Hi all got a few more hours in on the Vito. Had a bit of a nightmare getting the diesel heater out. It had been fitted using lots of seam sealant so even with the bolts removed it would not come out without a fight. Once the heater was out I could get the ply floor up. The previous converter had made no attempt to clean out the van before converting it as the is a mass of soil, sand, old screws and other rubbish under the floor. The next job is the fully de-rust the rear panel where the boot latch sits and assess whether its going to need welding up as its really quite thin. Cheers - mike

Hi all, I started a re-build on a Mercedes Vito camper yesterday. First job is to strip out the current interior and clean and assess the van. Things started of poor and got worse. All of the tie downs were seized and corroded and put up a real fight. Once these were done it was time to sort out the rear hatch latch as it was badly corroded. This is a common problem on vitos and this one is pretty bad. The latch is toast and the bolts holding it down looked like something off the Titanic. It to a couple of hours to get it all apart. The rear panel were it sits is heavily corroded and will need repair before I can install a new striker plate. With a bit of luck I should have this sorted later today. Cheers - mike

hi all have just about finished this one, the 240v system is in and ready to go. I have made and fitted the front ceiling and have the rear one made ready for fitting tomorrow once I have trimmed the upper rear part on the roof. The leisure battery needs screwing down and connecting and then the lights can be connected. I'm off to Antigua on Fri so finished just in time. Cheers - mike

hi all, have been steadily working through this. The 12v split charge system is in and working and the insulation and ply floor are fitted. I bonded the insulation onto the ply floor before fitting and then screwed through it. Tomorrow should see me carpet lining the rear arches and front step before cutting and fitting the altro flooring. Cheers - mike

I don't mean this sarcastically, (I'm saying that because I don't know what your every day employment is,) but that is a beautiful job that looks completely professional, The standard of your work is first class, Nigel Hi there thanks for the compliment. I have been building campers for over thirty years on and off and enjoy the challenge. I worked as an operations planner for 30 years but retired at 50 due to poor health so now just potter about building and renovating campers and motorhomes. Cheers - mike

hi all got back onto this yesterday. I made and fitted the kitchen worktop and did the final fit of the kitchen. Spent most of this morning wiring up the 12v system so that's now finished. I have got a rescue mission to go on later so that's it for today. Tomorrow should see the 240v system fitted and checked and the wardrobe fitted. Cheers - mike

Hi all, have had a steady week on the camper. She's starting to come together now and the end is in sight. All the units are made apart from the wardrobe front panel and I have started the final fit out. I spent most of wednesday taking 75mm out of the height of the seat as there was virtually no head room, its better now but still snug. I'm away later for a week on my boat so no updates for a while. Cheers - mike

hi there
I make all the units myself. Most of the kits you can buy are poor quality and need profiling to suit.

Hi all I started a camper build on a Htundai i800 earlier this week. Its the first one of these and is quite different to the other vehicles I convert as its rear wheel drive. So far I have removed all the rear seats and stripped out the flooring. Removing the seats was a real nightmare as the bolts holding them dowm protrude throught the floor so were really rusted plus the heads are really soft so round off as soon as you put any torque on them. The new ply floor and flooring are down, the rock and roll bed has been trial fitted and I have started making the units. The rock and roll bed is going to need modifying as there's not enough head room to sit in it due to the high floor. Cheers - mike
