6mm marine ply sheets wedged in the van.. Very fortunately there is a friendly joiner two doors down who loves cars... has a pretty sweet V8 Merc on air at the moment... he popped in on a Saturday to chop this for me! Both locker backs, bases and sides knocked out, here's the small one on the drivers side between the cab and diesel tank. Spent an seemingly endless amount of time grinding back welds and cleaning all the steel I hadn't fully bare metalled before welding it in. The closure plate for the back of the wheel well to weld in tomorrow and then I'm pretty sure that's all the welding done and time to straighten out the rear wing on that side. The tack had sprung on this side when I ground back a neighbouring piece... whoops... so ratchet strapped it back in place and welded it fully in... Two days left to work on this before I am out of country (pretty much until RRG)... PRESSURE IS ON! Still one more locker door to trial hang and fit, the diffuser and locker insides to laminate in carbon kevlar, the passenger side rear wing to straighten out/fill etc and then preparing for the exterior paint... (which might be done the day before RRG at this rate..)...

I think that's going to look fantastic, considering how good it looks already! Also quite amused by the French brand treachery going on, a Renault hauling a Citroen?? Bof I did almost buy a 6 wheeled Citroen C25 but it was a rotten old Citroen dinosaur that had done 500,000 miles and was utterly utterly shagged! Also... Renault Master Mk1 styling over C25 anyway I think.. iconic in that period, at least in my frazzled mind.

Excellent job, what is the mastic paint? Hi, The mastic paint is from Rustbuster.co.uk The paint I am using is their EM1-2-1 Mastic. I am really impressed with it, easy to mix up, easy to apply and cures really nice. I have used some without the thinners as a filler for some pitted antiroll bar brackets. A few questions... What pressure were you using on your gun? 1.8 tip? How much did you thin it by? Looking at doing similar and using the same paint system on the Renault Master side lockers... thanks!

Wonder if a G9U out of a later Trafic would go in. Would haul well then, they're a stonking engine. It is the original type S9U in here, 100% mechanical, no electronics at all, which I like very much... but you're right, does need more stonk.. Interesting history on the S9U, this 2.5L version was already the third displacement change for it and it went on to be enlarged twice more up to 3.0L. This one uses the 8140.07 version that makes a whole 76hp at 4000rpm and Renault used on the early models of Messenger, Master and Trafic. Used in all sorts including up to 2005 on the Fiat Ducato and 2004 on the Iveco Daily.. and still in production right now for FPT - Fiat Power Train as a marine engine.. The thing I would like to know is was there a compression ratio change between the NA and turbo 2.5L motors and if so, by how much..

Also some news on possibly finding the dealer that sold it, the VG suffix on the plate points it to the Norwich DVLA office, the Renault dealer there is now known as Holden Renault but back then was Reliance Garage. I've found this mock up of a dealer sticker on a chaps R5 rebuild on Pistonheads but now I need to find someone with some original plates from the 1990's so I can get the logo and details copied and then reproduced by Retro Plates.. (check out instagram for them).

So how about loading the 2cv on flat ground... Step 1, let all the air out of the rear bags.. Step 2, add sand ladders and crucial blocks of wood to stop shock mounts digging into the bed at the ramp angle change where it goes from ramp to flat. Step 3, start winching in - this is how close the bumper gets at the front before the tyres start drawing up the ramps.. and the same at the rear... Step 4, strap down then load car with racing gear and liquimoly swag to give out at Goodwood Retro Rides. And arriving at Goodwood after it's first long run loaded with the 2cv. It was a 6 hour drive for me to get there as I drove to Tiverton to pick up Alice then up the A303, we stopped at Winchester at 3pm to pick up a coat she had left at a friends there before getting stuck in school traffic trying to make our way out onto the M23.. at this point in the middle of traffic in the middle of Winchester I realise that A. the radiator fans aren't working and it is the hottest day of the year so far, B. the clutch is going. We whacked up the heater in the cab to maximum heat and maximum on, wound down the windows and melted into a sweaty puddle in our seats as I changed gear matching revs with limited clutch from there until 30 mins the other side of Goodwood where my folks and grandparents are based. The next day checking the clutch I found that the adjuster nuts on the cable had wound themselves right out so that was an easy fix before we headed off to Goodwood! The rad fans though I will have to delve further into the sensors and wiring, there should be two speed settings that they should automatically come on to at certain temps, once moving or with the cab heater on though there was no problem. The 2.5 NA diesel is a torque monster but again the 'box isn't setup for speed, I do know that changing to a turbo model box would help in this respect and I think I have found one en-route to Shelsley so may look to pick that up on the way to Retro Rides in late August. At the moment I am just topping up the leaky gearbox and putting cardboard under it when I leave it in the warehouse or stopping over anywhere. The great thing about this truck though is that 2.5 NA diesel, it is 10,000 miles old after either a new engine or a complete and very good rebuild (I can't tell) and it is very sweet, uses zero oil and although it would be nice to have more power I don't think I want to pull it all apart.. not right now anyway.. Right now I am trying to find out a little more history on the truck, nothing came with it bar the current V5 and MOT but I am lead to believe it was originally used on Heathrow for 200,000 of it's 223,000 mile life. If it was kept in a hanger etc then this makes sense for its relatively great condition, and how it has been looked after so well mechanically. I think the blue and silver paint scheme may tie in to this theory too.. can I check out the history of where it has been somehow? Also I'd love some original dealer plates to be reproduced for it - so how would I find out who sold it?
