hi there
I've had lots of these over the years and they are decent vans. There's still quite a few about and spares are still available apart from gearbox parts.
The shift linkage wears badly and the synchros fail.
Petrols are ok, not bad on fuel. Diesels are more problematic, they come in 1.9, 2.5 and 2.5 turbo, both fiat and peugeot engines. The 1.9 is ok for a van but not for the coach builts, the fiat 2.5 diesel is better that the peugeot .
I have service manuals on cd and a owners handbook/service manual for these if you are stuck.

A nice bus, I have converted lots of different vehicles over the years and these Toyotas are probably the best to drive.

Hi all, last week I picked up a 1999 Toyota Granvia 3.0 turbo diesel, 2 wheel drive. She was imorted in 2011 and has had 2 owners since. She's very sound having covered just 40k since import and 60k in japan. So far I have given her a deep clean and changed the cambelt, a one hour job, plus I have fitted a modern hi-fi. She's going to have a camper unit fitted, either a removable one in the rear or permanent one behind the drivers seat, not sure yet. Cheers - mike

hi all have been plodding on with this whilst dodging the wind and rain. The rear seating / bed is now complete. The diesel heater just needs the fuel and electrics connecting. I have had to change all the outlet vents as it was a stand alone unit not a built in. The kitchen unit is now made and this afternoon should see it fully fitted. I'm hoping to get the final electrics done tomorrow if it doesn't rain so all in all she's nearly done. Monday should see her tested, valeted and away. Cheers - mike

Hi all have been working my way through this over the last few days. I have started fitting a diesel heater, it came as a stand alone heater so I have had to strip it all down so that I can fit it. I have extended the controller wiring and mounted the heater on the floor but the heater didn't come with any outlet vents so have had to order them. I have finished the ceiling and boxed in the over cab storage area. Most of the units are now made, just one to make for the toilet. I cant do the final fit yet as my supplier of knock in trim has let me down, it was due last weds/thurs and on chasing it up today I found out they are out of stock until 21st so have had to order elsewhere. Tomorrow should see all the electrics connected up, 12volt and mains and hopefully the get the toilet unit and the bed boards made. Cheers - mike

Hi all have had a full day on this today and have been working on the ceiling. All the boards are made and the three rear ones have been fitted along with the lights. The front one needs some finessing before I can fit it. I also have to make a closing panel for the front over cab cupboard. I have also connected up the led lights which gave me a bit of bother to start with. As soon as I connected then they came on dim even when turned off and when I turned them on the fuse blew. I suspected that a wire had been caught by a screw or when drilling but everything checked out ok. After a bit more checking I found that one of the new switches was faulty. As soon as I replaced it all was good. I also unpacked the new upholstery and checked it and all seems good. Tomorrow should see the ceiling finished along with the over cab cupboard and I should have time to go and collect the furniture board. Cheers - mike

Hi all got the ply floor up today and removed a huge amount of curse word. Lots of the screws refused to com out which was great but managed to get it all back down and level. Whoever put the ply floor down had left the tie down eyes bolted to the floor which was causing all sorts of bumps and ridges. Spent a couple of hours over picking up the upholstery which is a much better colour. And finally, after I got the new flooring down so tomorrow I should be able to start getting the ceiling up. Cheers - mike

Hi all got a few hours on this today the passenger side rear is now carpet lined and I have made the c post trims. Got the sliding door one fitted along with the light switches. Tomorrow morning should see the ply floor removed and refitted, there's a damaged part to replace and the fit could be better. Once that's done the flooring can go down. Cheers - mike

Hi all
not the best of days today,
Went to the upholsterers to collect the rear seating and what a balls up, I asked for plain mid grey or thereabouts and arrived to find them done in blue! Looked good but not what I ordered, I think they have mixed up the order. They are being redone over the weekend.
Got an hour on the electrics and since then we have had torrential downpours so not a lot done this afternoon other than tidying the garage.
Cheers - mike

yes, the lining carpet is one of the "quick" improvement jobs. It gives an instant result.

