Great thread. Why any one would want to change the factory colour is beyond me. Something that I have said many times myself. It's been 5 different colours in its life. I would love to get some more of the history of the car but I've lost contact with the p/o and I think he was glad that it was off his hands... because well... it was a neglected wreck destined for the scrap yard.🤣

Full respect to you for following your heart/dream - best of luck. Looks like you'll learn the correct way to do things learning from the folks doing your car as they've done a cracking job so far. Many years back I had an early 8v that was Tim Stiles' wife's car. White B reg with an 90's 16v interior. Great fun and eventually sold to a guy in ClubGTI to restore as his was stolen. Following this thread with interest. Thanks matey I appreciate it. It is true though and they were exactly my words (learning to do it the right way) this kind of work has a very steep learning curve, ive gone away with a headache some days because it was taking ages to get my cad templates just right. But it's all practice.

Changing career path is always nerve wrecking, especially when you decide to turn your hobby into your main profession. Having done that myself I can attest to the difference it makes in quality of life - not always in monetary terms, but simply by doing something that fulfills you and gives you something back. Don't forget, you spend (ideally, haven't done that for ages) a third of your day sleeping, and another third working. If you don't enjoy what you do, with all its up and downs, you'll spend most of your remaining third being miserable. Now, bring on more photos so we can give some constructive criticism . You know, for your own good and all. Thanks for the kind words and for the extra perspective piguin As promised here we are. Dare i say.. rust free? This is the fuel filler bracket which has rotted off 99% of mk2s ever. It's just your typical poor design flaw that is one of a few water/dirt ingress point. But it is also the last of the metal work (he says with bated breath).

Glad to hear you found solutions to your needs & those of the Gti project amid difficult times & job uncertainty, so hope they continue to be appropriate as events unfold. Cheers for the kind words 79cord  Aye no-one said life is a smooth ride. Everyone has testing times now and again. It's just how we react to them that's the tricky part. In a way I'm glad because it's given me chance to do something I've always wanted. Here's the finished engine bay.. yes it still needs paint but it is completely rust free.

Well I don't know where to begin really. This may seem long winded and appear like I'm derailing my own thread but I'll keep the waffling at the minimum... (Que the proverbial violens) I've worked as a unit manager in a care home for a while now.
I used to work days but dealing with families, hospitals, GPs and other specialists all day, chasing meds, having time for residents and staff for essentially curse word money and little support made me move to nights. Also witnessing how poorly the elderly are treated by the NHS first hand generally. However the longer I stayed the less I enjoyed it. Things came to a head when something happened at work that made me think 'yup that's enough of that'.
Wanting a change of career me and the gf etc talked it over and basically agreed cars/driving are the one passion thats never left me from being a kid so I set out plans on going back to college (again). If your not following your passions your wasting your time is something I've said often in the past so I might as well put my money where my mouth is.
I know the money wont be great and working on your car as a hobby and then doing it as a profession is completely different but any aspect of vehicle repair is a skill that i would love to have.
I'd rather do something I enjoy and get paid less than earn a financially comfortable living and be unhappy. Ive recently left my previous job and am about to start as a night manager in another home. I plan on going back to college next Sept. I can still work around college and earn a decent wage doing that.
What doea this have to do with the mk2 you ask? Well my knee-jerk reaction was that I'm going to have to shelve thw whole project. This is where it becomes a bit more interesting though. I've come to know the guys the company that's restoring my car quite well and discussing my work issues and talking about going into the industry, they have actually gave me a taste of what it's like. I have been working there under supervision this past week. Doing much of the basics of course. Ive learnt a lot already but barely scratched the surface but I have thoroughly enjoyed it.
Well I've got an update coming next week but then I'm going to be doing the work myself and just paying for materials and storage (minus the spray job). Metalwork is pretty much done so next I'll be seam sealing and treating the floor pan.
Also I'll be refurbing all the running gear etc. This is probably the best thing that could of happened next to them giving me a job. Doing it yourself is always more satisfying.
I was in two minds whether to share this but inspired by many other 'diary' style threads I thought why not.

I often wonder how my favourite builds from WD live on after they've been sold. Thanks for sharing and I'll look forward to see how 'musty' is evolving.
Unfortunate on the follower. Hope it's not too much of an expensive fix. Any future plans or just enjoying it and taking to shows?

Very good workspace. Quite envious. V5 is an interesting choice. I've never seen a v5 swap for a mk2 actually so it would be fairly unique.
1.8t is popular for a reason. Cheap enough, highly tuneable and lots of fun. Since yours is 1990 it will be running off the CE2 electrical system which is much more adaptable to mk3/mk4 engine swaps. There's a wealth of info related to this on clubgti.com. I have my own mk2 under a nut and bolt resto at the minute so I hope yours goes more smoothly than mine!

Well. This has been one of the most inspirational builds I have ever seen. Well it's become much more than just a 'build' really with everything that has happened in between. I've took loads of screenshots too because there are so many 'how-to' tips and tricks here as well.
I have to go and see this thing please don't forget to share the next time you take it to a show. The Morris story is so much better than anything I've seen on car sos haha. Let us know when you start your thread on the Morris too. Thanks for sharing.

Read from the beginning. Enjoyed every page. Here's to another 1,000,000 km! And I do fully agree about your comment regarding having a car restored and becoming disconnected from it and then being too afraid to drive it or being too anxious to enjoy it as it's a struggle I'm getting over at the minute! Thanks again for sharing this thoughtful thread.

Absolute quality pal. Just read the whole thing. Currently half way through my own mk2 rebuild and seeing threads like this really re-inspire me.
Wasn't made up with colour choice at first but the more I looked the more It grew on me. You should transplant this thread on the mk2 owners club site. Loads of helpful advice on there as well as just good banter etc.

We'll this has been an absolute joy to read johnrh. I was intentionally seeking out 240 build threads on RR as I was after either a 240/740 or a Saab 900 as a retro daily (had the itch a while now) while my Mk2 golf is still a long way off being completed.
But after reading through your thread it has definitely swung it for me. You have a talent I'll say that much and I hope your buisness has taken off. There's just a charm about the 240/5 that I don't find on other cars. It's practicality/safety and reliability makes it a perfect candidate for a daily too. How many miles have you put on it since it's been back on the road after it's initial rebuild?

Great story mate just read the whole thing too. Looks like the best is yet to come. Don't forget to keep us updated. I'm after buying a 900 (had the itch a while now) or a volvo 240 to tie me over till my mk2 golf is finished.

Great car mate. Deffo gave it a new lease of life, What mileage is it on now? 72k is nothing for these engines they are pretty bullet proof. Brilliant mpg as well. I'll be looking for a mk3 soon to tie me over till my mk2 is done so good inspiration. Cheers. Bookmarked.

We'll it's took me a few days here and there but I've just read the entire thread. And now I'm having visions of this 'Volvano' 😉 showing Porsche GT3's up at the nurburgring.
You have a gift young sir and if your ever looking for an apprentice to teach the dark side for the force to, give us a call. Seriously though have you done anything remotely this extensive before? What's the future plans for this?
