No please don't take anything off that. The properties of the metals will have changed due to the temperatures involved and the non controlled cooling that they will have been subjected to and you could not trust them not to fail. I know its hard but the car is a dead loss nothing can safely be removed and re-used. Thanks bl1300, but It was not my intention to use the part, but to use it as a template only. If I were to convert any rim to knock off I'd buy new spline adapters from KN. I have, after advice from you all, decided that no part is going to be reused as they were intended to be used because of the unknown fragility/strenght of them after the fire. It pains me of course, but safety always comes first or as a well known saying for MG enthusiasts says - Safety Fast! Must also admit that the consequences explained by some about the acidity/toxic after a fire has me worried as many of the tenants have been rummaging around in the ruins trying to save bits and bobs. Luckily I have only been to the site once to take photos. If I need to start moving things I will make sure to use my acid-proof gloves at least!

Looks like I will have to add Porsche 911 to my list.
How about a 914? Are they any good?

Just to add... Lancia Beta Montecarlo would be a pretty choice also! Maybe if I could find a rust free one? There was a rally nice one in RetroCars a few years back. If I remember correctly it had a Ferrari/Fiat Dino v6 in it?

BMW E24 - modify with M engine Porsche 944 Jaguar XJS - modify with XJR engine or just get a V12 one. Gn3dr - E24? Is that an early 5-series? Don't shot me for not knowing i know my 3-series, but not much else. Porsche 944 is certainly tempting. XJS is too big and heavy imo. Ahhhh looked into E24 and a big YES! that's the 6-series coupe. Really like those and they are within budget and can be modified with bigger stronger engines if I'd want to. A 635CSI can be had for that kind of money with some going spare for some customization

Thanks guys I will leave it alone then. However, is there no way of neutralize the acid? The only thing I'm looking to rescue for pattern purposes is my knock off wheel central splines which are steel bolted to the aluminium knock of rim. I'd like to keep them to check if they could be transplanted onto different rims to make them knock off. It's the central part of this rim

ettorebugatti - I like the FD better, but it's too new and thus too expensive here in Norway. Only Mercedes I really like is the E190, and preferably in 2,3 or 2,5 16V Oaksey - how hard would it be to convert a Scimitar to LHD? Nozza - that Eclat looks really nice, but I prefere the Excel. Any more suggestions?

Hmm I've got the original UK registration number, but I guess i won't get far with it as it was exported. The car is known to the Owners Club, but they cannot attest to the cars provenance as there is no favtory record of it. The car is sold as being a factory prototype, but no one can confirm it and without confirmation it wouldn't command the premium being asked. Is this a car you are interested in buying then ? If so why not ask current owner / seller to back up their claim of being a factory prototype to justify the asking price. After all you wouldn't buy a Picasso for a fortune just because somebody told you it was so same would apply to such a car. BTW What car is it as there might be a record at Gaydon who hold vast records. Paul H Yes its a car I'm looking into possibly purchasing

Yes its GRP I hear you on the hearsay bit. I'll do some more digging, but will certainly not pay over the odds. Only question is if the non original engine actually will decrease value if not confirmed done by the factory. Sorry for being vague, but would like to keep it for myself until I decide to buy or not

Andrewbaran - a 240z is certainly a nice car, but I've never really looked at them. What was the largest factory fitted engine in them? Composimmonite - jensen Healey is a bit too cruiser? Or am i wrong? Gn3dr - E24? Is that an early 5-series? Don't shot me for not knowing i know my 3-series, but not much else. Porsche 944 is certainly tempting. XJS is too big and heavy imo. Paul Y - can I get a decent 911 for that kind of money? Alolympic - I'd consider a P1800es, but it's hard to get approved with a larger engine in Norway. Hairnet - 911 would be cool, but what are the costs involved running one? American cars are almost certainly not an option for me. Simca 1000 coupe looks good and the Alpine would get me rear engine and some 70's cool. WillCarter - not too fond of Japanese cars, but that looks really cool, but I'm afraid it's too much of a project Joem83 - another one for the 911 ehhhh.... Hmmmmmmm, must start looking at them jules1200 - Fiat X1/9 fits the small and lightweight itch, but the Esprit is way cooler. how hard would it be to convert an Esprit from RHD to LHD? Plenty of rhd ones about, but lhd ones look to command a hefty premium. Thanks all for your suggestions. i must admit that looking and searching for a new car has kept my spirit up the last week. Keep em coming Especially cars that are easilly converted from rhd to lhd as the availability in the UK seem a lot larger and cheaper than the rest of europe.

