Saw some nice stuff which is probably meant for auction but I can’t be sure. Great to see some photos of it out in the Sun! Hopefully you can just enjoy it for a while now. I think that's a private collection - That used to be a Ford garage, but they have moved to new place over in Hapert, wouldn't be surprised if the owner is using it as a personal museum now.

Ahh, I did wonder if you would be at the Valkenswaard meeting. I was away in the Ardennes all weekend and only came back sunday afternoon otherwise would have come up in the truck. Can you not get blank rear discs, and just drill them to the PCD you need? The CSP kits always get good reviews, available from M7 in the UK.

I would agree with SAMJ here. That looks like the kind of head bolts used on the pinto 2.0. I think it is kalled 12 point bit or someting like that. Maybe hammering in the right bit will get the bolt loose. Officially it is an XZN drive - they are quite common on German cars, VAG especially seem to like them.

With the cams out, the headbolts were undone. I noticed that they weren't all as difficult to shift. I wonder how this engine was put back together... was a torquewrench even used? I think they used a heavy duty impact driver instead. Why? Well, because the last headbolt I needed to tackle was mullered. I just couldn't even get my bit in there. I couldn't hammer it in even. It's just totally fubared. I tried some other shaped tools to see if that would work, but there was just not enough left to grab on to and hold. I wonder what is the best option here. Drill the head off? Which might prove difficult as I may not have a drill large enough. Or do I weld on a bolt. I only have an arc welder and not much if any experience. That looks like a triple square / 12-point bolt, not an Allan head, have you tried one?

Ah feck Alex, hope the wife heals soon. My OH broke her foot playing rugby 2 years ago, its amazing the difference it makes when all the small things are on one person.

Yet another delivery from the US, this time from a slightly more interesting company... Because Race car - Because they were the cheapest supplier, with the item in stock, and who would actually tell me waht the shipping would cost before I had paid for the order. One company wanted me to order, pay, and then only once they had picked and packed would they tell me what the costs were, wouldn't even respond to emails.

Brake drum out of true ? might explain why it's more pronouced when hot ... The noise isn't in time with the wheel rotation, rather multiple random times per wheel rotation. I would expect an out of true drum to be more cyclic?

I largely watch history related stuff which isn’t really relevant, but I also watch some amateur engineering type things. I tend to favour people I might actually learn something from, in a ‘background knowledge that has practical applications’ type of way, so- BOLTR/AvE bigclivedotcom (also has an excellent sideline in carbonating drinks that should not be carbonated) Lockpickinglawyer And I can proably even shoehorn in Tom Scott. If we are going down that route... doubleboost - Northern english guy, mechanic by trade, making stuff in his home workshop and sometimes playing with steam engines Steve Summers - high precision in everything he does, even rebuilding his workshop as it was falling down into a stream. Laura Kampf - German maker and artist SV Seeker - Building a huge Junk rigged sailing ship in his back yard. hand Tool Rescue - Repairing / restoring old tools, with great production. Xyla Foxlin - Mechantonic engineer working in a small workshop, everything from building rockets, wooden canoes, and she even made a wooden corset. This Old Tony - just because he is probably one of the best non-serious machining channels out there bcbloc02 - Heavy machining, and some automotive content in the form of diesel tractor pulling engine building. Abomb69 - Gone a bit off recently for me, but some of his machining videos are really good. I feel like I have gained a lot of knowledge from him considering I have never run a mill or lathe... I’ve got to say I struggle to tolerate AvE. I don’t know what his background is and he obviously knows a bit about engineering, but I find his complete lack of regard (or understanding?) for the limitations of volume production completely unbearable. Stuff costs what it costs and it’s built to a price. That’s how it is. He needs to get over that. But couple it with his regular racist and feminist digs disguised by “I work with everybody and hate all of them” and I got a bit fed up with it after a while. I am the same, can't stand AvE, just can't see the appeal. The overly affected language gets to me.

Not a lot of photos, but after getting some jobs finished in the garden (Last of the paving done for now, just need to do some tidying up, level the ground, and lay the lawn...) I managed to get a few hours of truck time... When I opened up the new rear bumper that was in the box above I realised it was going to need some painting before it could go on. The chrome was good but where they had welded the support framework into it there was some unpainted sections and I didn't trust how good the black paint is. Everything that isn't visible got cleaned down, and a decent coat of gloss black brushed on on Saturday afternoon, which meant that sunday afternoon I could get it fitted. In my mind this should be a 1 hour job, I had bought a new fitting kit, so 4 bolts to remove the old bumper, 4 bolts to mount the brackets to the chassis, and 4 bolts to mount the bumper to the brackets. Easy. Except that the brackets were a completely different design to the ones I had on the old bumper, with many many holes and notches obviously designed for multiple different vehicles, and no instructions. After trying many different combinations of bolt holes and getting Rae to help me lift it on and off I gave up, found a youtube video to check it out, and was fitted a few minutes later... I really ought to get a decent plate frame and some replacement plates made up for it, the current one looks like its been run over multiple times, I have no idea how they get into such a state. Looking at the old bumper I think someone with a bit of effort could probably pull it back straight again, it actually sprang back a bit once I removed it form the mounts. Considering the mounts are made of 5/16" / 8mm plate, the drivers side (bottom) certainly moved some. I will probably chuck the old one on some of the Dutch american car / truck groups as a "free to anyone brave enough" before it gets added to the scrap pile.

You are going to need a big tank... A 10 litre CO2 welding gas bottle regulated down to 2bar will give you 1000 litres of gas, and with most guns using over 200 litre per minute you will go through the bottle in a few minutes easily. If you need more than a bottle or two you would be better off hiring a proper air compressor for a weekend.

It probably only had OBD1 not OBD2, so you have to find the correct scanner to work with the car... or at least that has the correct leads to work with the car. OBD1 has two small connectors, I think in a MK3 they are behind a blanking plate on the dash, underneath the heater controls. Depending on exact age it might be OBD1 or an early OBD2 car. www.outilsobdfacile.com/location-plug-connector-obd/Volkswagen-golf-3-non-standardYou can also try the blink codes that are read out from the engine management light, or you can make LEDs that you put across the OBD port pins and flash in sequence with the error codes... google VW Blink Codes and you should find all you need. As for the actual issue, are you getting fuel pump priming correctly? Does the pump run and turn off when you turn the ignition from off to run, but not all the way to start?

I won't say don't modify the plate, but just know that if you get pulled for it then change it back to stock. Get caught twice and you can have the plate taken confiscated, a £1k fine, and points on your license. Push the rules fine, but do it knowing what the risk is at least.

Don't know what it is like in the UK, but here a lot of the metal places wont take wheels with tyres, so you will have to demount them. They might take the diff, so long as it has been cleaned out and not full of oil.
You are lucky to get €0.25 / kg for mixed scrap at the moment, and most places wont give you anything if it is less than €50, so unless you are weighing in 200+ kg you won't be getting paid.
