I keep wondering about using ‘corn head grease’ also known as one shot swivel grease in LR circles on the leaky steering box for the same reason. It’s designed to go stiff until subjected to some shear forces (oo-er) so stay in places where the seals have gone but still lubricate when things start moving. As you say any lubrication is a bonus ! Nice progress on some of the fiddly stuff. James

Proper job that, you’ll know in 10 years time if it worked ! Keep your eye out for people converting old wheelchair equipped mini buses for tie down stuff. We have some seats with integral seat belts and some inertia ratchet straps that clip into this rail from this source waiting to be put in the LR. Some removable seats brat style would be really amusing. James

Balls, that something you don't need. If you are anything like me it's not just the time and money it's the frustration caused by somebody else you have paid over hard earned to doing a crappy job and not be able to do anything about it. Any thoughts on what's going wrong with the pump ? Diesel pump rebuilds really do seam to give lots of issues in the LR world. Guy who bought our old petrol engine was swapping out a diesel that wouldn't work properly after a new pump etc. At least you have the spare engine already sorted, hope that works out OK. James

Am I sad that I’d rather have the survivor pick up ? Driver of the VW looked like she was working hard, wide wide tyres probably no PAS and lows might not be the easiest ! Sounded sweet though. James

Looked at some led options for the LR but the cheap ones as you say are directional so wouldn’t work from the side and I found them brighter on tail lights and then not enough % differential on the brakes. Have worked well on the trailer when I swapped the brake and fog cables over but no luck so far for the LR. At least they are eye height on that, but it has such strong engine transmission braking that you can drive almost without braking but it definitely catches people out behind. Good thing they don’t often get too close because of the smell of unburnt hydrocarbons… Led on the new light might help its interesting how much more quickly the led ones light up. James

You going to put an olive or something on the stainless pipe to help with flexi attachment ? Used 15mm copper pipe for some of the LR (110 2.3 petrol into a series needs some different plumbing) and ended up adding 1/2 of a yorkshire 15mm joiner to create a swage to help but also considered adding olives but would have lost one compression nut per pipe. (hope that makes sense ?) Anyway bodging together very nicely sir. James

Ouch ! That looks like it would have smarted. Swearing does help - its been clinically proven to help reduce pain. Hope the covid jab goes OK for you. I was a bit tired and achy at the end of the day so took some nurofen and went to bed - but that's pretty normal round here as the clock ticks up ! James

Rear overhang on that must make right turns in particular interesting - perfect for sideswiping bikes undertaking. When I was delivering for a living had one lorry with that sort of overhang and you had to be extra careful. Easy enough to place on the road even though LHD ? Visibility looks good forward at least... Nice job, must look the complete daddy in a campsite. Please tell us you have some good 70's deckchairs etc. James

Couple of long coach bolts and you're golden ! Liking the reversing and fog light install, hidden and period, going to whack in some led bulbs as well ? Not having a reversing light can be a PITA as people can't 'read' what you are doing or I don't know pay attention without obvious lights. Still people tend to give very scabby land rovers a wide berth in supermarket car parks anyway... Going to be a very nice car when done. James

I love the tyre/arch fit before you raised it - looks perfect from a visual point of view. Lows and rims on an XK 120 ? There would be foaming at the mouth in the owners club ! Anyway, lovely work, thanks for the updates. James

I like the grille cos it annoys people 😬 Everyone’s always asking if I’m gunna straighten those two bent ones. I like messing with people’s OCD. I do have one of the two missing bars to reattach though, and there will be some things mounted to the front bumper too so it will be a bit less noticeable. Well I love it! Are you wrapping the bumper in old rope 😉 It’s not an old Land Rover so not allowed to do that 🙄 Love the personal vision to say nah that’s how I want it - looks ace. James

That is looking quite fantastic - especially in the engine bay - cap doffed. Have always loved these after one basically drifted round me on a big rounderbout (bottom of the M10 for those in the UK) in my hard driven mini - was a lesson in car control and who was the daddy for sure. If anything like here the effort has been self funding in the value increase as well so a double win. As per your plan the Euro bumpers at some point will really set it off. James

Key difference I think you talk about is being taught to drive rather than taught to pass the test and point a car. Get what you say about learning in an old car completely. Boys will be learning in the LR in the field - if they can drive they can drive anything- and also bad habits like turning steering wheel when stationary and just slamming on the brakes and letting the ABS sort it all out won't work. Reading the road and other vehicles is something that Tesla et al are struggling with and people are surprisingly good at if they concentrate, again something you learn through experience. But dictating an update to your 'media whilst on the move would now be a priority these days ! Another thing that is really good is a skid pan course, knowing how cars behave when it goes a bit pete tong is good to know and kids pick up this sort of stuff so quickly. Enjoy the teaching. James