TR7 with a V8 conversion (or a TR8 of course). You could get a stunning one with your budget. If you can live with the low rent dashboard inside (sorry Andy, just my thoughts!), they are actually a great driver's car in a sorted form. For a car with a live axle they have a surprisingly competent chassis, allowing them to be competitive in some circles (I know that in the Future Classis they were competitive but that the reliability was an issue). I have pondered over getting one now and again. The 944 may have to be removed from your list. It will be within budget, but the earliest one was made in 1985 with them being made until 1991. There was not an awful lot of them made either. If the dates are not a huge issue you should get a lovely example with change to spare for your budget. (the earlier cars came with an LSD and an arguably stronger engine block alone with deeper dished wheels (due to the suspension suiting an earlier offset) where the car later cars had more power (Turbo S had had 250 with this being filtered down into the later cars made after 1988(ish). As much as I love MGBs (and I do lament your loss) I reckon it is always good to try something out different . Never really liked neither the TR6/7/8 unfortunatly. I've got a lead for a Daimler V8 powered TVR Vixen S1. It's above budget, but one that I might stretch for. The MGB/Cs are probably too emotionally taxing to get considering the circumstances. BMW E30 M3 is probbaly to expensive and too new. A clean E30 with a larger engine can be spproved here in Norway based on a early Hartge version which had 300+BHP. Porsche 944 has always been a favorite of mine and they are getting reasonable here in Norway. Triumph GT6 is a possibilty, but what can be done (has to be done) to the rear suspension?

I'm looking for a new project as my MGB GT is no more.
I'm compailing a list of possible candidates. The requirements are:
RWD preferably 2 seater, but 2+2 and 4 seaters are also considered Possibilty to do engine swap to modern engine Manual transmission Lightweight if possible no more than £15.000 Has to be good running order at price Preferably or possible to convert to LHD Pre 1984 or very close(30 years old to avoid tax when importing to Norway)
Currently I have the following cars on my list:
Lotus Europa Lotus Esprit TVR Vixen S1 Caterham/Westfield Super7 Westfield X11 (might not fit price range?) Another MGB GT MGC GT or Roadster MGA MGB GT V8 Lotus Elise Lotus/caterham/westfield Super7 Lotus Esprit FIAT X1/9 Alfa Romeo GTV6 2.5 Fiat 600 Abarth Replica Renault Alpine BMW E30 BMW M3 Fiat 124 Coupe Ginetta G4 Reliant Scimitar Triumph TR4 Triumph TR5 Triumph TR3 Porsche 944 Turbo Triumph GT6 Matra Murena
So are there any other that I should consider?
Which car would you get and why?

You have to provide valid reason plus proof of address such as current utility bill, bank statement etc. I applied without the address documents and the application was refused. Paul h Think they will approve my foreign address?

I would like to trace a cars ownership in the UK, however the car in question was exported in 1982. What are my chances and where would I start my search?

Thanks Hairymel. I'm kind of torn about saving as much as I can and just letting it go. As you know it's not easy letting everything go due to someone elses mistake I would not want anything from the fire if it's not 100% safe so I'd better leave it be I guess. There might be a coil bracket or some other small bits that's not structural that can be saved, but then again I don't know if I can mentally start taking parts of the wreck.

My MGB GT was destroyed in a fire on Tuesday. That's 10 years of work and somewhere in between £20-25.000 down the drain. It's all burnt out, the chassis has bent across the axle stands and the aluminium head on the Zetec I was fitting has melted together with all the glass. So I understand that the heat has been tremendous. The car was going to be running Hoyles front suspension and classic conversion engineering 4-link rear end. The link bars in the rear has melted and the shocks and springs are all twisted. Most of the suspension arms and brackets look in okay shape, but is it advisable to rescue them or are they toast due to the heat they have been through? Here's the Hoyle front suspension that I am hoping to save
