Having inpure thoughts about one of these...cheap enough, quirky, mid engined RWD Mercedes... I'm not a proud man. Me too. It’s the car I keep returning to on eBay searches. Once the XR2 goes it’ll be replaced by the best Brabus I can find. Lottery car? Has to be the E30 M3 though a nice 325i would also fit the bill

I had a 114Gta and I have always said how good a car it was. Plenty of poke, great driving position and very good on fuel. I keep showing the wife pictures and hinting that one would make a great commuter car but she just raises her eyebrows at me I carted my windsurfing kit around on the roof and even slept in it a couple of times. Definitely gets my vote.

single beds, so no need for a "The vans a rockin, so don't come a knockin" sticker...... Ha, well on the odd occasion It'll be a U shaped bench area that can be made into a full size bed using the table, but wanted to keep a walkway in the middle with drawers under the benches. Otherwise I'd just chuck a double mattress in and be done with it!!

That will certainly be more comfortable, I've seen others with a sloping lower back where the bottom of the door hinges down and forms a flight of 2 or 3 steps. I hope so Yep, I've seen that and will have a play when I get to that stage. I have an old caravan door for the frame hence the current design but I'll have a play as I go along.

Pretty happy with that. Then into the back. It's the summer 2020 version and is already on the way to being the 2021 version....... Again, we were camping so it's a bit chocker! It all worked, cooker was fine and cool box worked a treat when it was plugged into the mains (there's a Go Camping hook up kit on the front of the unit and accessible from behind the drivers seat) It works as a long weekend camper, but i'm not getting any younger and I'd like something better for the back. Cardboard aided design coming up!

First off, I hate hate hate IT and downloading photos is driving me nuts!! (Like worse than the Photobucket debacle ) So, I'm going to throw some words down and then try and download and upload some pictures from my phone and then onto my computer! Where was I? Probably mucking about with the interior. So the bit between the seats went OK and the cup holders work a treat (tested on the latest road trip, which I'll tell you all about later!) The bass box is less than satisfactory and rattles; I guess the clue is in the title and it should probably go under the drivers seat Which is where it'll end up. One day So happy with that and a bit more carpeting, and we'll call that bit done (well, Pete done which is the standard I work to!!) I've long wanted to do something with the dash. The clock lighting was curse word, the heater controls were rubbish, the stereo looked gash and the sun shone off the dash into my eyes! So it came out again! Again, it's Pete standard, but 95% how I wanted it and it works (so far!) I added some writing to personalise it and added some skateboard tape so SWMBO can put her feet on the dash board when we're out and about! I also added a Campervan Culture backlit kit for the clocks and a suede infill for the dash. It looks great in my eyes so job done! Then the door cards. Again I'd had a vision for the door cards for years, based on the way classic vans and trucks have painted doors. So armed with some 4mm composite sheet (aluminium skinned and easy to cut and bend, and bought for the camper pod, coming to a forum near you soon!) I set about making templates and armed with riv nuts and stainless fittings they were painted and lined up. A decent speaker set up was fitted (with some neat speaker rings) and bar a couple of little 'issues' I'm very chuffed with how they've turned out. Oh and the heated seats work. It's now a very comfortable place to be. Thanks for reading my ramble!! Now. lets see if I can upload some photos!!

Thought I ought to check out the van after messaging! I love it. Stance is spot on with the D-90's as well. They are a labour, but kind of addictive!

Ok, this might take a while! So, ignore most of what I said up there. And in no particular order! I gave up trying to fit the sub and bought an under seat subwoofer instead. It now sits under the bit between the seats that shall now be known as the centre floor console! It took a while but I managed to fit the drinks holder from my wife’s mercedes and then fit carpet. I’m not sure the subwoofer is in the best place, it’ll probably move under the seat (clues in the title numpty!!) and I need to make a gaitor for the handbrake but I’m going to call this done for now!!

Well this is awkward!! So, I loved this car, but I slowly fell out of love with it. Typically, I got it working great, tuned up and then decided that it had to. Someone posted on one of the Facebook groups I’m on asking if anyone wanted to swap their Mk2 for their Mk1 XR2. Well, I’ve never had a Mk1 but used to borrow mates SuperSport and the Mk2’s were all the rage when I served in Germany so we thought why not. Let someone else get some use out of the Escort. Then lockdown came along Anyway, fast forward into June and I took the plunge and drove the Escort up to Peterborough services to do a swap. It was loud, rattly and I had a constant fear that it would breakdown! No idea why, it’s only broken down on me once! And there it was. First time I’d seen it in the flesh and it was as good as the seller had told me it was. Driving back was such a different experience, light steering (not powered, just light!) quiet and just purred along at 80. I don’t miss the Escort, and now I have a car that I’m happy to run to the shops in. It needs some bits to bring it alive, but no rush and lets face it, this years not exactly been memorable for the shows and trips!!

Wow, not sure if I’ve commented before but this is exactly what I joined Retro Rides for (a long time ago!). Off the wall builds, and built to an overwhelmingly high standard!! Outstanding

☹️ It’s been a difficult year chaps, fingers crossed but sadly I’ll be away now. How do I get a refund on my camping tickets?

Had you considered a compressor fridge instead of a 3-way? Granted, they are more money, but you won't need to cut holes in the side of the van for the exhaust, and they use way way less electricity that a 3-way does. I hadn’t as it goes, but I’ve changed the plans slightly and just going for a decent cool box for the time being. More to follow this week as I get all the bits together. Van is home too, so should be able to get a fair bit done this week I hope

Inspirational stuff. This year I really must make a start on putting ours back together. Absolutely cracking job, and yes, that roof is gorgeous.
