) before being put into service next year. This is what she looks like now....

That engine is massive! Is this one related to the deltic in any way, looks very similar to me. I see these and always think of the deltic engine, with the three crankshafts, not a v12.

Same company built it, sits on the same design of bogie. English Electric are a bit like Meccano; lots of similar bits that can be arranged to make what you want.

'Deltics' are Class 55, you can tell the difference from the twin window, rather than triple window front ends. You can see another Class 37 playing 'tag' behind. I'm not a spotter, but do like trains!

thats some project, man. respect to all involved. I wish i'd known when it was at the weardale railway, i'd have gone for a squizz as its only 6 miles from me, and jizzy gillespie lives about 200 yards away from wolsingham station. like VIP, I like trains but don't spot 'em. heres a pic I took earlier in the year of the deltic at Locomotion in shildon.

VIP, thats a Class 40 (bigger brother) behind the Deltic, that has the humungoid V16 in it...... Tonycocacola - shame that, she was at the NRM Shildon for a year until Feb 2009 and as for the 'Wierd-ale'...... less said about that the better. Thanks to some genius planning, the main loco shed wasn't accessable from any roads without going through someone else's property, and when they had some stuff go missing.... I think you can work out the rest! Got the nickname 'HMP Wolsingham'.

haha I'm a fellow liker but not spotter. ;D Been somewhat obsessed with cold-start vids on youtube! Sound so sweet with the turbo whistle and irregular cold idle though heh. Also saw an English Electric of some sort (not clued up on which classes are which by sight) on the railway line while walking the dog, sounded freakin awesome in the valley! So please post pics and videos, very interested in the engineering in these ol' beasts

I seen the Top Gear episode that they raced across Japan in a GTR and a Bullet Train. Was on today on Dave. Thought the long nose on the Bullet train looked a bit Bozo style.

thats totally awesome!\\ out of interest how much does an old train set one back? Depends on what you want and what state its in. A Class 37, for example, in 'good' (ie reasonably unmolested by metal fairies) condition will be £15K+, possibly £20K. Then you have to find somewhere to put it, move it (£5K+) and get some spares, fuel and some bodies to assist and then hope it hasn't got any serious failings. Ours was a lot less but still cost the thick end of £10K to sort out and it still isn't done yet. A working one.... name your price....

its awesome that your doing this, thats is an incredible toy for £10k.
theres a stretch of branch line near where i was living about 5miles long. it has a derelict but saveable small victorian station on it on the outskirts of a small village with a bit of land which was a yard with engine sheds on.
the line is used a couple times a month by the powerstation to remove waste. i hope one day when the powerstation stops using the line to buy it up with the station, id live in the station and have a train like yours and just go backwards and forwards down the line with it. id make the yard how it was back in the day with sheds to keep my train and maybe a helicopter and austin ambassador in them.
thats one of my dreams.

This bit of thrashing would get the mpg down below that, about 700 ton trailing load and lots of digital driving..... oh, and 37003 in the background.

About time I updated this, isn't it! After spending last winter freezing my bits off, the team and I finally got the major repair we had to do finished, only for me to snap my Achilles tendon, hence 3 1/2 months in plaster which slowed things down a bit. Anyhoo, lots of graft later and we were able to get the old girl ready to take her place in the Class 37 50th Anniversary Event at Dereham in September, including a repaint into Civil Engineers grey/yellow livery. Here she is in the Cavalcade (6th one in with 00 00 in the headcodes....)
I'll post up some pics later....

Just found out how much the oil change will be today. £1500. I will repeat that, £1500! The filters were £48 each and there are four of the beggars!
