Ok not a lot done, sorting out the garage and moving stuff into the shed, baby duties and other boring life stuff taking up time. When I did get started on it I ran into two issues that ate up half a day. One: with the inner tailgate seal fitted the tailgate lock wouldn't engage, I've tried raising and lowering the the tailgate but to no avail. So I'll have to see whats happening with the lock. Next, the damn UJ boot. I tried to install one with the engine out but I was sold a LH boot. Now I bought a RH aftermarket one VW Heritage, I loosened the bolts on the rack so the UJ could engage with the rack spline. But could I get that boot over the cup, personally I don't think any amount persuasion will get it over. After asking Rubjohnny he said early and later racks didnt have the cups, instead I needed a rubber seal instead of the cup. Part no. 171419329A - £12.94 from VW Honestly I still have yet to find an example of how early manual racks (pre-87) are different so if anyone knows anything give us a shout. Also fitted the main fuel pump assembly, I need to drop the tank a bit to fit the lift pump and lines. I've also found that off cuts of Ranger Rover Evoque door seals make great door protectors.

Since the cars return I've done next to nothing, swapped over the bonnet seal and a few other bits but thats all. Time being the primary factor as per usual. I have also been building a new shed in the back yard as I have gathered a multitude of different tools and parts since starting this build there is no room for anything anymore plus my missus keeps sh*t machines (rabbits.. Not mk1 allegros) too so there is a lot of stuff knocking around. I've just spent a couple of hundred quid on the last remaining parts that i need to properly put everything together on this car though. My missus is buying me 2.25'' trackslag exhaust system for my birthday :-) and that will be the last piece of the puzzle. I'll start updating this regularly every sunday unless something significant happens like the first engine start. Oh yes I filmed a very basic and poor (why i never shared it at the time!) walk around video of my car when it was in the storage unit in the depths of winter at around 23:30 at night. I do look back on them times of working on the car there with rose tinted glasses I must say. But its good to see a video format from what it looked like then to how it does now.

You've nailed the underside bud, you've been far more thorough thst I have with the doing it body colour and I fully understand and sympathise what its like to remove underseal on your back and cope with delays from bodyshops. Bet you can't wait to get her back and start reassembly.

Thanks again guys, its motivating especially now I've realised how much there is still to do. The work is something I will enjoy now however what is causing an issue is how disorganised ive been. Parts for this car have been scattered across 3 houses and 2 bodyshops in the three years its been off the road. So before I fit a single part I'm going to organise everything into their respective categories. Oh I have to say the paint job is good but it is truely epic in the sunlight. I just sat on the wall admiring it for a good 10 mins this afternoon, just thinking 'Finally!'

Thanks for that mate, I'll no doubt be thinking of him when that engine first fires. And she's home, dropped off at 21.30 last night. Helped the guys fit the window regs and sunroof, missing a few bits from the sunroof but I can finally work on it now. Its only now shes back I'm reminded how much their is to do and how little time I've really got! :rotate: And if you needed reminding what she looked like before.. Same car, same location, but a bit of difference ..

Thanks again guys. Yep can't wait for her to come home. The glass fitters let us down as they had an issue on another job so I didnt get to go up yesterday. It'll be back this week though.
Regarding the taillights yes you're right that this era of mk2 (pre 89) would have had non tinted lights however for me i love the look of these much more however I do still have the original clusters so I can do some comparison shots when shes home.
When looking at the above picture i was reminded of something, The lower rear valance (repro) is non gti so I need to cut out the extra recess to allow for twin exhausts pipes. Totally forgot about it.

Thanks again guys, i can see the finishing line now. Its going to be an emotional moment the first time that engine starts. Glass fitters are arriving this afternoon. Finally got to see her in paint in person today. Safe to say they have nailed it. Going up tomorrow morning to help the guys with reassembly. Going to look loads better just with the refurbished RA's on too. Cant wait.

Over the moon mate it's like getting that Christmas morning feeling back when you were a kid. It's been a welcome distraction as all I've done is work lately, today is my 18th shift in a row!
Not necessarily to pay for the respray. I'm currently on a temp-to-perm contract at JLR in Halewood and there's desings for the plant to go to two shifts (currently on three mornings, lates, nights). If that happens everyone on a temp contract will be let go. So I'm putting away what I can.
You've probably all seen news clips/articles about the company struggling. Rumours will kill you if you let them in this place lol.

Dannnng that looks great! Well done mate, you've worked damn hard to get this stage! When are you getting it back for assembly? Could be as soon as this weekend, but most likely next weekend. Then it's finding the time to put it back together!

Yeh it was daft as I believed it would only be an issue on flat panels. I.e bonnet or roof but you live and learn. Bodywork is not my strong suit (goes without saying) I'm sure some people reading are thinking.. 'idiot' but the person who never made a mistake never learnt anything I suppose.
Anyway.. He's asked me to drive up tomorrow. *crosses fingers*

Sorry for the lack of update. There were some 11th hour things he wasn't happy with. But that was a week ago. But I've been on to him and I do genuinely believe that he wants to make this paint job as good as he can make it.
The delay is also partly my fault. When I removed the filler and etch primer I used a scotchbrite disc which has slightly warped the certain areas of the panels. Thought I could get away with it because I used light pressure but it has added more work onto the build. Price remains fixed though according to the painter.