Hi all had another steady day on this. Got the battery to battery charger and the consumer unit mounted and fitted most of the end terminals to the 12v system. The drivers side rear and front are now carpet lined, the front will be trimmed once I get the kitchen unit installed and there will be a cover trim over the join. Tomorrow should see the passenger side carpet lined. and maybe the electrics finished. I have to go over to Pontefract to collect the upholstery for the rear seat/bed and Doncaster to collect some ply for the roof lining. Cheers - mike

Hi all I had a steady day on this yesterday and got quite a bit done. When I got up yesterday morning the passenger side of the van was soaking wet and on checking there was an inch gap at the top rear of the sliding door so water was pouring in. I spent a couple pf hours sorting it out. I tries all the usual adjustments but could not get the door to open properly or fit at the top so made a jig to measure the front of the door compared to the rear of the door. The rear was a much flatter profile than the front, I have seen this before on well used vans, years of slamming the door basically changes its shape. I had to resort to some pretty heavy handed tactics to persuade the door back into the proper shape. Got up this morning and the van was dry so looks to be sorted. I removed all the rear ply lining so that I could insulate and then refit / finesse the fit. This morning I did the first fix on the wiring, running cable for the lighting, switched and the rear 12v / usb outlets. This afternoon should see the ply lining finessed and re-installed. Cheers - mike

Hi all I have just started a camper conversion on a Renault Master Spent the first few hours sorting through the wiring at the rear of the van removing non standard wiring and doing some tidying. Made a couple of closing panels for the rear pillars which both include a 12v and usb outlet. Cleaned up the rear doors and started on making the trim panels and lastly, cleaned up the roof and fitted some insulation. Tomorrow will see the first fix wiring and remove the ply lining from the side of the van, ready for insulation. Cheers - mike

hi all
I managed to grab a few minutes on the ldv earlier.
Getting the gear lever out was a doddle but bending it is near impossible. I have a gas blow lamp and have heated it up but cant get it hot enough to bed. I will have to pop to the local garage next week and get them to do it.
I did manage to take her out for a quick run and I can get her into fifth. Its a bit useless below 45-50 mph and the slightest hill has you changing down but when she's in fifth she is much quieter.
I'm currently looking at options for upgrading here to a 1.9 turbo.
Cheers - mike

Hi all
I fired the ldv up earlier and she ran fine. I was told by the previous owner that she was four speed and indeed the gear lever only shows 4 plus reverse but whilst I was on holiday I was chatting online to a chap with a similar van who insisted that they were all 5 speed so I had to check and low and behold she is. The only issue is you can only get it into fifth when the drivers seat is all the way back as it fouls the gear lever. Sometime tomorrow when I have a minute I'm going to pop the gear lever out and bend it slightly to the passenger side to give more clearance.
Cheers - mike

Hi all
just back from my trip, nearly 1000 miles in a week and she didn't miss a beat and returned over 40mpg.
There are however a few things to attend to, the brakes squeal really bad at anything under 15mph as you come to a stop.
The handbrake is ok but on some of the steeper hills it didn't want to hold the car so that needs to come apart and get checked.
And finally, I think its time to upgrade the cd player to something more modern as most of my cd's are scratched and don't play well.
Cheers - mike

Hi all I dug my slk out of storage on sunday and have spent the last few days getting her ready for a trip down to torquay. I have not had to do much to her, a new battery, oil,air and oil filter and a few off bits of fettling. Spent most of the day today giving her a good clean. She's only done 93k and is in pretty good nick. I am always surprised at how well she drives, very smooth but quick when required.

If you don't mind me asking, given your obvious skills at building camper van interiors, why did you choose to buy a ready made camper this time? hi there I buy all kinds of campers, some factory conversions, some part done amateur ones and just vans that need full conversion. They all offer different challenges but the one essential is that they offer an opportunity for making a profit. The time of year the market gets a bit frenzied so I often buy a few to just renovate and flip. I don't post all of my builds as some customers like to keep their builds private. Cheers - mike

Hi all nothing done on the LDV today as I have had a customers vehicle here all day for a kitchen unit to be made and fitted along with fitting the hob. I also made some closing panels for the sofa/bed. I should have a few hours on the LDV tomorrow as there are a few outstanding jobs. The coolant needs changing along with a good flush. The front indicators are intermittent as the connectors are all a but crusty. The gearbox and rear axle oil levels need checking. The kingpins need greasing and the front brakes need checking. The last job is to look at the exhaust as its rubbing against the rear brake compensator spring. After that she's good to go. I'm hopefully going over to Barnsley in her for a spot of fly fishing tomorrow evening so will stock the fridge with a few beers and snacks. Cheers - mike
