I've had my eye out for one in the uk for last 5 years or so not seen a single one for sale or even on the road. Loads of potential and the only car I can think of that has such a perfect silhouette of a bowler hat on wheels. Watching with interest.
*Commentators curse! There's a French registered left hooker on evil bay right now - get saving people lol.

Weld a washer edge on in the middle of the dent then use a slide hammer (improvised or otherwise) to pull it out enough to get the bonnet open and get in behind it.

There is a slight difference these days though. Young people don't drive old cars because they can't afford better. It's actually cheaper for them to drive brand new ones. There are two apprentices at work both can get a brand new supermini on tick with insurance included for just £10 a month more than the cost of insurance for a 12 year old Peugeot 206 1.1 by the time maintenance and fuel efficiency are thrown in its a no brainer.

Ah thanks steveg I knew there was something amiss obviously but I was thinking that maybe the spring had been replaced with a slightly smaller one or something what you are saying makes sense.

Who knows. There are no new scratches since the car has been stuck at home all week. But I leave it on the road now as the cat only ever sits on the car on the drive. My drive seems to be a thoroughfare for the seemingly billions of cats where I live and they regularly screech and fight so maybe my car was the ring. Most of the scratches have polished out and the paint is presentable but not perfect anyway so not real harm done.
Cat lovers can breathe easy but I fear I'll never be one of your number. I'm not really a pet person but at least a dog is loyal.

Very jealous of those wheels they look superb! My sprint wheels are a bit dull. I might refurb and only paint 4 spokes and polish the other 4. Like a dude on here did with some 924 alloys on his cortina.

P.s the cat is safe I can't catch it. Whilst I agree on the whole cats don't scratch cars generally when you have a highly polished car that is wet their paws don't grip and when they slip the claws come out!

A new 45D cap and rota! ...and "We have ignition"! started on half a turn of the key. Thanks for all the help and support. Do I go electronic or not? I've heard points don't wear very quickly at all with a certain kind of coil (inductive?) and thus don't cause issues, is this true? How do I tell what I've got?

Thanks ChasR at the moment it's a bit of a hybrid I think it's a conventional cap in terms of connections but it is canted back 90 degrees like the standard screw in sprint cap. I think I'll go to the local motor factors and get whatever they've got so I can get it running enough to get it back to the garage. Then order up an electronic alternative to the points, The sprint cap and leads you suggested and maybe a red rotor arm. I might go mad and throw some iridium plugs in too.

Amazing work Looks great in bare metal and all the lines are clear and crisp. I'm convinced that isn't true of many so called pros when at the bare metal stage. Keep at it. It's one of my favourite cars on here.

Thanks for the response I'm keen to learn please excuse my stupid questions but I was under the impression I wouldn't get a spark from the coil with a plug connected directly to it if the points or condenser were fubar as I thought the points/condenser acted on the negative side of the coil causing it to cycle between charging and then collapsing and discharging causing the spark? More confused than ever!

Got Mrs Wodge and the offspring up at 5:30 last Sunday ready for the 2.5hr trek to the Italian Sunday breakfast club at good wood. Got everyone in started up and she fired caught ran for three seconds and died. She wouldn't restart and I was reluctant to crank for too long at that time in the morning. As she alighted Mrs Wodge managed to drop her watch down the drain next to the car. Doh!
After a brief but fruitless bout of fishing with an old speaker on the end of a bit of wire I spent two hours emptying 5ft of stagnant water from said drain with a child's bucket hooked on the end of a washing line prop! Eventually retrieved said definitely non magnetic watch with a small rake gaffa taped to the prop. Decided to take my reward rather than tinker with car.
Anyway back on track I finally got round to fault finding on Wednesday. There was no hint of even a stutter even when squirting petrol into the carb with an old dettol bottle so I started thinking spark. I pulled the number one plug lead off and stuck an old motocycle plug on the end then convinced the 10 yr old he was allowed to drive so he'd sit and turn it over for me. With the plug earthed on the block he cranked away but there was nada, zip zilch going on. With some trepidation I started googling the black art of points I've had a couple of cars with dizzys before but they have been mid - late 80s with contact less points. I took the cap off and e. I could see the points opening and closing and regular sparks I figured that was good enough and wimped out of messing with them. I pulled the coil lead off the dizzy cap and it totally fell apart on me! Ah ha I thought I'm an ignition god. New lead sourced and all the green gunge and curse word cleaned up from cap. Tried new lead no difference. Then it struck me that the cap connections are the same as the connection on the coil so I plugged the number 1 plug lead into the coil stuck the motocycle plug on the other end and bribed the 10 yr old for the use of his left hand. Right we have spark so with my ill informed lay mans understanding I'm thinking cap or rotor arm can be the only culprits? I reattached the coil to the cap and balanced the inner centre pin of the cap (which contacts the rota arm) on top of the spark plug which was balanced on the block and I got spark. Does this suggest Rotor arm? There is no spark at any of the plugs so I don't think it's one duff contact in the cap.
I've heard modern repro stuff is unreliable where's the best place to buy a new rotor arm and cap? Are my findings correct or am I missing something obvious?

Right tried a gear shift repair not entirely successful. As mentioned before the spring that holds the shifter in place by pressing on the cup with the gate cut in the top was able to climb out through the gate. So my plan was to add a flexible piece of plastic on top of the spring. I was bored at lunchtime so glanced round my desk and spotted this Looks perfect and has a nice premarked centre for the gearstick hole. What are we going to do when we stop using optical media!? Unfortunately I didn't have time to remove the gear knob and overdrive wire to slip the plastic guard on from the top so I slit it to get it around the gear knob. Installed It works but because I slit it to get it in the gearstick has chewed it up rather than it moving with the gearstick so I will have to redo at somepoint. Props to those who religiously keep up their build diaries this took ages to write up yet took two minutes to do. I am writing solely on iPhone though. I have also mocked up a new boot floor in card. To be transferred to hardboard and carpeted. Judging by this picture my cardboard modelling needs improvement before I start making panels!! More when I get round to it
