Oi! Steve & Dez – keep up at the back there – see my post on page 1! ...I would recommend the OP get this sorted before trying to make any changes to the car's spec, it's less likely to attract attention from the modified car Gestapo that way... Steve for chrissakes don't tell them you don't know the VIN! fill in the form to get a replacement v5 with the green slip, wait for it to come through, it will have the VIN on it, make up a new plate and fit it. then worry about the engine swap. telling the dvla you don't know your vin is very very bad, you'll loose the cars ID and then they'll tell you to iva it as you cant prove its age.

I need a new logbook anyway. Never received one from when I bought the car, but do have the little green slip to prove I'd signed stuff I also need a VIN number for the car as the plate has come off at some point in its life So if send off for a new log book, with a cover letter explaining I need a (new) VIN and that I've swapped the engine for a same cc newer one for reliability, then all should be good as the car is 1975 Do I mention the turbo, or leave that technicality out? Okay, the fact that you don't actually have a V5C is a game changer. Do one thing at a time! 1) Send off the green slip to get your new V5C - do nothing else. 2) When you get your V5C through in your name, then send the V5C to them to inform them of the engine number and capacity change. You don't need to mention the turbo, it's not relevant, and certainly don't mention the missing vin plate. Your car won't be Historic tax yet so you will need to send a covering letter - if your local garage or MoT station can write a note confirming the change from engine X capacity 2 to engine Y capacity 3 then so much the better. The advice given before about scanning or photocopying the V5C so you have a copy of what you've sent still holds. Never give the DVLA any more info that they ask for. The people who work there aren't dumb, it just that they are only trained to deal with the stuff they are dealing with and no more. They don't have the information to think outside the box. And, as we know, a little knowledge can be dangerous!

If the car is in the historic tax class already you don't need to send them anything but the new engine number and cc. Whichever moron at DVLA deals with it may not know this (they rarely know their own rules) so a covering letter is a good idea This - absolutely! Scan or photocopy your V5C before you send it off to DVLA and send it to be signed for (they can lose anything).

It sure is. Had one as a daily about 30 years ago, another one I shouldn't have sold!

Got some vague memory that many years ago (25+ probably) they used to issue a specific set for temporary imports to the UK (think it was in the format QQ0000) but I've never heard of temporary plates in the way that the Germans use them.

I think the fact that no one knows anyone who has received these letters sums it up, its always 'I heard from someone else' stories. There's a whole thread on Rods & Sods about one guy who has "come out" having been asked to complete the form / send pictures after changing his car from PLG to Historic... www.rodsnsods.co.uk/forum/topic/how-get-pro-street-pop-through-biva-405393I know of at least one more but as they haven't "outed" themselves, I feel it's not up to me to do if for them.

Russman – in your situation, your best bet would be to PM Kapri over on the Rods & Sods site as he will be able to explain all the implications you face with your new purchase. He has a LOT of years experience of dealing with the DVLA at high level and will be able to point you in the right direction. Just tell them nil mods, done! That’s all very well but the problem is that along with just filling in the form, the DVLA want photos of the vehicle too. The DVLA sending out v627/1 (source of parts/mods) forms as a matter of course on the PLG / Historic changeover started in earnest in December last year, so all those respondents on here who sent paperwork in “a while ago” are lucky not to have been affected.

The DVLA seem to be sending out v627/1 (source of parts/mods) forms as a matter of course now on the PLG/Historic changeover; I've heard of several cases.
Just how modified is the car?

Those things are more fun than a barrel of monkeys! We have a 2001 Aixam 500SL - powered by a 500cc Kubota diesel driving through a CVT style autobox (just forward, neutral and reverse) - sounds like a dumper truck but handles like a go-kart. Two-door hatchback which is a full four seater with a small luggage area. It'll only do 45mph flat out but it's ideal for around town (park it anywhere as it's 6-inches shorter than a proper mini) and does around 75mpg too. Used as our shopping car and Mrs G uses it for work as well.

Do you rent the parking space as well as the garage? Might be worth enquiring on the Speed, Plod and the Law section on Pistonheads - lots of proper legal bods there that might be able to help.

AWESOME is a very, very much overused word.
This thread however really does deserve that title - in fact when you look the word up in the Oxford English Dictionary, all they would need as a definition would be a hyperlink to page one of this thread!
